Cayman GTR, can it out perform a GT3

I heard somewhere that it can and its a similar price so whats the reasons not to consider it as a competitor to a turbo and GT3. Anyone got any imput on this I'd greatly appreciate it for I am not very educated w/regard to this car.
For those who don't know the GTR is a tuned Cayman
    I could'nt find the manufacturer/tuner website so...no link

3.8 liter GTR - based on the Porsche Cayman platform

As any automotive engineer will quickly point out, a mid-engine layout is optimum for maximum handling and overall performance. With the Cayman, Porsche has created a truly impressive mid-engine vehicle. Farnbacher Loles Motorsports has taken the Cayman S and created the awesome GTR. The GTR significantly improves upon the Cayman's already impressive performance in both acceleration and handling, and wrapped it in a jaw-dropping exterior. The GTR is being produced in a limited run of only 20 cars with each vehicle built to the owner's individual specifications as either a complete vehicle or using the customer's own supplied Cayman.

    Limited Edition GTR Features:
    400-HP 3.8 liter X-51 Engine
    REVO Software
    Cold Air Intake
    Custom Headers and Free-Flow Exhaust
    Third Radiator for Additional Cooling
    Hi-Performance Clutch
    Limited Slip Differential
    Short Shifter
    CROSS 15-way Adjustable Coilover Suspension
Upgraded Front and Rear Sway Bars
    Porsche Ceramic Brakes (PCCB)

Re: Cayman GTR, can it out perform a GT3

GTR can't compete in terms of bullet-proof reliability on the track. The GT3 motor is a race-bred dry-sump unit that is almost identical to the ones used in the Cup Cars. The X51 motor is an enlarged Boxster motor that has a wet sump and was never intended to be a serious track motor...

If you intend to use the car on the street, then maybe the GTR is a better choice...

I agree with the basic premise of this (GT3 motor is dry sump and better suited for racing), but on the other hand, plenty of people hammer the holy crap out of their M96 motor cars all the time at the track, and don't have oil starvation issues. As a matter of fact, I think Porsche motorsport sells baffles for the M96 motor which address this very issue. M Team is racing that Cayman and I just read in Panorama about those guys that are already winning (outright) club races with their cayman.

Popular wisdom says you can't (?) run slicks with the wet-sump M96 (without the baffles), but I know of at least 2 boxsters and one cayman that club race, and I would assume they are on slicks. What are they using?

So I would say the answer is a bit of a mix. For race-developed reliability / longevity, the GT1-derived motor in the GT3 would appear to be superior. But that doesn't mean the GTR can't outperform the GT3. The question is where would the durability of the motor come into play. Until that point is determined, it is an impossible question to answer.

A head-to-head comparo between the GT3 and the GTR would be TOO sweet! Excellence and other Porsche rags, ARE YOU LISTENING? You have all been saying how the Cayman is da bomb in terms of handling, so do a comparo and crown the king of the (track) Porsches!

I think a Cayman GTR would be pretty damn close (if not better) than the GT3...until you went to sell it. Then you would have a much narrower market of interest. If you could find the right person...bingo. Otherwise, to all those 911-centric folks, it would "just" be another Cayman.

Re: Cayman GTR, can it out perform a GT3

Somebody explains why the rear engined 911 is so bad and yet it won a gazillion of races vs mid-engined car...
e.g. in FIA GT the 996 vs Ferrari 360...
Now the new 997 GT3 RSR with the 3.8 which was not bad at all during its first race..
It's a different driving for sure than mid-engined...but it has advantages too...breaking, traction...
    (and I don't mention the fun factor...lol)
The only bad thing I see is the limitation of # of cylinders etc...

Valid statements, but when Porsche (the company) goes out to win a race (vs selling cars to customers to race), they use a mid-engined car (GT1, etc). Plus their super car is mid-engined. Kinda hard to argue with that.

But obviously the rear-engined concept has strengths, or the 911 would not be so successful on the track or the road.

I WANT A HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON!!!! How cool would that be. I wonder how much Porsche would pay to bury the results? lol

Re: Cayman GTR, can it out perform a GT3

I drove the Cayman GTR test mule and it is one sweet car. I know first hand that the Cayman handles better than my TT too. The real difference between a Cayman GTR and a GT3 or even a GT3 RS is that you can get a Cayman GTR now (have it built for you) or stand in line for a GT3. I chose the GT3 RS because of its resale value. I'll just have to wait.

Oh, you lucky dog you. An RS...mmmmmm...

Can you give any more impressions on the GTR? Would love to hear what it was like? Did they do anything to address oil starvation in high-G cornering? I have heard Porsche Motorsport sells some baffles...

The GTR was fully lowered and with the Cross coil overs took the Conn backroads with ease. I was unfortunate that I was not in an area that I knew, and the highway entrances/exits were not good for high speed cornering. The GTR suspension felt good ofer the somewhat lumpy back roads, but a bit queezy on the highway. I think it would be a mean track machine, and the exhaust note makes my stock TT sound tame. I don't know if they did anything about oil starvation. It has a ecu tweaked 3.8 motor and they were not done with the programming yet, car kept throwing error codes upon hard acceleration. It was supposed to be done a week after I drove it, prob done by now. I'm driving my TT at Lime Rock track Nov 3rd, and am staying over till Sat and will prob see the Farnbacher people then. Doubt that I will get to drive it again though. Would be real nice to track it and compare it to the TT. One can only dream......

Re: Cayman GTR, can it out perform a GT3

I had a ride in a RUF Boxster 3.8 X51 conversion, and the power felt very similar to my previous 996TT.
