    Waiter again.....

Well, I've taken the plunge and my local Porsche dealer have a large cheque in their grubby little hands for my deposit for a 997 Turbo!

This is a big step for me - I've had two Boxster S's over the past few years, and had been on the waiting list for the Vantage V8 but having finally got to drive one I just knew it wasn't for me. Over the past few days I've had soem time in an XK (with an eye to ordering an XKR), a Gallardo (could get an 18-24 month old one for Turbo money) and a 997 Turbo.

    My thoughts...

Jag, great car, fantastic GT, but I'm doing few miles now and mainly x-country down twisty lanes - and the car is a bit large to place in these situations

Gallardo - WOW! The power, the noise... but, it'd be coming out of warranty, the attention may be a little too much (got eyeballed by 3 police cars on the test drive!) and whlst I can afford the car, the running costs may make my eyes water.

The 997, like putting on a comfortable pair of slippers... that had been made over by NASA!! Could pootle around when you want, but when you didn't.. well seemed to redefine speed!

So, Pounds10k to Porsche Bournemouth for a Dec 07 build. Yes, you read that right... Pounds10,000 deposit for a years wait, it's mad.. but I get a driving day.. yippee!

Reading offered me an earlier slot in Aug/Sept but I've dealt with Bournemouth for so long they're like family - and they think there's a good case for getting an earlier slot for mid '07. Works for me, don't want the car too soon, just moved house still reeling from that!!!

Only slight fly in the ointment... that damn R8, liking the looks and performance on paper. My local dealer has offered me his #2 car so I've given him a deposit ( a LOT smaller than Porsches and fully refundable) as a placeholder. I can't get to Paris but might try Geneva in the new year - but can I risk that sort of cash on a car I've never driven...?

Ah, it's tough Now, if I get the turbo..... Cobalt.. or Carrera White... or Meteor... or thast pic of Baltic looked nice on the board the other day... normal service has been resumed!!!!!

    Re: Waiter again.....

    Nice note. Thanks

    about that R8

it could be a legitimate competitor to the 911, BUT..
having owned an RS6, S4 and tt3.2DSG - haven't ever driven an Audi comes anywhere near having Porsche drivng dynamics. The new RS4 is better, but I'd have to be convinced that Audi has figured out an integrated awd, steering, handling and braking system that can be compared to a 911's.

Although the R8 is nice looking, there's alot of technoglitz on it - the contrasting color "body blade", the engine under glass, LED's that light up the engine bay at night, etc. I will see one live in NYC on October 11 and see if my impressions are the same.

    Re: Waiter again.....

It seems there is no uniformity with the amount of deposit each dealer requests. In Austin its 1k now and 9k with ordered. No dealer around me had one to test drive either. Difficult to purchase a 130K car without even driving one. And yet my dealer has my deposit. Psych consult ordered. Congrats.

    Re: Waiter again.....

Don't worry, you don't need a psych consult. I'll tell you for free. You're nuts. But so am I. I ordered a 997 Turbo without the benefit of seeing one in person, let alone drive it. I drove a few 997s to get the layout of the interior and overall general driving dynamics, and I'm just trusting that the car will be what I expect. Picking it up tomorrow, so I'll find out soon.

    just want to alert you

the sound of the engine and the exhaust gets quite a bit better as the miles go by - with 3300 miles on mine, it's fine unless you want loud

I didn't have much other than some magazines and the knowledge base obtained here to go by in settling in on my options...when I ordered in March. I haven't regreted the purchase sight unseen once..what a car I hope tomorrow is a great day for you...the day I got mine was for me(blue skies and dry pavement)

    Re: Waiter again.....

Standard deposit wanted by UK OPC's is Pounds10k AND they wont credit you with any interest for the 12 months its sitting in their account. Nice little earner,eh.
By 'Driving Day' do you mean a day on the Porsche Experience course? If so, thats built in to UK price just like electric sunroof!

    Re: Waiter again.....

The bunny seems to jump a bit faster compared to your Boxster days
Pure coincidence that I had dinner with Dreamcar & SWMBO tonight (stop-over after they picked up their stunning cobalt 987S in Zuffenhausen yesterday) and while he mentioned the UK Rennteamers he met before he was questioning himself: hhmmm what car might be Rich C's next one Now we know
Don't miss to say hello to your former Boxster colleagues on the Boxster Board now and then
And now...open a bottle of the finest red wine and enjoy sweet Turbo-dreams

I will be in NYC at that time. Where will you get to see it?
