Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT3s?

In the following thread, the Porsche NA CEO/Pres said the GT3RS for the US will NOT have a sunroof, due to pressure from customers and dealers.

That means they have to crash test the 997-bodied cars to be able to qualify them for sale in the US, right? Now if they crash test the cars for the RS, isn't that going to qualify the regular GT3 body as well? Now the Pres also explicitly said the US GT3's WILL still get sunroofs, but couldn't he mean just 07 models? I can see Porsche not wanting to sabotage 07 sales by announcing a sunroofless GT3 will be available in 08.

Are the regular GT3 and the RS similar enough that qualifying one chassis would also qualify the other?

    This seems like utter BS!

The RS is being made in such small numbers and as none of the Euro/UK cars have sunroofs, why would the change the RS production for the US and add a sunroof?!?

The US GT3 has a sunroof because it's an option on all GT3s for any country; where as the GT3 RS does not have the sunroof as an option in any country, so they are hardly going to add it JUST for the USA.

Pure marketing-wank if you ask me! "Oh, we're listening to our customers, so the RS will NOT have a sunroof!"... if anyone hears a Porsche Dealer or PCNA say this, you should tell them it never did! So pull the other one while you're at it!

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

But the whole reason Porsche is forcing the sunroof on the US (so everyone claims), is that they aren't going to crash-test the 997 sunroof-less chassis required to safety qualify the car for the US. If the RS is coming to the US sans sunroof, then that means they ARE going to have to crash test the required cars, doesn't it?

Does EVERY 911 (997) in NA have a sunroof?

    yes

Okay, you guys are going to get screwed

All joking aside, isn't there are rule that if the car is low production numbers, they can avoid the testing?

If not, and they promised to provide you with roof-hole-less RSs, then they must be prepared to crash a fair few to gain type approval

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing...if the number of vehicles is small enough, might it be able to avoid the testing.

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

Oddly enough, manufacturers do not actually have to crash test a car... they just have to confirm that if crashed the car will pass the DOT test. I'm sure that porsche knows that if a car with a hole will pass, one without will also pass...

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

Guys it's a business decision. If you can tell Porsche how many more cars they will sell if they had the sunroof delete option or if they didn't have a sunroof and the numbers made sense they would build it. If you can't they will not. Remember Porsche is like everyone else, they have to show a profit. Really how many people are we talking about? In another post I read that Porsche had sold all of the GT3 that are coming to the US.

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

If they have, then the dealers have bought them. There are still build slots left for 07's. I am thinking hard about one myself.

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

Will having a sunroof in the GT3 keep you from buying it?

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

It would seriously annoy me if I bought an 07 (and was forced to have a sunroof), but then 08s were available without them. That would chap my hide. If I do order one, I will order one for a late-in-the-year build so I can hear about the model year 08's before I have to take delivery. That way if the 08's are available without a sunroof, I can change my order to an 08.

Re: Can we extrapolate sunroof-delete for 08 US GT

That's good thinking. Either way I'm sure the car will be awesome.
