installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

2006 C2S. Did the job myself. Took about 10 hours, but took my time. Could be done in 6-7 hours. the directions are 16 pages long and are straightfoward. Wasn't that impressed with the PSE until i did the electric switch disconnect which I installed in the ashtray. WOW what a difference. Sounds fantastic throughout the entire rpm range.Installing the cutoff switch was no big deal. If you have PSE and do not have a cutoff, I highly recommend it.

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

    How much was the PSE?

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

Could post a dumbo's DIY guide to installing the cutoff switch please?
The emphasis on "dumbo" is primarily for my benefit ;-)
    Many thanks.

Another dumbo here supporting the request.

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

    To all "dumbo's" Lol
Go to the CUTOFF FIX FOR THE PSE thread (on pg.2)
I don't feel like repeating it again , but basically, you find the wire (behind the rear seat ) going to the PSE solenoid valve and splice a switch into it.

Btw: a friend made a mold for the switch insert into the ashtray .
It is a plastic cast ,is a perfect fit into the ashtray and can be easily removed .
I'll be happy to make a casting (including the switch)
If anyone is interested , send me an E-mail and I'll send you a photo.

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

Let me see if I have this right. If I select my "Sport" button (which clears the throat of my PSE cab and revises the acceleration mapping) can this rewiring allow me to keep the remapping but quiet the exhaust?

There are times that I like the sound but not always,--but I always want the aggressive mapping!

My requirements exactly Dan! Basically I want the maximum amount of configurations possible! :

    Sport WITH PSE
    Sport WITHOUT PSE
    PSE ON WITHOUT Sport

I think thats the main combo's... i may have got my knickers in a twist though!

    It can be done .
The way the PSE works is as follows:
    1. Both mufflers have bypass pipes with a vac. operated damper in each.
    2. When the dampers are closed, the exhaust goes thru the entire muffler , when open, the exhaust exits from the first chamber ( the mufflers have three chambers in them . You should also get more power in bypass mode although Porsche does not make any claims )
    3. The exh. pipe dampers are NORMALLY OPEN and only close when the vacuum line is opened. An electrically activated solenoid valve , controlled by the Sport Chrono or it's own switch (the one with the dual exh. pipe symbol on it )
either opens or closes the vacuum pipe to the dampers.
    4. The solenoid valve is NORMALLY CLOSED. That means, if you disconnect the electric plug to it (that's the brown/orange plug in the engine compartment) it closes and does not allow the vacuum to close the exhaust dampers.
( this is the easy mod. if you just want the PSE on all the time )

If you DO NOT have the Sport Chrono, all you need do is install an on-off switch interrupting the 12V to the solenoid valve.
    a) Switch open = no 12 V to solenoid, PSE on loud
(Irrespective of factory switch position )
    b. Switch closed = PSE works exactly per factory switch .

If you DO have the CHRONO, you can do the same as above , but you will NOT be able to go to QUIET with Chrono ON( because QUIET requires a 12 V signal to close the solenoid )
If you want ALL options, you need to install a DPDT switch and connect an alternate 12V power source to it in order to be able to close the solenoid i.e. PSE quiet(You can just tap into the cigarette lighter 12V wire near the ashtray, or wherever you chose to locate the switch )

    Have fun.

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

Sorry, made a mistake above ( I do not have Sport Chrono)

If you want ALL options with the Sport Chrono, you will need an ON-OFF-ON switch , not a DPDT as stated above.

    ( Pos.1 ) ON = PSE will work exactly per factory .

( OFF ) = PSE will ALWAYS be LOUD, regardless of Sport Chrono settings( interrupts power to solenoid valve )

(Pos.2 ) ON = PSE will ALWAYS be QUIET ( alt. 12V power closes valve)

Please keep in mind that I do not have Sport Chrono in my car so I can't test the above .So do the install at your own discretion. You may find an easier way , using a relay .
I have no way of determining what happens in the car's computer circuit . It's one thing to interrupt the power supply to the solenoid and another when introducing voltage from another source.
To be safe, I would keep the two power sources completely independent . That way you can be sure that nothing can adversely affect the cars computer circuits.

(I have the PSE switch , installed the disconnect switch and everything works great).

jcs: Thanks for the write up. I have read other threads regarding this topic however yours seems to be a concise synopsis.

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

On the switch-over valve is you will attach a wire harness with a plug that has a long 2 wire lead. this lead goes to the DME behind the bose speaker sub woofer. One wire is Grey/Green, the other is Red/Blue. Cut the grey/green wire near the dme giving yourself enough room to work. Get a 2 pole toggle switch or equavelent and soldier a wire to each pole. A good place to install the switch is in the ashtray. It is very easy to run the wires under the center console to the dme. You can hide it completely without removinig any other pieces. Now solder each wire to the wire that was cut. You are completing the circuit by going through the switch. With the switch off, you are disabling the circuit and causing the sporty sound through the entire rev range. if the switch is on, completing the circuit, you will have your standard setup, ie the sport switch under the psm screen controls the exhaust. Keep in mind that my car is a 2006 and has sport chrono pkg.

I think you need to add a second switch to get this if you have PSE and Sport Chrono. Someone posted a while back how they did this and put the second switch in the ash tray.

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

Is there a way to make "Sport" the default selection when starting the car??? I always want the aggressive ECU mapping and the PSE and would only ocassionally turn it off. It would be nice to have it on as default, just like in the 996 with PSE. I had a 2004 996 C4S with PSE and it was always on, unless I deactivated it. In my 2006 997S it is always off, unless you turn it on which, for me , is everytime I use the car. Again, does anyone know a way to program the system for "Sport" on as default? Can it be accessed through the Sport Chrono option, as some other functions can? Any help would be welcome. Thanks!

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

I've read on different forums. One person cut the red/blue wire (positive), while you cut the light/green wire (negative)

Does it matter which wire I splice?

    thanks

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

This is how I did it , with cut off switch ( check my previous post)

It does not matter which wire you cut.
I cut the power wire myself ( red/blue ) and installed the switch in the ashtray .

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

Thanks! my car went under major surgery yesterday, today and won't be finished until thursday.

This was my dealer's first install of PSE, so they didn't realize how extensive it was to have the factory on/off switch for my non sports chrono 911s install! Yikes, I hope everything comes out fine.

He told me they had to rip my car apart to install that stupid switch. here's keeping my fingers crossed, everything will be alright, and without and squeeks

Re: installed PSE myself with cutoff switch-comments

I don't have a switch but I do have a hack in place (thread-link). For the first time in a fair few months I took the hack off this afternoon and went for a spin.

The PSE exhaust in standard-quiet mode sounded a bit 'throaty' to start off but that soon cleared. Obviously having the PSE values in one fixed position for a while must have clogged then up a little! After I got going though I could not believe just how quiet the standard-quiet setting is - the car sounded like an electric milk float under about 5500rpm (when the resonator kicked in). After a while I then thought I'd put 'sport' mode on to see the contrast. Once again I could not believe how quiet that was too compared to my typical setup of PSE always on with the hack.

The hack I would say gives you about an extra 30% more noise than loud PSE in stock format!!

Needless to say that as soon as I got home, I put the hack back. And there it will stay for another 6 months!
