Good time buy 996tt used? or is value still dropping?

Is it a good time to buy a 996tt or is price still dropping?
Which year is the best to buy 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005?
How much is a good amount to spend?
Hows this for cars with 10k miles?
2002: 70k
2003: 77k
2004: 87k
Should we go for a 2004 with 3k miles and X-50 for 90k. Is that good deal
Were looking for a deal that wont' lose us too much money over the next few years. Is it much better to go for an older model then?

Now is an excellent time to buy a 996 Turbo!

I think the best value may be an X50, you essentially get the package almost free!

True, i am on the market for a used 997 and the Porsche dealer tried to steer me towards a TT X50 in excellent condition for which they were ready to drop the price immediately and well below the first used 997 prices...Makes you wonder really...

i spent sometime looking. i'd definitely hold out for an x50 car. warranty time remaining was also an important factor for me. the 2004 with 3k @ 87k sounds pretty good assuming you like the color, records etc. good luck, your car is out there.

Am also swinging between a new 997CS, a 996TT x50 or even a Turbo S. The 997 is so much better looking in and out, but 355hp and the specter of possible RMS issues are not getting me too excited.
What is the reputation of the ceramic brakes on the Turbo S ? A reason to jump in or to run away due to horrid maintenance costs ?

you'd be supprised how easy it is to service a porsche, given that fact that there are many porsche workshop manuals about, doing the servicing yourself will keep more money in your wallet!

I have always done my own oil changes on my cars, and it use to take me all of 30 mins to do it thats on a vw, but obviously porsches have both a sump and oil filter and are roughly the same principle to change...

my local vw dealer charges Pounds90 for just an oil change

daylight robbery isnt in it..

buy a porsche when you want, and enjoy it...

Value will always drop, it is just a matter of pace ...

this being said, I suspect, 996 TT will now depreciate very close to a "straight line" .... because the 997 TT is now out.

I'm interested too in buying a 996TT and i'm also worried regarding price drop. Here in Europe the price of a very few mileage one is still pretty high so i don't know if it's better to consider a 2002 with 60K miles or a 2003 with 5K on. I fear that in a year they can reach easily the same price.....

And if you wait 10 more years they even might stabilize the price like the 993 Turbo but meanwhile you'll losing money on the cars you are driving until then and worse than that you won't be driving a dream.

Bottomline is FORGET about it! The Turbo's value has dropped 50% of its new price whatelse do you want???

I was asking for an advice only on which model year to choose. I do not want to lose thousands of euros just because i pick the wrong one.

Fair enough! I apologise but I sick of all the "how much lower will they go" kind of crap.

Your answer is that rule of thumb is "Always buy the most recent you can comfortably afford" although the Turbo's the only chang was in 2002 and very minor. Forget the X50 if you have to pay a premium for it.

In this situation the best way ensure that the car will not depreciate much is to get an older model. If you don't care for a warranty then go for an 02 with reasonably low mileage. I would go for the X50 if you can swing it. You would save the most money that way. If warranty is an issue than get the newest one you can afford and add the extended warranty. In a few years once all the model years go out of warranty there would be a marginal difference in price for each year. People say that once a car looses 60% of it's value, the depreciate rate would be very stable. By this winter the car will have taken have already taken it's biggest hit because the 997TT's are becoming more and more available. The problem that I am hearing on the 996TT's is 2nd gear popping out. This means you have to pay about 10k for a new transmission. I've heard of this problem on very low milaege 03's so it's not mileage or year dependent.

I was considering a '03 with very low mileage....hummmm can it be affected by that problem? I test drove it and it was ok but i've not driven it too long and expecially tested very well on this behalf....

Hummm

I think the guy who had the problem had only 11k miles on the car. When the people have problem the dealers are not able to replicate the problem, it seems to be a random occurance. For those under warranty it does seem to cover this problem.

I was in the same situation recently and my decision was made easy post driving the TT.

I bought a Manual 2005 996 TT, with 2,000 KM's, Black on Black and a full house which I purchased for $230,000 AUD which is a similar price for a 997S New. ($235,000 AUD) No options.

The way I saw it. Not only was I getting a $340,000 AUD car which was only 12 months old and has 2,000 kms, therefore brand new. I was also purchasing a car that someone else had taken a hit on.

Not to mention that my car absolutely smashes a 997S for performance and it is also 4WD which I have really enjoyed in the Wet compared to ny previous 911's.

Go for the newest one possible and extend the warranty if you can to give you peace of mind.

You were really lucky to find a car like that. I love the black on black combination. It looks great! but i cannot afford right now a 2005. Here (switzerland) they are far too expensive

Why a 2005 in particular? the TT did not change (very minor changes, and not related to engine, look, chassis etc) since it was introduced.

The newer, the better (apart from the fact that the 2005 version in here was only Turbo S).
I'm still fighting with the dealer to get a nice price.

I would say it's a good time. I just bought an "certified" Arctic Silver '03 996TT with only 7K miles on it for 86K. It is absolutely perfect with no rock chips or any other damage. I traded my '05 Carrera S for it. Should have bought a turbo all along, you just can't beat the boost and potential hp mods available for the turbo.

I've just started looking at 996TT - as someone already said it's a given that they will lose money, just a question of at what rate they will lose money in the near future.

My local OPC seemed a little too eager to push me towards the 996TT - not that I needed much pushing:) - he had more TT than non-TT 911 in the showroom. He kept telling me how the 997 Turbo was very hard to get hold of at the moment so the 996 was a great buy. But surely as the 997 starts to become available on the secondary market the 996TT will become even more of a bargain. The wide spread of prices in trade ads seems to hint at uncertainty at what the correct level for the car is at the moment.

I'm gonna watch and wait until spring - but I have a cast iron record of getting this kind of thing wrong

A black/black manual would be great and surely a better buy than just about any 997 for the next couple of years ?

Have you driven both a 996TT and 997S? I think the 996TT is only fun once you are doing illegal speeds, and below 70 is quite boring to drive, especially in comparison to the 997s... which I belive is almost as fast up to 60 anyway.

I suggest driving both before opting for the 996TT, which though looks fantastic in black/black, may not be as rewarding a drive - especially on our UK roads.

Just my opinion of course!

Not yet - I am trying to find somewhere to hire a 996TT for a week in the new year tho' (any suggestions gladly recieved - all hire companies in southern UK seem to have upgraded to 997TT).

I certainly take your point - I do have concerns that the 996TT might be less involving that a 997S but in terms of depreciation it shoud be a little more solid having shed most of it's value already. It's the only 996 model I would buy (cooking 996 don't ring my bell and GT3 would be too harsh for carrying a young child). A 997S with aero kit would probably be perfect and I will drive one before spending cash, have taken a bath on new/nearly new cars recently and would like to try and limit my exposure at least a little bit this time

The TT is not going to be boring in normal driving is it ? I thought it would basically handle like a C4S until you engaged warp speed.
