    987S vs. 335i coupe

    Just tried a 335i coupe yesterday to see if the 400Nm torque really pulls or not as compared to my Box's 320Nm. With the new ZF auto box (reviewers are saying it feels like the SMG II but I would disagree) the car still pulls but overall I am underwhelmed, power isn't as direct as the 987S, and the steering lacks feel and way too light. Run Flat tires are simply aweful, makes the car bouncy and noisy... was thinking abt getting a 4dr 335i to accompany my 987S but now need to think twice... after driven the 987s its nothing comparable!

    Also the engine is quieter than a normal 330i's straight 6, must have been muted by the turbos... doesn't roar like a traditional bimmer straight 6.

    How do they compare cost wise in Hong Kong, here the BMW 335i is about $25k cheaper than the S and 6g cheaper than the base Boxster

    HKD628,000 for the 335i coupe and HKD830,000 (starting) for the Box S

    By the time i specced a 335i coupe on the configurator i was up to Pounds40k without buying stupid options. A 3 series just isn't worth that sort of money IMO, particularly with the depreciation that will acccompany the large sales volumes.

    nice looking car ont he outside and on paper performance looks impressive for the starting price but the car overall doesn;t do it for me.

    Thanks for the review and comparison. Like I've said here before, a Porsche - any Porsche - feels special all the time at any speed on any road.

    A BMW - any BMW - doesn't.

    I agree. I gave it up ultimately. Was thinking about the new 2007 7-seater X5 but actually went with something completely off the track.

    Interesting report. I drove a manual 335i coupe last week and I was quite impressed-for the type of car. It is nowhere near as direct as any Boxster or 911 and the throttle response isn't as sharp but I thought the motor was great for the price you pay. Even the ride on run-flat 19's was OK on German cobblestones and with a bit of effort you could dial out the understeer with the throttle. Maybe auto blunts the performance?

    Anyway over here you can spec one up and get it for about 50k Euros with a decent spec.

    It's not a Porsche-clearly-but as a reasonably priced mile eater with adequate performance I thought it BM's best effort for ages. A base Boxster with a bit of spec on it will be more money and a better drive but for every day use and a comfy sporty coupe the Bm's certainly worth a look in my view. I'd say try a manual if you are curious.

    Oh. And in the one I drove which was loosened up a bit the engine sounded great inside and out.

    Agreed. Have been put off spending a large amount of cash on a BMW recently. Am taking delivery of a Cayman S on Friday and got a lousy trade in on my E46 330ci. Cost Pounds35k new (ordered from germany so only paid Pounds30k) but given that it's an import and that there are loads of them have been offered Pounds10k at trade in. Has 40K on the clock and is 4 years old. Could probably do better private - but didn't want the come back, given that it needs a service, road tax, tyres, breaks, clutch, gearbox etc.. etc.. All in all about Pounds3k - Pounds4k of work - so guess i didn't do too bad after all.

    Most looking forward to finally getting my first porsche on Friday. Been reading this forum for about 2 years now and finally i'm beginning to feel like a real member!

    I am in the same boat though have not bought a P car yet as i have not found what i am looking for.

    There i a 98 Ocean Blue 911 manual at my local OPC with 66,000 km that i am going to look at this week. Only problem is it has a savanna interior that i do not care for that much. Still it is $30k cheaper than a base 987
