Hello, new here.. Need some help!

Hey everyone.. I just found this board..

I am searching for a 2006 997 6 speed manual transmission. We are rebuilding ours at this time and we can not find parts at all... there are no part numbers...

If anyone knows these transmission internally, on the forks there are plastic spacers.. We had one fall out..

We have been searching everywhere with no luck.. If anyone has information in where i can find a tranny, or even get parts, would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    BRG88

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

so no one knows anything? does anyone have any local dealers that i could get a number for??

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

we must have the only 997 gear box thats failed because it is impossible to get parts to repair.. the car is a year old, you would think there are parts you can get.

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

The car is under a year old - why not take it back to the dealer - isnt it still under warranty? Why are you doing the job yourself??

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

there is no warranty on the gear box.... we are doing it ourselves because we rebuild porsche motors, gearboxes, cars, .. we do gear boxes all the times.. but we also never have a problem with finding parts... our gearbox thats 10 grand new, is not working because of a 30 cent piece of plastic...

we are currently fabricating parts now, changing it from plastic spacers to brass spacers.. i just find it wild that you can't buy parts for this gear box...

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

Sounds as if you purchased the gearbox outright, not as part of a 911.

Here's my suspicion. When it comes to high-end high-expense components these days, engines, transmissions, the factories typically do NOT supply parts for repair. If you have any problem, even the slightest, they demand the unit be returned to them (for a full tear-down and examination and diagnosis so they can determine "what went wrong"), and they exchange it for a new unit. That, of course, only works when you've got a warranty in-hand. But if you purchased the tranny from a wrecked car, or as a unit however you got it, without a warranty, you may be highly screwed.

As tolerances and complexities have increased, factories are basically treating engines and transmissions as "sealed units" that they don't want any outside person cracking into, for fear of them causing more harm than good in the act of effecting a repair.

In your situation here, it's a silly-easy repair, but the lack of service parts makes it a PITA.

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

Postscript, when my dad took delivery of his Ford GT, it had a problem with popping out of 1st gear. We checked the shift cable adjustments, and that was not the culprit... So what did Ford do?? Shipped an entire new transaxle, stamped with our VIN#, and exchanged it for the old.. The cool thing is that we insisted on performing the exchange in our own shop, so that we had control of the care of the car and the care/correctness of the install (alot of torque specs and torque procedures to follow, and alot of risk getting the old out and the new shoe-horned in in extremely tight confines without damaging the car). Ford obliged, and donated us a local tech to work with us, who turned out to be a pretty good crack mechanic, although we didn't really need him, it was surprising how helpful he was...

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

oh no.. this is the stock gear box.. there was no purchasing one from a wreckers or what not cause there are non. thats what we have been looking for was a used one from a wreck.. no luck.. reason there is no warranty is because there is no warranty on the actualy gear box anymore.. view these pics.. http://mjvong.shutterfly.com/action/?a=0AZOWrJq0ZMWLnQ

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

I don't know what your warranty says , but my 997 S warranty covers ALL PARTS installed by the factory ( except tires ) for 4 years or 50,000 miles.
To me, ALL PARTS means EVERYTHING ( and I assume the gear box was installed by the factory )

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

no.. you have to look at the pics.. factory will not cover the gear box if the car is a race car... plus the car is over the miles it covered anyways... the only thing warranty will cover for us is if the engine blows.... we are a porsche race team.. we race all makes and models... and we repair all makes and models.. this is the first time we have encountered not being able to find parts... trust me, i have already talked to the dealer about warranty.. its is simply NOT covered.

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

Race car, i.e. totally different situation. Anyhow, since the street cars are only being dealt with in an "exchange and replace" manner, the racers are likely out in the cold with regard to service part availability. Maybe if you bought an entire tranny, you could "part it out" as-needed to other race teams and wind up turning a profit! LOL!!!!

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

lol.. ya never know.. well we are now making our own parts.. just don't want to spend 10g for a 30 cent piece of plastic. i was saying we should make a bunch of these parts to sell to the racers. AND people with street cars, cause the part that broke off would be in your trannies. and the way its designed, i'm surprised it hasn't happened to other people. but the gear box is still 100% stock when it let go.. race car or not, its the same gear box on a lot of the 997 street cars.

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

Keep in mind that you folks are pretty much ahead of the pack when it comes to already racing the 997s. The only others may be the factory sponsored teams and they probably do a remove and replace to the entire unit. In time you folks may wind up referring a lot of business to your machine shop making your stuff today,--but for the rest of us who want our trannys to go 200,000 miles. it's unfortunate to hear that long life support has not been better addressed bt Zuffenahusen with the Japanese. (I guess I'm even happier that I signed up for the 120,000 mile, 10 year warrantee for this car!)

Re: Hello, new here.. Need some help!

Well everyone.. We have finished putting it al back together... the parts we made are better then the plastic stock pieces.. we just buttoned up the gear box last night and it seems to shift better now then it did before.. We have taken away all the play on the shift forks..
Now we only did 1-2 shift forks. We want to just test on the track to see how it does actually hold up, and if goes well, will tear down again and replace all shift fork spacers..
