    Winter Storage - Battery Maintainer Placement

    For those of you who have used the Porsche manufactured battery maintainer that plugs into the lighter socket:

    The wire from the charger to the lighter plug is a smaller diameter that the wire from the charger to the power source. Because of this, it appears that it would be better to leave the charger outside the car and run the smaller diameter wiring into car via bottom edge of door.

    What's your advice?

    By the way, one post on this subject noted a notch/indentation in the rubber weather strip along the door bottom to accommodate the charger's wire, but I see no such thing on my '05 997 driver's door. Any comments?

    I leave the charger outside, but it's no biggie either way...

    Since I cover the car when charging, I pass an extension cord through the passenger window which I lower an inch. No chance of pinching the wires in the door closure.

    I plug it into the passenger's footwell, close the door. No biggie.

    Leave charger outside of car. Though a remote possibility, it is less of a fire hazard that way.

    IMO, (I could be wrong) those cutouts on weather strip seem to be for drainage. Also it doesn't make sense to run the wire in the SAME PLACE everytime at the weakest part of the weatherstrip; "weakest" because of the cutout.

    Just open and close door a few times and the wire will move and the stress on the weather strip will be evened out.

    I would be pleased if someone could refer to where Porsche recommends to run the wire. IOW, I'm just telling you what I do; I could be wrong... .

    Leave the charger outside the car - agreed, less of a fire hazard. Also, I think I read somewhere that it's better for ventilation purposes as there might be a vapor factor involved. I plug mine to the passanger floor plug and run the wire outside the car from the passanger window cracked an inch.

    I fixed mine to the garage wall (charge-o-mat has holes for this) and ran the cable from the charger through a cracked open window to the cigarette lighter socket. Plenty of cable length for this. The unit gets warm when boost charging, but cools right down when trickle charging.

    Thanks for all the feedback.
    Like the idea of running wire though cracked passenger window under dust cover, with connection to passenger floor plug.
