    with or without sunroof

Question to P drivers in Europe (apparently, US P buyers cannot delete this option): I'm looking to order a C4S coupe and not sure whether to get it with or w/out a sunroof. I've read some threads that say it can be noisy at speed, and that it doesn't really belong to a coupe. Any thoughts. Thanks.

I don't believe that it is noisy at all and I really enjoy having it open on a nice day. However, if I were in Europe and was doing a lot of track time, I'd probably delete it.
And, then only if I was good on the track

    Re: with or without sunroof

I agree with devo. Having the sunroof open would be nice at times.

    Re: with or without sunroof

I ordered my first Porsche a month ago and I spent at least a month deciding on the sunroof. Finally I order one. My rationale was that it is nice for air circulation (I have one on my other car) and with my driving - rarely track - I will not notice any noise (never heard of it) or added weight in the wrong place as some suggest

    Re: with or without sunroof

In a c4s, i would get the sunroof. it won't hurt anything, and you might use it occassionally, plus it may be worth a something in resale. the only reason if doesn't belong on a GT3 is because it adds pointless weight at the worst possible place for track driving. on a street car, especially one as heavy as a c4s, it won't matter a bit (although i think it does take up some headroom, if you are quite tall).

    Re: with or without sunroof

I configured my 997 without a sunroof. I think it really kills the beautiful line of the car.
The car has airco, and if you want some real fresh air, drive with a window open!

How does the sunroof alter the line of the car? I don't get that one at all.

I do however agree with the open window thing. I think sunroofs are over rated. If you want that experience, get a targa or a cab. If you want the sportiest 911 out there - it's coupe without a sunroof.

That's why Porsche built the Cayman S without a sunroof. It's stiffest, lightest, and sportiest.

But if you really like sunroofs, then get one - it's a minor compromise.

    Re: with or without sunroof

    Thanks for your feedback guys.

Silver Bullet, I think you nailed it : "If you want the sportiest 911 out there - it's coupe without a sunroof."

It will be an X51, PCCB, C4S. Can't decide on the -20mm SS without a test drive ... I will be tracking, but no more than a couple of times a year. I'm leaning now towards deleting the sunroof.

    Re: with or without sunroof

Not to bring this up, but a C4 is the least sporty of the 911s. It has the weight of a turbo, without the actual power. AWD is not optimal for track driving at all, unless you are in inclimate conditions. That front diff is HEAVY! If you want the sportiest (fastest) 911 (outside a GT3, etc), get a standard C2S with X51. It will run right by that C4S at the track. And unless you just HAVE to have them, save the money for the PCCB as well. It is an incremental improvement, for a lot of $$$, which sounds like it won't see much track time anyway.

But if you want the foul-weather friendliest 911, then the C4 is definitely the way to go.

If your heart is set on a C4S...none of this matters anyway. Buy the car that makes you happy. I just wanted to make sure you weren't under any false impressions.

    Re: with or without sunroof

You ask for opinions so I'd recommend you get the sunroof. People harp on about weight and then happily buy heated seats, adaptive seats, and all other kinds of heavy options. How many of these people are themselves carry 10, 20, extra kg in fat???

I have the sunroof and it's great. It does not spoil the lines of the car, like a rear wiper can and it does allows air into the car better than windows alone.

The targa is great, but having driven them and myself also owning a convertible, the targa is not the answer if you want that open air driving sensation.

Bottomline is you will not notice worse performance from having a sunroof.

As others have pointed out, going for an all wheel drive C4 system will actually have a bigger impact on your perception of speed and handling than something like a sunroof.

    Re: with or without sunroof

I do not like sunroofs as a) there is noise at hught speeds
    b) You still loose some of the cars torsionnal power and
    c) when it gets a bit older and the joints need a slight replacment you may start haveing some problems especially if you live in a country with variations of Tempreture.

    Best regards,

    Florent

    Re: with or without sunroof

Thanks adrift.... I have been reading about the extra weight on the 4S, but I will be a frequent visitor of the Alps area (Chamonix and neighboring slopes) during the winter months where my previous 996 C2S struggled on the icy roads. Perhaps it was my driving! My biggest concern with the sunroof was the rattle and hum, and trying to offset the weight issue given that I'm getting the 4S.

    Re: with or without sunroof

The C4s definitely get the turbo's extra wide booty. Worth the price of admission alone.

No surprise. Your future C4S will struggle too. It's down to running summer tires rather than winter tires. They lose grip below about 40F.

One of the US car mags tested a number of cars available with 2wd and awd. Equiped them with summer tires and winter tires. The 2wd (fwd and rwd) with snow tires easily outperformed awd cars on summer tires.

Frankly I doubt the value of awd. In Chicago where it snows and gets down to -20F I have no problems with snow (providing the front spoiler clears it, but that would be aproblem in the C4/S also) in my C2S which gets a set of winter tires put on it every year.

Talk to someone at Porsche who REALLY understands the differences between the benefits of winter tires and awd, then decide.

As to the sunroof it's a noisy waste of money. Buy a Cab or use the A/C.
