MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

Im seriosuly contemplating getting a 987s MY2007, but I am worried about the (too) many stories in here about hard rides due to faulty PASM systems.

(And btw, to TVMan who had PASM trouble on his Cayman: The "normal" mode PASM ride IS supposed to be VERY smooth compared to sport mode. It's like the difference between a Golf and an Elise.)

I havent been paying close attention to the changes made from MY 2006 to MY 2007, so besides VarioCam and 3.4 litres etc, have there been any changes made to correct the PASM trouble or is Porsche treating this like the "non-existing" RMS issue?

So will the MY07 continue with the exact same PASM system as MY06?
Or will MY07 get the GT3 PASM system, which - from what Ive been told - works a lot better than that of the 987.

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

I think the PASM issues are either:
    a) Relatively rare, or
    b) Most owners the PASM don't throw their cars around bends at speed to notice, or drive mostly in town or in a straight line, and think it's normal behaviour.

I think it's most likely that you'll be fine. Test drive a few different PASM cars to see if you can spot anything?

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

It might be tempting fate, but i have none of the PASM issues reported by the other 2/3 people on here - its just very very hard in sport mode so i don;t bother. I enjoy the ride and grip in normal mode.

And i do throw the car around, unlike some apparently
Normal mode is the only way to find grip when hooning the best B roads in the UK.

It seems that Porsche did redesign the software (though can't tell you which month they commenced to do so).
The first 987 series PASM-cars indeed seemed somewhat too soft in normal mode to me, whereas the newer cars I drove (including my own) are fine IMO.
IMO the adaptive function works really well (damping in normal mode becoming sportier/stiffer if you really push the car through twisties) - same experience like Percymon.
GT3 has a different PASM set-up for sure.
As for the reported PASM failures: I don't know how many cars are affected, but it seems to be a rather rare problem (judging from discussions with other PASM-car owners and from the quite rare cases reported on Rennteam).
Just have a spin in a 987 S with PASM and you'll know whether you like it

Sorry, my comment wasn't directed at Rennteamers!
I only used to activate sport mode to futilely try to get some body control back, just to see if it made any difference.

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

    no offence taken

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

I did try PASM, and it feels like driving a Golf
However, I like the idea of being not getting your behind beaten up by a hard suspension, unless u really want to ride the car hard.
Hence PASM seems like a good option for me.

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

    Hi wtsnet,

Can you get in touch with me at caymans@hotmail.co.uk with regard to your PASM issue? My OPC would like to compare our cases and then feedback to Porsche. They have asked me for your details (if you're prepared to give them to me).

    Thanks very much,
    Richard.

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

Just so's you know, I just had my right-rear PASM shock replaced at 20,000 miles. I had already booked my 20,000-mile service and then the next day after booking I noticed some clunking sounds from the rear. They diagnosed it and fixed it within a week under warranty.

But kind of a bummer to see that I'm having problems with PASM so early. I hope it doesn't indicate bad things...

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

Interesting. I've had clunking/rattling from the back for longer than I can remember, but replacing the rear shocks didn't change that - I guess mine is something else!

Did you notice any handling difference? Wbat was 'broken' about the shock? What was the specific cause of the noise?

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

The seal was leaking fluid. They pulled off the shock and felt excessive side-side play in the shaft when compared to a new PASM shock. So they replaced it.

All is good now. The handling had seemed a little bit odd in turns--like the car would feel a bit floaty and unpredictable, but honestly after the sound started I wasn't driving the car very hard so I can't give any real assessment.

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

Floaty and unpredictable sounds very familiar!
When did you get this done eslai, and how many miles have you done since? Let us know if they 'floatyness' comes back within 150-200 miles...

My rear shocks were changed for the same reason, however the symptoms returned soon.

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

It was done during my 20,000 mile service at around 20,400. The problem wasn't really something that was noticeable--it wasn't a drastic change in handling, so I can't say how long the shock was "on the way out". I literally started hearing the clunking sound three days before I took the car in for service, so not a lot of time to think about it before it was resolved.

Car still feels tight right now, about 200 miles later, but now I have a slow leak in my driver-side front tire. ARGH!@ So I'll let you know if anything adverse starts happening again but for now, all is good.

Re: MY 2007 = PASM still problematic?

Good to hear Eslai, thanks for the info. But a pain about the tyre!
