    997 analogue instrument dials

    With the 997, we get:

    1) oil temperature gauge
    2) analogue speedometer
    3) rev counter
    4) coolant temperature and fuel gauges
    5) oil pressure gauge

Why is there no battery charge level gauge? Do rennteamers feel it would be useful to have one?

Are there any other gauges that you think we should have got as well as the current ones?

(I seem to recall that some of the older Porsches did get one of these gauges)

    Re: 997 analogue instrument dials

Personally I don't feel that there are any additional guages required. I just wish they would rearrange them so that oil pressure and oil temp are not hidden by your hands. But maybe the germans are more confident in their engines than the italians.

    Re: 997 analogue instrument dials

here's a comp. The charge guage is taken over by warning lights.

My "regret" is that our analog speedometer is basically useless. Kinda seems like a big dumb mistake. They shouldda figured how to incorporate it without compromising it's usefulness; "form follows function," yeah right.

Ahemmm..., what's that wasted space doing on the lower left (5 to 11 o'colck) on the water temp/fuel guage? Maybe put oil pressure guage there and have room to add a full-circle speedometer. Would look off balanced maybe; but so does the PCM screen and center console buttonage.

IMHO, the avionics/racecar "look" of the 911 guages was part of the mystique of the Porsche. I was slightly disappointed when they discontinued that "classic" look with the 996. New guage layout looks like a "normal" nothing special car.

I think the analogue speedometer needs to stay because in some countries where the 911 is sold, it is a legal requirement that all cars must have an analogue speedometer (e.g. the UK). Seems crazy if there is already a digital readout. I guess the rationale must be that the digital gauge can be switched between mph and kph so it isn't permanently in mph mode. This bothers the UK transport authorities intensely!

As for the space to the bottom left of the coolant temperature and fuel tank gauges, this IS used but only in the Tiptronic S cars! It has a grid pattern showing which gear the car is in.

What bothers me is that, even if you don't have cruise control, you still have a greyed out light for this in the analogue speedometer gauge.

Also, the warning lights differ from country to country. In the US, you have the word "BRAKE" written in red lights whereas Europe and Canada have a handbrake symbol (a circle in round brackets with an exclamation mark in the middle).

Coming back to the battery charge level, I would find this useful. It is always nice to know if your battery is low, dying etc. Helps with long term storage too.

As for other dials, I suppose the new Ford GT has more dials than other cars (to my knowledge). It would be interesting to see what that car has got that we haven't.

    Re: 997 analogue instrument dials

Here are 3 photos I found of the dials on the Ford GT. Doesn't look to me like we have anything missing.

    Interesting post, thanks.

About battery. Would be GREAT to have the guage! Mine is always a question. Porsche service says my car is fine but I have this feeling the battery is continually discharging beyond what it is supposed to. I keep a battery maintainer connected at all times when the car is parked.

The warning on the PCM "battery operation permitted only a short time" (something like that) when the car is parked and the PCM is on bothers me because I have no freeking idea what a "short time" is, so therefore I sit in silence when the car is parked; basically in fear I'll be unable to start car if I use the PCM at all!

Thanks for the great comp photos easy-rider911.

I'm impressed with the "offset" look of the dash. IOW, there's no compulsion to center everything like it's a perfect world.

For the Ford GT, it looks more like a "race car heritage" is being emphasized.

Makes you wonder "what was Porsche thinking" when they dumped that original 911 look and went "conventional" with the balanced, centered, non-special-looking guage cluster!!??

    Awghhh!

    Re: 997 analogue instrument dials

I think the analog speedo is a waste of space (not withstanding the UK regs - maybe an even smaller one would satisfy them). I never ever use it. A battery indicator would be fine.

A torque guage would be nice. I've never seen one, but we're all forced to translate rpm into torque anyway, so why not do the match for us?

Funny because that's the last thing I think of when driving like a madman. I mean I glance at speedometer just for a microsecond to see how bad my ticket and jail time will be when I'm passing on a curvey two-lane rural highway. Torque is the least of my concerns. But that's just me. A Tq guage would be nice for some folks I guess.
