    Re: It's Fitted :)

On the insurance front... I am through Porsche insuance (Norwich Union). The do not rate the risk as being increased because it's already a powerful car and an extra 25 brake doens't make that much difference. Their words not mine. However the estimated replacement value of the vehicle has risen from Pounds80K to Pounds85K so they charged me an extra Pounds94 because the car in under a year old.

    Re: It's Fitted :)

Yes, I just heard from another source that their X51 insurance hike was an extra Pounds100 a year for any performance gains up to 10%. As the powerkit is 7% more on 355bhp to 381bhp it is not considered a large raise.

My chipped Audi S3 which is 11% more power cost me an extra Pounds400 a year over the standard model! Seems I just missed that 10% cutoff

    Re: It's Fitted :)

Guys - those that have had it retrofitted, how many hours labour was it? I have heard 25, can someone please confirm this?

Also, I have now been told that ALL C2S models can have the powerkit retrofitted and not just models made after Aug 2005.

So looks like I have a difficult decision to make. Add the X51 or save the money for a Turbo with PDK in a few years time. Hmmmmm....

On talking to some OPCs that have done the retrofit, the results are supposed to be amazing. Apparently it makes the car perform as it were a GT3!

    Re: It's Fitted :)

How much to retrofit if PSE is already fitted? In UK? In Holland? One could combine it with a nice trip to Amsterdam...

    Re: It's Fitted :)

Flash indicates above it's Pounds10k. I have heard it may be a lot less at other UK OPCs but that is yet to be confirmed. I am busy running round getting quotes.

OPC Reading is still to confirm if officially it is possible for earlier cars than Aug 05. I have been told by another OPC that they have done it for older cars and anything with an engine model of M97-01 and later should be ok. OPC Reading says it wont do the work though without Porsche GB approval first though.

You will lose more in trade-in depreciation by 2008 surely than it would cost to retrofit X51 now?!

    Re: X51

Anyone with C2S X51 test driven a new Turbo?

If so can anyone give a comparison?

There is a big jump from standard C2S to Turbo from my own experiences but I wondered how much X51 closes the gap.

    Re: X51

    Damn, damn and errr damn!

Seems although it is unofficially fine to retrofit the Powerkit to a pre-Aug05 build car, they cannot give it an official sign-off so adding it would invalidate my warrantee. This is straight from Germany. This is not something I would ever want to mess with so there is no way I can do it.

Suppose I better get saving for a Turbo after all....

BTW: for those interested, best quote was from OPC West Sussex around Pounds8.3k incl VAT (assuming you already have PSE fitted). Which was a fantastic deal! Such a shame

    Re: X51

imo GT3 is a better package than x51'd m97 engine for the C2s and the TT is a better package than the x51'd m97 engine for the C4S.

The GT1 block is just so much better if you're into performance, but I guess sometimes resale isn't an option...

    Re: X51

Here's the Nm and bhp graph comparing the X51 with the normal Carrera S...

As you can see, you will only really notice a torque difference between 1500-2500rpm and above 5000rpm. Re bhp, the difference is increasingly felt above 5000rpm.

    Re: X51

If it's only another Pounds8300, it might be worth doing in the future to give the car a new lease of life...

It costs much more to do it later (lots of labor)...

    Re: X51

True, but Alex UK got a quotation to retrofit it (with PSE already installed) for Pounds8300 from OPC West Sussex. Pls see his post above...

I think the 997S X51 should really have been the standard 997S spec...but that's another debate altogether...

Yes but then it would invalidate the yearly 'extended warrantee' I plan on getting from next June.

Actually, I have heard of some OPCs doing it almost the same price as if from new (including PSE, labour and VAT). Seems OPCs that have done it a few times before can do a lot more on their prices. So it's worth phoning around.

I'm really upset that Porsche politics have stopped me from doing it

    Sorry, my mistake...

    Re: X51

OK have now racket up over 1000 miles since the retrofit. Had to journey from Aberdeen to Northampton and back in 2 days...

Anyhow the effect beyond 5000rpm is less noticable than the 1000-5000 rpm effect. The car pulls strongly and cleanly all the way to the redline. The slightly annoying flat spot is gone, and peak power appears to hit around 7000rpm. And of course the rev limit is slightly higher too. And it makes the PSE sound even better, a touch rawer, and a little louder, or at least it does on the inside...

