    Call from the Ferrari dealer

Last May I was invited to place a order on the much speculated Dino. I put down a deposit fully refundable incase the project did not get the green light.

Today i recieved a phone caller from the sales manager letting me know that ferrari has officially given the go ahead and that the Dino was planned for production. Unofficiall pictures were published in the german Auto Bild Magazine.

Coupe allocation for end 2007 and Spider for 1st quarter 2008

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

Ferrari, the next Porsche... Where are these Ferrari SUV photoshop pics again?

It will be intersting to see where they place the dino vs the V10 R8 and the 997TT price/specs wise. Has much as I understand the prestige and markup on the 430 and 599, almost $200k cars, I don't think the same magic will work with a cheaper/more volume car. They should have kept the Dino under Maserati.

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

According to Auto Bild expected price is 140k euros...however i believe that 130k for the coupe and 145k for the spider......However be expected for resale price to be in the 180k much like the price increase generated by the 430 and 599.

The US price should be in the mid to high 100k

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

What does it look like? Wouldn't this pretty much put Maserati out of business?

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

if one were to visit the autobild website their is a pic on the cover....

as for the maserati, the quattroporte and the coupe a true 2+2 should make up most of their sales. A convertible hardtop is rumored to be also available hence making compete directly to the likes of the sl.

the ferrari is to be 4 meters long and to carry a 450 hp maserati based engine...

most propbably it will solely be labeled as dino and shall not sport a ferrari badge

Unfortunately I'm an IT Dino-saur (haha), hence I'm not able to scan the pics. IMO a real beauty I could be tempted...
Designwise just a modern interpretation of the old Dino.
AB says the car should come as one version only (not Coupé/Spider) with a metal folding roof á la SLK (Coupé-Cabriolet). Design most probably by Pininfarina.
Transaxle transmission + F1 gearbox, V8 425 hp (high rpm concept), Manettino, performance close to F430. Charakter described as sporty GT.

F430-successor (2009) according to the article with more power + "significantly" less weight (compared to F430) - Euro prices (Coupé) said to increase from 150K to 175k (to make room for the Dino)

DINO price rumored to be 140k Euro.
The expected Maserati sibling (M139) with same engine block, but a bit less hp (405) and significantly lower price (no further details reported).

Planned production for DINO: 4,000 cars / year (Ferrari dealer network to small to allow for the distribution of more cars).

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

    Yes please.

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

mmm.. i am a little bit worried, i just hope ferrari will not make the same mistake as porsche..

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

That would be a BIG mistake !!

    Ferrari doesn't need a "cheap" car !

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

    Isn't a manual 6spd F430 Coupe already close to 140k Euros?

About 145.000 Euros in Germany, until 1.1.2007. Used to only be 138.000 until two years ago, so it's not much more expensive than the 997TT. The Dino is going to have to be much cheaper than 140k.

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

the list price of the f430 varies from country to country....however published prices are never the actual prices of the cars... in spain (a country with a standard european tax structure) the f430 goes for 170-185k depending on options new... the 430 spider is 190-200k

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

pic from autobild however i doubt it will look anything like it

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

Thanks for the pic. Where do they plan to make it at the Maserati facility? That pic/design looks a little funky.

I agree, this is bad if true. Its not good for Ferrari's image IMO.

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

I used to share the thought.....why would ferrari be doing this.. the brand will be more accesible to a larger demographic but at the end of the day its not the case...
similar to porsche a 911 is still a 911 and i believe that the other ferrari models'image wont be hindered by the dino.

I am scheduled to recieve my 599 towards the end of summer 07 and am second (my brother third) on the dino list....so it will be nice to have this little ferrari compliment the 599

Significantly less weight sounds significantly good

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

    incredible news!

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

"F430-successor (2009) according to the article with more power + "significantly" less weight (compared to F430) - Euro prices (Coupé) said to increase from 150K to 175k (to make room for the Dino)"

Significantly less weigh could create problems with DOT in the US. I wonder what materials they will be using. The CGT is state of the art technology and it still weighs almost 3200 lbs. The 430 is around 3300lbs. This should be interesting.

    Thanks for all the information.

Nick, if Rossi's information about the new car being significantly more expensive is correct, this might mean much more CF in the new car. The 430 already has an aluminum chassis, correct?

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

should be very interesting, I read that lamborghini has same "plan" next step being lighter cars.

That would make sense. If the cars get any heavier, they will weigh as much as luxury sedans. Engine power is also close to maxing out (emissions standards must be taken into account), so the sensible thing is to reduce the cars' weights by at least 150-200 kilograms. Look at the Chevy Z06 and how its low weight makes it perform.

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

Don't believe the hype. The only real way to lose weight is to go from an aluminum space frame to a carbonfiber tub and that would only save 200lbs.

    No, not gonna happen.

What about nanotubes and similar new, hi-tech dohickies? If something can be constructed as strong as before with much less material, this could be a great way to save weight.

Good for Ferrari. This is exactly what they need to do. They also need to increase produciton numbers in general to keep customers happy, prices lower, and be more accountable. Right now Ferrari gets away murder, producing inferior looking cars, because the volume is so low. Let's hope the Dino has the classic Ferrari look (e.g. F355) instead of the weird, gimmicky, ricey models like the F430/Spyder.

Regardless of how/what, this is the direction sports cars should take and if this is true, I applaud Ferrari for it.

The "hp arms race" is reaching a climax, in my opinion. These incredulous massive engines are simply not the direction that car companies should take.

Weight restrictions and comperable power will make everyone happy. Who seriously needs more than 500 hp!?!

Re: Call from the Ferrari dealer

I assume the new Dino will be front-engined?

I don't think Ferrari will reduce prices, I'm afraid unfortunately even the opposite will happen.

Concerning the looks of the new Dino, as it will be front-engined, I think a design like the gorgeous 355 will not be possible.
