    XM Satellilte Radio enters into long-term pack with Porsche

    Financial press release: PCNA and XM Satellite Radio today announced a new long-term agreement to equip Prosche vehicles for the U.S. market with XM, the nation's leading satellite radio service. The arrangement begins in....2007!

    I'm happy yet saddened. Happy to see that possibly more P cars equipped with satellite radio yet saddened to see that XM will be the only choice. I find the programming on Sirius more to my tastes.

    I agree a choice is best but it seems most auto makers are doing this. I'm sure money is involved.

    Same here. I have five Sirius accounts. I prefer it over XM. I beleive its better suited to high end cars and their buyers.

    I couldn't be happier that Porsche is progressing with this technology. I love XM. Since it will be already in the car it will be cheap to activate the service. For exisitng Sirius, it's not like you'll need to buy a device. So what you're left with is crappy old radio or new sattelite. Seems like the value prop is getting slightly better.

    Does the Cayman come with Sat radio? This is great if it does which would mean Porsche should be putting it in the 997 soon. Well one would think that anyway. I know you can get it in the Cayenne.

    I prefer XM over Sirius also. I don't know why Sirius would be considered high end as most of their stations have a lower bit rate than XM and frequently cuts out for no reason.

    XM has a larger library of songs so you tend not to hear the same songs over and over and over. XM for me.

    I believe the drop out is due to antenna placement. After three years of Sirius in my Range Rover (after market Sirius unit) I have only had problems with signal lose in tunnels. I have never lost the signal with no obstructions overhead.

    Suncoast is advertising "Satellite Radio Retrofit for PCM - 997" for $1,063.95 with your choice of XM or Sirius.

    Interesting...the retrofit option allows you to use BOTH! Not sure if that's really the case. Will that change once this new XM agreement goes into effect?

    You have choose one or the other with this feature before you order. The press releases all call the new agreement 'exclusive' with XM, so I can only assume that will be true.

    I had the retrofit option put in my 997 and I love it. I chose XM because my other 2 cars have it. To me Sat radio should at least be an option in the 997. Heck for the price we pay for the car it should be standard!

    Just wish the muppets in Porsche HQ would wake up and understand that iPOD connectivity is much more important than catering to what amounts to a cash deal with a satellite radio firm. If FORD can do it, come on Porsche, grow up.

    There's talk of XM buying Sirius out...distant rumors, but then you can have all the sat stations; Howard Stern AND Oprah!!! What a couple that will make...

    I think it is a matter of opinion. If I had to chose between iPod or Sat radio I would go with Sat radio every time. My iPod is nice but I listen to Sat radio for new music. I use my iPod on the airplane during my travels as that is all I have. If I were a car maker and I could get money from Sat radio that would be a no brainer.

    My point is more related to the fact that both connectivity iPod and Sat radio options are nothing special, and for most manufacturers commodity options which consumers expect. Catering to the US market for Sat radio is fine, but Porsche are then missing an opportunity globally where every geography could take advantage of an iPod connection. Surely Porsche could generate considerably more revenue for an iPod option than that of a US only Sat radio option.