But the biggest revelation is in how the car pulls through the midrange. Also I accidentally pulled away from a junction in 4th instead of second, and the car still pulled cleanly from low revs without stalling. Try that without the X51 LOL! It also pulls much uphill uch more strongly. On twisty roads having the extra oomph from low down enables you to focus on building up a nice rythmn without having to sorry about keeping the engine on the boil. So for the less talented of us this can make for a really good buzz

My verdict is that is you have a C4S and want to stay 4WD NA, then this kit is a must. If you have a C2S, then it might be worth consider a GT3 instead. ALthough having said that, the X51 provides a torque advantage over a GT3 even, and that may appeal to some people.

Great summation! Could not have said it better.
    Cheers

    Re: X51

This has developed into a truly excellent and informative thread!

    Re: X51

Ok after much deliberating and reading the various threads with regards to the powerkit (great info and thanks to all of you for that) I have decided to go for it. With the Powerkit the OPC is also strongly recommending a retro fit of the short shifter which he is willing to do at cost....what do you guys think? Is the short shifter worth it bearing in mind that I mainly use the car for around town driving.....your thoughts on the matter will would be well appreciated.....

    Re: X51

I have the short shifter and drive around town all the time - its a bit notchy in the morning and often I have to double clutch in first but otherwise its very, very sweet once the car is all warmed up - a noticeable difference.

What have you been quoted and by which OPC?

    Re: X51

I already have a factory fit PSE so for the powerkit I have been quoted Pounds8360 and Pounds8550 with the short shifter all in (VAT & labour). OPC West Sussex seems the most keen on doing these. They claim to have done 5 retro fits which is important as a few others I had called were more expensive and had not done any! They have also given me the details of people they have done it for (with their permission ofcourse) so I could give them a call and have their thoughts on the changes the powerkit made.

    Re: X51

Great stuff! I am still undecided whether I should go for the X51-Kit. I would appreciate, if you could give us more insight after the retro fitting has been done.

    Re: X51

There are a few reports of the X51 and it's retrofit on the Porsche Club GB forum under:

    http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=237188

I believe you should be able to view the thread with a 'guest' login status.

I referenced Rennteam a few times in the thread so I suppose it's only fair that I do the same for the PCGB site.

There are at least 2 people here that have had the retrofit done at OPC West Sussex. I personally talked to the OPC and they seem very keen and gave a very good quote (compared to the cost of X51 as a factory fitted option). Note though that I already had PSE (and Short Shifter) which brought the price down a lot from other quotes.

I would have gone ahead with the retrofit if I could, but it turned out Porsche would have invalidated my warrantee if I had - given my car was built before 08/2005. Shame.

I agree with you 100% and I own a 2005 997S. Also, I think they look better. IMHO

    Re: X51

That's 2 1/2 months since the Powerkit was retro fitted byt OPC Aberdeen. In that time I've done 3000+ miles. Prior to the kit being fitted I had done approx 7000 miles over the course of 5 months with the car in standard C4S spec. My car does not have the 'sport mode' option with enahnced throttle response though.

With more miles the difference in performance above 5000 rpm has become much more evident, however some of this may be attributed to the engine loosening off - whose to say?. As previously stated, the extra bottom end torque was very welcome, it is now very hard to stall the car when pulling away at low revs, and no need to slip the clutch. IMO the standard car is really lacking in low down torque. The midrange is phenominal. Very very strong, and continually builds urge. At 5000 rpm thimgs go into warp speed. The is more chance of bouncing off the limiter though because the car build urge all the way to... well the limiter LOL. It's a shame the limiter is a hard cut!

For some fun, try holding the car at 5000rpm in 3rd gear (or 4th gear is you are very brave), then suddenly plant the throttle all the way. Bury it! The response is electric, and the car instantly surges forward like you just hit boost in a turbo car. This is the quintessential X51 moment Would like to see a standard C2S or C4S vs their X51 equivalents in a 5000rpm 3rd gear roll on. I would expect the powerkitted cars to walk away from the standard cars.

If you are ordering a new S model, then make sure you tick the X51 box. As for a retro-fit... well to me it's worth every penny of the Pounds10K that I paid. I've spent a lot more on mods (for other cars) that promised more and delivered much much less. Nobody is going to be dissapointed. If someone blind tested them (well not literally blind heh heh) then they would easily be able to discern the X51 car. Likewise passengers with less experience of the car will often comment "Wow this thing is much faster and louder than I remembered". I kept the details of the kit secret from my wife (especially the price) and she noticed straight away. I attributed the improvement to a recall on the air filter

Hope this insight proves useful to someone.

    Nice report Flash, thanks

    Re: X51

Ok in my moment of insanity I have ordered the Powerkit with short shifter.....OPC West Sussex will be doing the install. What the hell...its only money!

From what I have heard you won't be disappointed
