    Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

I asked this question over on 6speed, and got some interesting replies, so I thought I would post it here, too.

With 996 GT3 prices slumping as the 997 model gets closer and closer, it looks like close to a $50k premium to get a new 997 vs a 996.

997 GT3 with a few options, after taxes, etc should come close to $115k, right? And that assumes no PCCB.

I am thinking 996 GT3 prices will head into the low mid $70's before too long. They are already dipping into the upper $70's now. So say $75k after taxes.

Okay, that is closer to a $40k difference, but if you add PCCB to your 997, you are back to a $50k spread.

Wow. That is a heck of a premium. You do get a new car with a new warranty and better abilities. But is that worth +$50k?

    Opinions?

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

Isn't this the same comparision of the 996 to the 997? And the consensus was what?.....the 997 was way ahead, right?

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

Buy the cheaper one for the track (if that's its use). Don't forget that you'll pay alot more in tax & license on the new one too.

The 996GT3 is already a very fine car (arguably a better track car with the non-sunroof and non-PASM - gives more aftermarket alternatives and better headroom for a helmet).

Also, it's easier to absorb the cost of a track accident with a used car.

It seems to me that the biggest advantage with the 997 version would be the tires (MPSC) which can be fitted to the 996 version easily and a bit friendlier ride on the street.

Very good advise. Besides saving 50K is a lot of money...

No...and I tell you something more! If you plan to buy the car just for the track, buy a 996 GT3Mk1, cheaper, lighter, stronger and probably more valuable in the next future then the Mk2!

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

P.s. I know that probably you are thinking: "Hey, wait a minute, this guy had a 996 GT3Mk2 and now bought a 997GT3!" and you are right...but as soon as I saw the 997GT3 in Geneva, I felt in a deeply and truly love with this car...that's why I decided to buy one, but if your question it's only about performances, the difference between 996GT3 Mk2 and 997GT3 it's not worth 50k $!

Heh, aren't there laws against this sort of thing? I know there are in Texas. lol I hope your car is female!

Good advice, but we did not receive the GT3 MkI in the US...

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

If you track a used one a lot you may need to spend quite a bit for reparation, like gearbox, flywheel, katalisators, lambda sensort etc...

I'm switching from a GT3 Mk1 to a new 997 GT3 becuse I spend too much in reparation compared to the loss of value of a new one.

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

Well, for the 50k you can get a slightly used Lotus Elise with all the good bits! That's what I did.

I love Porsches (I've got a Cayman S now, and expect to have some model of GT3 at some point). The 996 GT3 is supposed to be fantastic (if a bit extreme for the street). If your prediction on price for the 996 GT3 is correct, the 997 GT3 better blow the socks off of it to be worth an extra Lotus Elise!

I say get the 996 and an Elise

I was considering the 996 GT3 when the heat on that car died down due to the 997 hitting the streets, but got the Cayman S as my daily driver.

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

I have just ordered my 997 GT3.I am sure it is not worth what it is going to cost me.But it is much better looking and the interior quality is far superior(no old Audi aircon controls than my 996.I also have an Elise 111r what a hoot.It is just such fun to drive.

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

spend $10k in upgrades on a 996 GT3, another $15k in PDE (Porsche Driving Experience) track-driving school, and pocket the remaining $25k... $15k in track-driving courses will allow you to take on any 997 GT3 (an possibly any 997 TT), any day of the week, and twice on sundays

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

lol - Marwan, does that mean you have lost your fire for the 997 GT3? You seemed pretty darned psyched, if I recall correctly.

    Re: Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than the 996 GT3?

I still adore the car... but $50k is A LOT OF $$$
