Difference in Sound betwenn PSE-off and Stock 997S

I searched but could not find answer to this question. How does the PSE compare to stock S exhaust on a 997S when the switch is off, is it the same sound? Also is it possible to use another switch to turn it on-off at will, finally is it much louder than stock S? As it stands the stock S has a nice throaty sound with a nice resonance at around 4k rpm, do these change, get better, etc. any description by a poetic forum member would be much appreciated in helping me unload the $3k that are burning a hole in my pocket. Also is it better to do PSE or sport shifter first if on some sort of budget? Thanks in advance...

Re: Difference in Sound betwenn PSE-off and Stock 997S

When it's turned off , it is exactly the same as the standard exhaust .
    It works as follows:
The standard mufflers have three chambers in them . The exhaust goes thru all three and then exits out thru one exhaust pipe .

The PSE has an additional exhaust pipe( from each muffler )
Each of these "bypass pipes" have a vac. operated valve inside which, when opened , allow the exhaust to already exit from the first chamber instead of going thru all three. That's why it's louder .
And yes, it's a LOT louder .Probably louder than most aftermarket mufflers. And without any resonance problems you most likely will experience from many of them.
( your neighbors will definitely appreciate you turning it off when you drive by at 6 AM or late night )

Although Porsche does not make any performance gain claims ( like the rest of the aftermarket muffler guys ) it stands to reason that with the PSE valves open, the backpressure thru the mufflers has to be a lot less since most of the exhaust only goes thru 1/3 of the muffler and all of it out thru two pipes instead of just one ( the exhaust pressure will equalize thru the mufflers and some of the exhaust will still go thru the other pipe, following the path of least resistance )

I just had mine retrofitted and love them.

Regarding a separate on-off switch for the PSE, yes you can do it as long as you have the solenoid valve and the vacuum tubing connected to activate the dampers.

All you need is a 12 V power source to open or close the solenoid, which will then open or close the valves in the exhaust pipes.
Without any controls, the PSE is normally open ( loud)
so you need the 12 V to close the valves ( deactivate PSE )

As to the short shifter, I have it as well and would not do without it.

In my opinion, if you have to chose, get the short shifter first , then the PSE.

Thank you very much for this, i reeally appreciate your input and will start with the sports shifter. Best Regards

Eternal quest for that 73 RS sound? Hmmmm... That would explain the M5...

Re: Difference in Sound betwenn PSE-off and Stock 997S

I am considering having my dealer install PSE on my 06 997S with sports chrono. I have tried to read everything on rennteam on this subject and just want to make sure that I understand how the system works. My understanding is that when you initially start the car, PSE would be off. To activate PSE, you would either activate it using the chrono function through the lever on the steering column or by pushing the sport button in the lower section of the PCM. In the normal PSE ON mode, there are speeds (or RPMs) at which the sport exhaust cuts out (reverts to the quite mode). The additional switch that has been mentioned (that can be installed in the ashtray) gives the driver more control over the system. It allows the system to function as described above, as would a factory installed unit, but would also allow for the system to be off (quite mode) when the sport mode is engaged by either the chrono function or sport button or would allow the system to be on all of the time regardless of whether the sport function is ON or not (and would be loud during the entire RPM/speed range). Do I have this right?

Re: Difference in Sound betwenn PSE-off and Stock 997S

With Sports chrono, per factory , the PSE is activated
( loud) whenever you go to sport mode.
It is very easy to make it ALWAYS loud.
All you need to do is to install an off switch in the power going to the solenoid valve.
But , if you want to make it QUIET when you are in sport mode, you will need to find a separate 12 volt power source to OPEN the solenoid valve ( it's normally closed .The solenoid opens /closes the vacuum line which in turn opens and closes the exhaust pipe dampers)
You can do this with a DPDT switch which gets power from the PSE system in one position and power from an alternate source to make it quiet in the sports mode (if the switch is in the ashtray, you can tap into the cigarette lighter wire )

    Have fun.

Re: Difference in Sound betwenn PSE-off and Stock 997S

Please anyone can answer this question: Does the PSE have any burble on the overrun sound that is more than the stock S exhaust, that is the burble you hear when you back off the gas say when in 2nd gear at 3000-5000rpm?
Also someone had mentioned the nice resonance at higher rpm from the Helmholtz chamber is decreased with the PSE, is that also true when the PSE is turned off? Thanks again

    Think of it this way.
Since the "burble " or whatever it is you are looking for is caused by your engine, not the mufflers, whatever that sound is, it will be magnified by the PSE.
Basically, you are bypassing ~ 2/3 of the mufflers.

The resonator sound comes from the engine air intake ,not from the exhaust. PSE or otherwise.
If it appears to be decreased at higher RPM's it's because the PSE get's so loud that it's drowned out, not because it's no longer there .
( actually , you don't really hear the resonator. The sound frequency it produces is designed to cancel out some of the sound from the engine intake at lower RPM'S /speed , to help conform with stricter noise emissions in some countries.
The resonator damper closes at higher speeds and then it no longer cancels out the engine sound. That's why it sounds louder )

    Hi JCS,

I've read on different forums. One person cut the red/blue wire (positive), while some people cut the light/green wire (negative)

Does it matter which wire I splice?

It does not matter which one you cut.
I prefer to cut the power myself ( red/blue) and I installed the switch in the ashtray .
