    Is auxiliary battery necessary?

I am about to order a new Cayenne S; and have read of dead battery problems. Is the extra battery option a "must have"?

    Re: Is auxiliary battery necessary?

It may partly depend on where you live. In warmer climates, like where I live, a second battery is not such a great thing. I would much prefer to have the spare tire and the Bose subwoofer; you can have two, but not all three, of these options.

If you live in colder climates where the battery can be more stressed, the spare battery make take on greater importance. The auxillary battery does have the nice feature of being dedicated to the starter only, so that other devices can't drain it.

My tt does not have the auxiliary battery or the spare. But, the subwoofer housing looks too large to permit a spare.

Are there two different subwoofer housings, a large one, without the spare and a smaller one, for with the spare?

After I had serious battery problems with our ML55 AMG, especially due to the auxilliary heating system, I went for the extra battery on the Cayenne to be sure I don't have this trouble again. Now I also don't have to worry about a possible power drain from the DVD entertainment system (aftermarket install) or other power drain sources, especially during winter time. I can also use the cooling function of the auxilliary heating system during hot summer months without having to worry that I get stuck somewhere with my family.
If you need a spare, forget about the extra battery but I live in the city and I usually don't travel in deserted areas.

Yes, there are two housings, one shaped like a doughnut that will accomodate the auxillary battery and one like a doughnut hole that fits inside the spare. I think they both have the same internal volume, just a different shape.

It depends on what your subwoofer looks like. If it looks like the one below, no problem. The space saver spare will fit over the top.

If you have the large diameter subwoofer that has a round cavity on it's underside, then you may also have the auxiliary battery underneath. If you have the large diameter subwoofer but no extra battery, it is possible to live without the subwoofer. Just unplug and remove the subwoofer and put in the spacesaver spare. You might try it and see what you think. There are some Cayenne owners in Austin that have done that.

It may also be possible to order the subwoofer you see in the photo, I don't know.

The image of the smaller subwoofer in the other post, looks like it would permit a spare tire to fit over the subwoofer. My subwoofer fills the entire wheel well. Is there a cavity within my subwoofer for the second battery option?

    Re: Is auxiliary battery necessary?

Your Cayenne has an auxillary battery. If it didn't, it would have the other subwoofer enclosure.

    Re: Is auxiliary battery necessary?

I would like to add another point to the auxilliary battery necessity question: maybe some of you don't know it but if you have the auxilliary battery on your Cayenne and you drain your first (main) battery COMPLETELY (so that even the starter relay doesn't work anymore), the auxilliary battery is...USELESS. I just found out today when I studied some technical material from Porsche about the Cayenne.
Only if the main (first) battery still has enough power to keep the starter relay running, the auxilliary battery helps starting the car. I know that completely draining the first battery is pretty difficult but it can happen. And if it happens, the second battery is just a nice piece of weight in the trunk.
