    Re: Cayman GT4

So, I heard from my friend that Randy Pobst ran a 1:59 in the GT350 with race slicks (not street legal).  My best time that day was 2:02 on stock tires.  So, makes me think that with equal tires and driver the GT4 should be the faster car...

GT350R is probably a better fight (the owner of that car is in the process of trading for that)...

Who has gt4 rs deposits in? Grant? I'm wondering if I should put one down based on the recent comments. One dealer didn't take a deposit but said I'm number 9 for a gt4 rs, this was last summer. I thought to myself that's a lot of people for a car that may not happen. I have since placed a 991.2 gt3 deposit at another dealer. You're probably right Grant about a potential gt4 rs being pdk only. I really would like a manual so I'd be out.

Yeah, I don't have an RS deposit due to the PDK thing (but just a guess on my part).  I do have a 981.2 GT4 and 991.2 GT3 deposit though, just in case...

That's just amazing especially at the price point. But I don't get it. What is it that makes it so much faster than the road car? It's got the same engine and suspension hardware right?

I would guess mostly tires and to lesser extent PDK, lower weight and more aggressive suspension setup.

No, it has a normal PDK which has been optimized for track. PDK-S was apparently not up to the job Smiley

I think the shorter BTG lap is about 20 sec shorter, so overall 18 sec faster than street car.

With equal tires and alignment, much less difference (<10 sec?).  Biggest difference is suspension which is stiffer, has non-PASM race shocks, and allows proper race alignment and lower chassis weight.  PDK is helpful, but not nearly as much as the former items.  PDK 6spd gear ratios aren't much different than manual 6spd.

Well the CS has the front suspension from the Cup car, but the rear is basically all GT4. Slicks makes a big difference though as the suspension is tuned for running slicks. It also has a little bit more downforce.

The engine 'might' put out a few extra HP due to less restrictive catalytic converter.

    Re: Cayman GT4

My GT4 has 991 Cup control arms and aftermarket toe links - replaces a couple rubber pieces with monoballs, but main advantage is range of camber and caster alignment (stock pieces don't even allow stock alignment values on most cars cheeky).

Yes, but impossible to use them without suspension changes (and warranty forfeiture).

Agreed.  No mention of the gap gears 1-2.  I bet it would sub 4 sec 0-60 without the gap, which would embarass the 991, hence the gap.  Hence a total bummer for canyon slamming.

There's a gap between 1st and 2nd because there's enough torque to get by there (a gap between any of the higher gears would make for very poor high speed performance).  There have to be gaps somewhere when you have 6 gears to get to 183 mph.  The only way to make the gears closer is to add more gears or to lower max speed.

    Re: Cayman GT4

I never heard all this talk about long gears or a 1-2 gap before the GT4 came out. Did the 98x not always "suffer" from this? Or did we run out of things to complain about and invented the gearing indecision

    Re: Cayman GT4

Yes, 981 always had the issue and some mags like EVO did complain about the gearing.  981S / GTS PDK is only slightly shorter.

I agree that the magnitude of complaining about it on the GT4 is much higher.  Chalk it up to standards for GT cars being much higher.  GT dept was forced to cut corners if a few areas for cost and/or protecting 911.

    Re: Cayman GT4

Aston-Martin is making 100 V12 Vantage S models for USA with a 7 speed manual with dogleg 1st gear.  I love this idea.

    Re: Cayman GT4

^ Interesting that the "AMSHIFT" system, equivalent to Sport on the GT4 that does auto-blipping on downshifting, also does no lift shifts in the Aston system.  That must feel incredibly weird.
