    GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

    http://car-reviews.automobile.com/Mercedes/review/2006-mercedes-benz-gl-class-preview/1639/

Definitely not comparable and of a different focus but what's everyone's inputs?

At first I wasn't so sure about the look of the car but after the debut, I was sold. It was a GL 500 in BLACK and the interior is top notch.

I was considering Range Rover Sport 4.4 Supercharged, Audi Q7, BMW X5 2007 new generation and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Range Rover is great but reliability is really an issue according to a good friend per ERDoc. Inputs?

Audi Q7 at close to a million HKD is a bit ridiculous based on its marque.

BMW X5 2007 debutant will be a 4.8L V8 1.1 million HKD but considering most car company's strategy, you will soon find X5 3.0 or 3.5 running around at 1/2 the price.

Finally, GL 450 and 500. Pricy but it seems to me that it will not be below 1.2.

However, I have some doubts on it being built in Alabama. Can some present ML owners shed some lights on reliabilities? No data on JD POWER but for sure the previous ML was terribly built.

Cayenne Turbo has a facelift next year but we all know after its debutant in 2003, the car is due to be phased out in 2009 after the facelift?

The GL has a huge presence and it is very very big XXL 7 seater.

Any input? For or against the GL from LOOKS, RELIABILITIES?

Of course you will all say Cayenne Turbo but just wanna get some inputs from the pros.

Re: GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

You may want to wait for the GL63 AMG, just a little hint.
Compared to the GL500, the Cayenne Turbo is a sportscar. The GL series is very nice but the idea of the concept is for serious off-roading and/or commuting 7 people and a lot of luggage. If you're single or if you don't have more than one kid, stick with the ML series.

...jgc srt-8 is not built to EVER go offroad or handle any snow, only laggage and speed...

...for laggage and speed there are much better SEDAN alternatives consuming MUCH less gas...

Re: GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

Agree with RC. Cayenne Turbo and GL 500 aren't exactly apple to apple comparisons. I think 99.9% of the buyers of a GL never really even touch gravel or snow. I sat in it and it felt more like a S sedan. Think it is more targetted to those who are sick of driving a S500 and want something different to lug around 7 people.

It is probably comparable to a Cadillac more like it.

    It is comparable only to
    http://www.cadillac.com/cadillacjsp/model/gallery.jsp?model=escalade

and Mercedes is trying to capture that market.

    http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/suv/112_0605_2007_mercedes_benz_gl450/index.html

I think Cayenne is in a different space.

Re: GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

I own both Cayenne Turbo and the GL450. The GL is a NICE car. It's smooth, luxurious, comfortable, and roomy. I am married with two boys and a live-in help. The 7 seater is great for weekend trips. I had to buy this as my Cayenne Turbo was totally unsuitable for this job and I did NOT want to give it up. If you don't have a need for a family hauler, Cayenne Turbo is the way to go. There is no SUV out there that comes even close. If you do need the 7 seater or just a roomy SUV for your family, the GL is perfect for it.

Re: GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

Thanks very very helpful. Then I do need the GL because I currently own a 987s which is only a two seater convertible. The GL 500 just arrived in HKG and my father test drove it and he said it was really smooth like a sedan. However, the only worry I have is build quality and can you comment on that end? Afterall it is made in Alabama and recent years' Mercedes qualities were all questionable to me. The bang for the buck and a bargain to have next on the list would be the 7-seater AUDI Q7.

Re: GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

The GL's 3rd row is more functional then the Q7's. IMO, the GL is also noticeably more refined then the Audi. Build quality is excellent. I also have an '03 E500 and an '05 SL500. The GL holds its own. I've only had it for 2 months now and 2300 miles. I've had no issues yet. One thing I need to mention; those options add up quickly. Price seems reasonable at the base rate, but you will add 30% in options easy.

I had the chance to move a GL500 for a couple of km's a few days ago.
    Here's my impression:
    1. build quality seems to be pretty good, especially compared to my "old" ML55 AMG. Even compared to my Cayenne Turbo, build quality is excellent, you won't be disappointed.
    2. the GL feels heavy and it feels the same way when you're driving it, especially when driving through curves. Ride comfort is excellent though.
    3. the engine feels strong but compared to the Cayenne Turbo, it can't impress me at all.
    4. interior space is great, absolutely fantastic, my kids and my wife would love it.
    5. to be honest, the GL is somehow "ugly". It isn't as nice as I thought, I saw one in black and it was OK but this one was silver and it was...ugly, sorry to say that. I'm not too much impressed with Cayenne looks either but at least the Turbo version has a decent front.

Re: GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

Any reason why you are not considering the ML63 instead? Space maybe?

Re: GL 500 V. Cayenne Turbo

had my ML350 over a year and a half now no issues at all, i like the truck build is good no rattles or anything like it was in my previous ml55!!! Preparing to switch to ML63!
