    PCM Radio Display

Can anyone help explain why my FM stations display as shown in the attached picture. Is there an option I can select to change to call letters or frequency? I have read the manual, and it says something like these designations indicate that the stations are sending other type of information. Thanks for any help.

    Re: PCM Radio Display

On the right part of your screenshot I see the letters AS.
From what I remember (it's hard to talk about it when I am not in my car) that mean AutoStore. There is an option somewhere in the menu where you can chose the Listening Habits or something like that. But the abbreviation it's done automatically by the car software reading the info from the RDS system (each station has some text transmitted using the RDS protocol). You could try to disable RDS and you should see only frequencies in the PCM display.

    Re: PCM Radio Display

Once you are in the screen from your screenshot, you can press the "Set" button (on the right part of the screen) and you can access the setting menu. This is valid for each screen you are in (Main, Navi, Tel, etc.).

    Re: PCM Radio Display

bump. anyone else's car look like this? i would like my display to just list the radio station without the call letters, just the station number.

    Re: PCM Radio Display

Mine shows the same nonsense. The manual suggests it shows call letters:

    Re: PCM Radio Display

Has anyone figured anything more about this? I believe I have read in the PCM manual that the radio shows those "odd" displays when that stored station is capable of transmitting "radio text" data. The station numbers will be displayed if the station does not transmit any RDS information. I wonder if the call letters only reflects stations that trasmit call letter information only and not RDS information.

    Re: PCM Radio Display

I'm sorry to sound this way, but I gave up on it. The PCM is so full of holes it's almost pathetic.

I consider my PCM to be the same level as a really bright kid's science fair project. As far as the kid and judges are concerned it is a brilliant achievement. Why? Because it works for the kid who designed it!

    Re: PCM Radio Display

Just got my first Porsche (06 C4) and have been wondering the same thing about the radio PCM display. Those labels assigned by the PCM are useless, making it impossible to know what station is stored where when glancing at the main menu. A setting to display the freq or call letters would be much more useful. Has anyone figured out if it's possible?

    Re: PCM Radio Display

I wish I could offer an answer. Mine shows the call letters. Try to manually set your stations and see what happens. Maybe this is in auto mode where the radio sets the stations for you.

Correction, some of mine show the call letters and some show the other.

    Re: PCM Radio Display

Some stations transmit not only the call letters but also other information like song name and singer.

I noticed that the strange labels are assigned to a station when the text displayed at the time I press the store button is too long (e.g. not the call letters but a song name).

    Re: PCM Radio Display

    Perhaps this info will help...

RDS in Europe is called RBDS in NA. The standards are similar, but adhered to more in Europe. RDS/RBDS calls for an 8-character static string and a 64-character dynamic string. The 8-character is for the Program Service feature (amongst others) and the 64-character is for Radio Text feature.

The problem is when radio stations dynamically broadcast the 8-character string. PCM doesn't know how to handle this, thus the "L" designations. It's not the PCM's fault; it's the fault of the radio stations broadcasting incorrect RBDS signals.

As an aside, the PCM is presently incapable of displaying dynamic Radio Text info. Perhaps in the future...

    Re: PCM Radio Display

Thanks for the information from everyone. Also, just as a point of clarification, my example showed the display using auto-store, but the same issue exists even if stations are manually stored. Oh well, at least it makes my BMW's i-drive look good by comparison.
