Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

noticed that my 05 987 boxster s is going a bit bald in all corners. looked up a few uk tyre websites, black circles, pneus tyres, etc. seems with fitting, etc, i'll be waving goodbye to the best part of 1k!! anyone know any better? i'm in london

    thanks

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

    check www.reifendirect.de
i believe they have branches in all European countries.
http://www.mytyres.co.uk/ seems to be the British one..

A full set of tires should run u app. 7-800Pounds unless u go for specialty tires.
I think N-marked (stiffer, Porsche approved rear tires) are a lot more expensive than regular tires - so you may wanna take that into consideration.
IMO the N-marked tires are no better, but should provide more rigidity and less "coldspotting".
I experience coldspotting with my current, non- N-marked tires....but not enough for me to wanna cash out the extra $$$

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

is there any risk for putting non N rates tyres? (e.g. insurance, warranty etc)? thx!

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

If you fancy a drive into the sticks I've struggled to find better than Micheldever Tyres just outside Basingstoke. Probably the only non-OPC that I'd trust with my car too.

I have never heard it should be a problem.
Chekc your service/warranty card. I bet it doesnt demand the use of N-tyres.
The N-marked tires dont make the car safer, only less prone to coldspotting, and supposedly makes the wheel stiffer/more rigid and hence the handling a bit firmer/sharper.
To the best of my knowledge it is in no way a matter of safety.
A premium non-N tyre is still a very, very good tyre. And since the same non-N tores are ok for other hi-performance cars (some even a lot more hi-performance than a Boxster) there is no reason why any regular premium tyre would pose a danger or perform poorly compared to N-tires.

    Hope this long-a55 reply helps

In the UK if you're trading the car in/selling back to an OPC they will insist on N rated tyres to be fitted to the car

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

"N" rated tyres are developed in partnership with Porsche and the car set up is based on them. I would not, under any circumstances fit non N rated tyres. Or any other non approved parts for that matter. You buy an expensive sports car, don't cheap-skate on maintenance or parts.

Don't forget that tyres could be the only thing between you and a half hour appointment with an undertaker.

In Japan if you crash without N rated tires - you have no insurance! Whether they are any good or not, I would get them purely because you really don't want to hurt yourself or someone else - but particularly without insurance!

Correct Tim, but it aint the "N" that separates you from Heaven's Gate
In DK N-tires are almost double up and hard to come by.

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

You can get them much cheaper than that.
Got my rears done at ProTyre in Poole last time.
Did an OK job, no damage. Can't remember the exact price, but it was closer to Pounds200 each than Pounds300.

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

Definitely check with your insurance. Ignoring any performance benefits I would assume Porsche fit N rated tyres for safety reasons, and if that is what they designate as the only tyre rating for the vehicle and you have an accident it's a potential "get out" for your insurers if they find you're using tyres that aren't to the manufacturers spec.

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

Bracknell tyres are part of the Micheldever group - offer same price - they also offer a 'premium service' for no extra charge which is supposedly more thorough and careful with the fitting (not sure what that means they normally do !!), and you have a specific fitting appointment.

I know loads of extra fussy P owners who have used them and all report first class service, care of the rimns and the best prices around.

    As a recent example 225/40/18 N rated Michelins for the front of a 996 - Pounds113 each.

Avoid sat mornings - you'll be in a HUGE queue

My local tyre depot got me a 265/35/19 N rated Micchelin Pilot Sport for Pounds228 whne i had a puncture - this is cheaper than mytyres and blackcircles quote.

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

Does having TPMS complicate using non-Porsche tyre suppliers?

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

I know Bracknell have worked on a 928GTS and that had the tyre pressure monitoring fitted - you just don't replace the valves. I'm sure an OPC wouldn't change them either, due to the additional cost.

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

Southall Tyres are very cheap but I've not used them so cannot comment on the care they take. Protyre in Slough still used a torque wrench instead of pneumatic gun last time I went, although they are not as cheap as they used to be

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

Just found my paperwork for my 2 rears from ProTyre Poole:
    2 x 265/40R18 Michelin PS2 N3, Pounds416 fitted

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

started ringing round today for some rear boots - after two calls to local suppliers i'm currently at Pounds203 each, fully fitted incl vat for 265/35ZR19 N1 Michelin PS2

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

I got a set from Bracknell Tyre and Battery for Pounds770 fitted and wheels respected by their fitters as the owner has a nice car!!!

Re: Not far off Pounds1000 for new tyres!!!

Tried ringing Bracknell tyres on Saturday - 14 attempts, no one bothered to answer, i know they get busy, but no excuse for not answering the phone.

not had chance to ring today, will try tomorrow.
