    C4S in the rain...severe rain!

For the first time had to go out in my C4S in a severe thunderstorm... I was a bit aprehensive at first but I was amazed at the grip and overall handling in the wet. Just superb and like on rails. No aquaplaning, just rock solid.

For those of you who aren't C4S fans... take one out in the rain!

Only thing is, got back home and gave it the full Zymol treatment... wash, pre-wax, concours... Phew! 4 hours and wiped out. Tomorrow wax the wheels, clean tips, full inteior and leather treatment. Then maybe some pics.

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

Do you not drive your car in the rain?

Have had the car only 6 weeks and I've been away for most of them so no time to drive the car as much. Today was rainy for the first time, so went for it. Loved it.

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

You should drive it in the snow!!! Now, I am not talking off road, the car is too low to the ground, but I am talking 2 AM really dumped with snow and nobody has plowed the road. Yes, I do have winter tires on the C4S in the winter. I think the C2 handled good in the snow, because I had one...& it also was good. However, the C4S gripped so much better. That brings up an important point that I have made many times, but it is still a critical point. I had a Cayenne with the summer tires that they put on when first released. With summer tires in the winter the "SUV Porsche" was DEADLY, but in defense of Porsche, so would any SUV be without all weather tires. Tires need to be realistically picked for the car and the road conditions.

Enjoy your car, drive it in any weather... it was designed for that. Ah... and it's OK if it gets dirty and stays like that for a while. It is a car, the streets have dirt... it is not a fragile painting to hang on the wall!

    You bet!

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

thanks for the post haku. how fast did you get going? how much rain? torrential showers rain? what kind of tires do you have and how are they in the dry? would love details. thank you very much.

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

As Stork says, the tires are everything! I maintain a couple of sets of tires for most of my cars. One set is for most dry conditions, and the other are true snow tires,--not that mud and snow compromise stuff. True snow tires (not studded mind you) are terrific on these cars.

It was in constant and VERY heavy rain together with the occaisional 5 to 10 minutes of torrential squall. The speeds during the heavy rain would vary between 40-80 with really no feeling of grip being compromised.

The limiting factor was visibility. I can only compare the C4S's amazing handling in the wet to my Audi TT (in the UK and now gone) which I thought was good.

The tires are Michelin PS2's 235/35 ZR 19 front, 305/30 ZR 19 rear. Not overly noisy. Others who have tried alternative tires would be in a better position to compare but I'm more than happy with their overall performance.

Dan, makes sense to me. What brand/spec of snow tires do you use on the P car?

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

thanks! that's incredible and anecdotes like yours sway me to getting a 4s.
appreciate it. happy and safe driving.

    ps
did the tires come with the car or did you go out and get them?

The tires came with the car - the 305's I believe are standard spec for the C4S. The wheels I chose are the XRR's.

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

Yes to winter driving----I have winter performance ice-snow tires (LM22) 0n the 997 C2 and my old ('96)and revered NSX.

But on a really icey road-----attention! Cars with engines mid/back like to slide tail first.....

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

Haku,--I will have to get back to you on that! (my choice of snows for the C2S). I only just got this car and have not chosen the snow tires for it. (I did use them on my past Porsches and other cars).

I do recommend a review of Christophorus,--the factory magazine. They usually run an article on snow tires, tire chains, etc, at this time of year. With the new 997 models they need to be revisiting this issue. I suspect they are going to suggest the 18 in wheels with snows for all models of the 997 (providing better fender clearance).

Re: C4S in the rain...severe rain!

My C2S in the rain is very scary. More than once I have felt my front hydro-plane when there is too much water on the road. Maybe it is the tires, PS2's, maybe it is the car itself, but the Porsche stays in the garage when there is heavy rain or when the roads are cold.

In light rain the car is fine. I have probably done two or three thousand km's in the rain where it felt fine. But once the water starts to accumulate, the cars is anything but a joy to drive.

For me the C4S in the rain was a pleasure to drive, no stress and no worries about aquaplaning. It felt firmly planted to the road even when hitting fairy deep puddles at speed on the highway. I loved it. For a split second I could feel the car's PSM do something but it never felt unnatural or scary. I also think that the slightly extra weight up front on the C4S helps.
