98 RON Fuel vs. 95 RON?

Does anyone have a definitive answer on if any harm can be done using cheaper 95 RON fuel in 987 with the new 245bhp unit?

The manual states 98 RON but then mentions the engine will "adapt" to 95 RON.

I've only had the car three weeks and so far the comfort factor has had me using V-Power (might still be called Optimax in other countries).

For normal road driving am I likely to notice any significant difference or (importantly) do any damage/increase engine wear by using the cheaper 95 RON fuel (still tend to stick to Shell rather than the Supermarket stuff).

I'm not sure if there is a black and white answer but I'd appreciate any info/opinons etc.

    cheers,
    Paul

Re: 98 RON Fuel vs. 95 RON?

95 RON will be fine. The engine is fitted with cylinder - specific knock-sensors which adjust the timing to suit different grades of fuel. There might be avery slight drop in performance coupled with an equally slight increase in fuel consumption, but that's about it. I do tend to use V Power in mine most of the time, however, for the sake of saving, say Pounds4 per fill up.

Do stick to premium fuel brands, though. Avoid supermarket fuel like a plague. It IS inferior as it lacks the additives that premium brands have. Engine internal cleanliness and definitely fuel consumption will deteriorate.

Re: 98 RON Fuel vs. 95 RON?

Yeah I just seem to be eating fuel at the moment due to the fact that I want to get in the thing and drive it

I guess 99 RON could offer better economy too, of course I'll be able to the maths and see if I get more/less mpg with 95 RON but if there is no tangible benefit just for going up and down the A5 to work it makes sense to me to use 95 RON or maybe alternate 2:1 or 3:1 top-ups with 95/99 RON.

Re: 98 RON Fuel vs. 95 RON?

As Dreamcar said, knock sensors will cause ignition to be retarded when engine is run on lower octane fuel, so no damage will result.

When I have had to fill up the tank with 95 RON fuel, generally when travelling in other European countries where 98 RON is not universally available, I think I have noticed less spontaneous throttle response and a greater tendancy for engine revs to fall towards stalling speed when pulling away from rest, unless I don't pay additional attention to careful clutch control.

When I have the choice, I would never go for 95 octane just to reduce the pain in the pocket.

No. You would get the same result as using 98 RON fuel.

Sorry, I meant over 95 RON (as V-Power seems be 99 RON and not 98 RON).

To be honest, I doubt whether the fuel consumption gain when using 98 / 99 RON over 95 RON would pay for the cost saving in using the cheaper fuel, but as I said earlier for the sake of saving, say, Pounds4 per fill I wouldn't want to lose any sharpness in response or performance however slight.

When you buy a sports car, it's best to throw the calculator away and just enjoy it to the full

Re: 98 RON Fuel vs. 95 RON?

I get about 2mpg more with 98RON over 95RON with the 986S so its more or less break even but I go for the good stuff because there is definitely more urge across the entire rev range

Re: 98 RON Fuel vs. 95 RON?

I've always achieved 10% more mpg on optimax than ordinary 95ron shell, so the 6% extra cost is irrelevant to me, and better throttle response is worth having too.

Strangely on the odd occassion that i've had to use Tesco 99ron, its been worse for mpg than ordinary Shell (albeit this is limited information, with just a couple of fills in between Optimax)
