The air inlet in front of the rear wheel gives it away as an LP640. By the way, the inlet has a different shape in the left side.
Shame about the car. I hope the two wounded (the article did not mention if they were in the Lambo or another car) will recover quickly.

I can confirm it is an LP640. It was sitting in the showroom at Lamborghini Birmingham the day I collected my Gallardo. It was a stunning car and it is a great shame to see it end up like that. I'm not aware of the whole story but someone posted on another forum that 2 of the people travelling in another car work for him. They were hospitalised as a result of the crash and apparently say it was the Lambo driver who caused it

The side inlet is the same as that of the LP640, transparent engine bay cover option and if you look at the interior of the door on the far side, it has the q-citura interior option; all these are exclusive on the LP640 - also not to mention the side mirrors too
If you look closely at the front caliper you will notice how large it is in comparison with the rim of the wheel. This also indicates that it has the Carbon Ceramic Brake option(also exclusive to LP640 
) So it's definately an LP640

Especially interesting with this current crash is that the driver was nobody less than the number 1 Lamborghini testdriver Valentino Balboni. Now if this guy isnt able to drive such a car, then who is? A material defect would only be the most feasible solution for these 3 accidents, otherwise the car really is impossible to drive"

As I have written elsewhere, these cars are reaching a point where they are too much to handle ESPECIALLY on public streets. With all that power, owners need to find out what they paid for and in the process end up taking unreasonble risks. The temptation is just too great.

My hearts just bleeds seeing such a beautiful car in such tatters. It's just a painful sight.
I hope all those involved escaped unscathed or at least make a speedy recovery. The crash looks pretty horrific.
I agree with nberry here. Power levels are going unerringly upwards yet driver skill levels remain much the same. The results are predictable.
I think it should be an EU-wide law that any car with more than 300 bhp should come with a 1 day compulsory driver training course included in the price as standard. A half day PDE is already included in UK sales of new Porsches.
(I know from the previous posts that this crash involved a Lamborghini test driver so such a course wouldn't have helped here but, nonetheless, for the general buyers out there, such courses should be compulsory).
I would even provide an incentive. If a person undergoes such a course, they should qualify automatically for a 5% discount on their car insurance for each of the next 5 years. That will get people signing up for such courses in double quick time if there's money to be saved. So what if this is a 'bribe'? The outcome is a general raising of driving standards. Surely that's a good thing.
