How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

Believe me I do not want to rehash what has already been discussed about ad-nauseum with regards to which radar/laser detector is better, etc. What I do want to, hopefully, start is the definitve thread on HOW to hardwire a Valentine 1 rader detector along with pictures of those installations.

I am eager to see examples of:
    detector placements
    wire running and concealing
where and how you tapped into power (taps or fuse box)
placement of the remote "concealed display" unit
wiring of the remote "concealed display"
    etc.

    Thanks!

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I don't have pictures right now...headed off to work but..I have my V1 mounted high, right below the tint to the right of my rear view mirror. I have the wire going up over the tint...it's easy to hide the wire on top of the windshield, there is a space for it. Once you get to the door area, you have to remove the rubber and continue threading the wire down until you get to the passenger's footwell.

I took the wire, strung it across and behind the center console (it's empty space back there) to the fuse box. The fuses kinda pop out so to speak, allowing you to go behind it, and then connecting the fuse.

If it sounds a little daunting at first, I apologize but this really only takes about 20-25 min. I have to check where in the fuse array I have the V1 connected. I forgot the #. I have it set so that it turns on when the key is inserted. Shuts off when I take the key out. No visible wires whatsoever in the cabin.

Or to make things simple: you can get the V1 integrated into the rear view mirror...it'll cost more than PSE but eh....

Wow! How much does your passenger weigh?

911digital, thank you for posting links and a picture. That is the desired result I was looking for, ie., people posting pictures and discussions about their own installations.

I am not solely looking for the exotic installations (like removing the tach and dis-assembling the remote unit) but also the more standard ones. I hope other people feel the desire to contribute.

    Thanks!

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I have the escort and hard wired it directly to the fuse box. The unit resides to the left of the rear view mirror. 20 min job.

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I paid $200.00 for my dealer to install it next to my rear view mirror. There are no wires visible and they ran it along the top of the windshield to the right, down to the passenger foot well, then hardwired it to the passenger 12 volt socket. I am not sure how they got from the right side of the foot well to the left, but I will post pics later on.

There is a space right below the glove compartment where you can tape the wire...electric tape is fine. I kept going all the way to the fuse box...

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I did the same... I have it on the left side of the rear view mirror, ran the wire along the top right side of the windshield (it tucks in rather nicely into the roof lining), down the right front pillar (again, you can insert it under the cover), then under the glove box (like JuanCarlos said), and plugged it into the passenger footwell socket. It took me just about 20 minutes and did not cost a penny. If I can do it, trust me, you can too!

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

    The ultimate V1 installation..

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

Yeah I posted that almost a year ago on here...would have posted again but I don't know where that damn picture is although www.aidesign.com should have it.

AI Design here in NY charges just over $2K for that installation...most common combo package with that V1 in the mirror is a Blinder laser jammer installation front and rear...

I'd that 2K and put it towards an exhaust

What fuse number are you using so that it doesn't stay on all the time?

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

There is a nice V1 hardwire via mirror electronics thread from Rennlist's 1080iAddict:
    http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=228360&highlight=DIY+hardwire

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I had the V1 hardwired to my car at the dealer. The cost was $40 (they did not charge me for the labor, but I gave the installer a tip.) These pictures show the unit installed to the left of the rear view mirror. You can see that the only visible wire is the power cord (behind the mirror). The installer told me that he also used the passenger socket.

For those of you that have your V1 mounted near your rear view mirror, does the sun visor still fold down properly?

I do appreciate all of the comments thus far. I just need to make sure that Santa brings me the remote conceal kit for the V1.

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

Since we're talking about radars - how easy is it to detect a radar jamming / rador detection device? In our province they are illegal, you risk getting 10 points off your license, and a $3500 fine. So really it's better to eat a couple of speed tickets instead of that. I was wondering even though just out of curiousity - how can they detect you having one? except to see a rapid breaking a couple of times without any (visible) cause ?

    Sparrow,

I go to Montreal quite often and am aware of Quebec's ban on radar detectors. I am not sure if Quebec authorities have started using Spectre III (the super radar detector detector) like they have in Virginia/D.C., but I'm assuming they have. I believe with test results from radarbusters.com, a website dedicated to such devices, the V1 was detected at the least possible distance (something around a 120 feet) as compared to other competitors such as the Escort 8500 X50 (over a 1,000 feet).

When in Quebec, I rely on me spotting cops, and turning off the V1 just in time. Every time I have gone up there with friends of mine, cops have never been a problem, especially for any type of speeding. Getting pulled over downtown for other violations is a different story, but they've always let us off the hook at the sign of a U.S. Passport

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

SWS - I'll try and check on the fuse # for you tonight. Was busy this weekend...

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I believe the passenger's footwell socket is not switched i.e. if you don't turn the V1 off it'll stay on even if the key is removed. For those who plugged it into that socket, is that your experience? I'm looking for a quick install where I don't have to always remember to turn the unit on and off.

That's not my experience. The unit goes off once you turn the key to the off position (no need to manually shut down the V1).

Look out for my post later. I have to get the # fuse from the fuse box. Mine turns on and off once the key is inserted/removed.

I have mine mounted a bit higher up and further to the right than the one mounted in the picture shown above. To answer your question, I am able to lower the sun visor, but it does hide the V1 at that point. IMO, that should not be a big issue as you can still hear the beeps.

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I have mine next to the mirror but on the passenger's side. That way I can lower my sun visor and most of the time I am driving alone. On different note where I live it was hard to tell if my valentine was working due to all the false alarms in the city. The other day I went on a trip where patrols are normaly out doing speed traps and it was 100% on the money. This detector gets

I just tested mine with the passenger cigarrette lighter and it definitely does NOT turn off when key is removed.

To my knowledge, the cigarette lighters in the car are always on. I have an iPod FM transmitter plugged into the center one and it's always "charged"

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

I wired into the fuse box. Very easy.

My 2006 997 behaves the same as sws1's. That is, with the ignition off and the key removed my V1, plugged into the passenger footwell outlet, stays powered on unless I use the knob to turn it off.

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

That's what makes the hard wire install so great, you never have to worry about wires in your way or powering it off. It's just there to do it's job.

Re: How about the definitive Valentine 1 hardwiring thread?

Okay, looked at the fuse box yesterday. If you look at the second row of vertical fuses, my V1 is tapped into #9 (second from the right). Doing this will activate your V1 (assuming you leave the unit itself on) when the key is inserted, and it will shut off when the key is removed.
