    Latest serious 997 infos

Just got a call from an insider from Porsche France (please note, not my dealer! so although we can never be 100% sure, I trust my source, I want to anyway )
He asked me not to repeat, and it's fine, I'm not repeating, I'm just passing on the info tough if he finds out.
1- Presentation of the 997 in Paris
2- Two Versions: Narrow and wide body
3- 350 hp and 380 hp respectively (plus or minus 2 or 3 bhp)
5- 3.8 L flat 6, which means about 100 bhp/L for the wide body, sweet...
4- Carrera 4 and cab versions to come later (at least a year) in both bodies
6- He didn't know if you could get the narrow version with 380 hp but suspects not.
7- the 380 hp is NOT derived from the GT1 flat 6, as is the GT3 and Turbo.
8- 997 Turbo power figure will most probably start with a 5! (If not, the powerkit definitly will)
9- Very substantial rise in price, expecially the 380 hp version , also due to the Boxster coupe, which will be amini 911 in itself.
10- didn't know about the F1 gearbox, sorry
11- First official pictures published on the 7th of June!!!
This is all very positive news to me.
    Voila!

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    highly interesting, thanks fanch!!

i appreciate that according to your info the 997 will get 350 + 380 HP -- but having the current 4S and GT3 prices in mind that probably means that the 380 HP widebody 997 will be priced near to the 996 TT... i expect the S version to be around EUR 110,000 - 120,000 minimum.

anyway, now i'm really looking forward to the 997!!! and i'm still hoping that the look won't be too oldschool...

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

Thanks fanch and thanks for passing on the info.

Is there a special occasion on June 7th regarding the official pictures ?

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Fanch,

any info on GT2/3? do you expect a 997 version of either and if so when? thanx

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Watt,
Sorry, nothing on the GT3/GT2, the conversation was short.
    Ron,
Nothing special on the 7th of June, that's the date he gave me, that's all. It's a monday I think.
I'm still hoping to see it earlier though

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

Merci Fanch .... this is really good info... and very useful... For sure you didn't say anything we just read it ....

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Thanks Fanch for the info

I hope the fact thats the engine doesn't come from the GT1 (GT3 & TT's) doesn't mean its the current carrera engine

But do you really think Porsche would invest in R&D to come up with a new engine for the 997?

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

No...i'd bet this is the M96 block, complete with continued RMS issues just puffed up to 3.8l.

I'd be there in a heartbeat for a 3.8 GT1 based engine in a 997 with rear seats...

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Great info, François! Thanks!
380 hp sure sounds nice, but I wonder how the weight will evolve...

    Greetings,
    --Pierre

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

I think it will be an evolution of the current 3.6L.
But what's wrong with it? It's one of the best 6 cylindres in the world don't you think?

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Fanch,
Thank you very much for the new updates. Is there any possiblity of calling your source back for information on whether or not an 05 996 GT 2 will be offered in the states? Or 997 GT 2 or GT 3 information?

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

I'm not sure he'd like to be honest.
He's a french guy working in Boulogne for Porsche France, met him on my visit organised by my dealer to Zuffenhausen over a year ago.
The problem is every time I try and get something out of him, he tells me that I shouldn't call him, end of discussion.
I guess he was particularly nice today.
He's the one who told me over two years ago that the Cayenne would NOT have a central rev counter, small detail, but true.
He knows, he's already seen the 997 on many many occasions. Bastard!!!

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

7th of june??? YAY! A day after my birthday!!!!

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

Why not use the current GT3 engine for the 380 hp versions? I'd rather have that than the M96 engine.

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

Why not use the GT1 block? Primarily, the cost differential -somewhere between $20 & 30k....

...which I would consider a steep but worthwhile entry free

I think we all would. I don't know how the M96 motor would fare in racing conditions. I like my Porsches with engines proven at Le Mans, it doesn't matter to me whether it is in the GT class or prototype.

I certainly hope the weight isn't increased, not by one kilo. I'm not the type of driver who needs navigation systems or sound deadening, but since the current 996 has these types of things, what needs to added in the 997? I realize larger engines, wheels, and brakes add to the weight, but don't they have better materials and smarter ways to use them than before? Shouldn't the goal be to have the car be lighter than the previous version, instead of saying: "oh ten kilograms more isn't much more," with every new generation?

I keep hearing that Porsche is very profitable. Doesn't this mean to some extent that the profit margins on their cars is too high? I want Porsche to be profitable and I want it to remain an independent company even if it means doing things that we enthusiasts might not like (as long as they keep making pure GT models). However, I don't think a 997 widebody with 380hp should cost more than 100k. I think that the turbos were a good deal at their price, but the NA cars shouldn't be priced so high, especially if they are just 2 wheel drive.

There are some people that can afford to buy a new GT3 every 4 years and I think that is wonderful. I'd love to be able to do that. However, I probably won't be able to, although I think I could save enough to buy one and enjoy it for twenty years. The point is that Porsches, in my opinion, are not limited to the super rich like Ferrari. A hundred thousand US dollars is a lot of money, but it is possible for someone with an average salary to buy one new if they are a hard core fan and make a few sacrifices. I wouldn't mind spending 1-2 years worth of my salary for my Porsche passion and I hope Porsche continues to price their cars so that owning a new one remains an impractical possibility for the average man instead of an impossibility. This is one of the reasons that I'm working hard in college on a degree in physics and engineering so hopefully I'll make slightly more than the average man.

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Great news Fanch..thanks!

    Ciao
    Dario

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

The only reason I can think of is cost, which would be a valid one really.
A GT3 block is much more expensive than a 996 Carrera Block.
We'll know very soon now anyway.
It'll definitly be heavier as well, so is the trend... Hence the big increase in power IMHO.

You make a very good point and I believe Porsche will continue to offer sportscars at an impractical but still atainable price. The US may see more of a price increase to catch up with the rising Euro. The company is aware of the traditional values of it's customers and it won't go far from the successful 911 formula, including pricing.

The M96 motor will continue to evolve and improve and it will be the practical choice for the entry 911. I think they will solve the rear main seal issue which seems to be a problem with an occasional out of round casting. This is a quality control issue rather than a defective design issue. The GT1 based motor is just too expensive to offer at a reasonable price.

    Great information Fanch!

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

I would also love to see the GT3 engine in the new carreara but the problem is, it costs much more than the M96 and is 70kg heavier than the M96 engine.

    cheers,

    W.

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

Happily swap out 70 kg..of sound deadening...electric chairs..etc..to have that engine.

I would think cost. The GT3 engine is $40,000 US...

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

Since the "S" models will cost relatively more than the narrow body ones, may be they are using the GT3 altered engine. The "S" models are rumored to have 380 hp.

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

I feel pretty confident that the GT1 based motors will be saved for the TT/GT2/GT3 variants again.

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Me too, I agree.

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

It's real hard to cost compare the M96 and the GT3 engine. A GT3 engine has a lot of expensive parts, titanium rods for example, that could easily be replaced with more "mainstream " components. If they did this and mass produced it like the M96 engine I guarantee it would cost a lot less. But why PAG would want to do this when they sell the crap out of the M96 engines?

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

    Does anyone know the following:

    Block the 993 NA uses
    Block the 993 Turbo uses
    Block the 996 Turbo uses
    Block the 996 GT3 uses.

    Re: Latest serious 997 infos

I was under the impression that they're all virtually identical. I think they all have a 964 part number (although the GT3 just changed to a 996 number this year - Spanish production)

    "Does anyone know the following:

    Block the 993 NA uses
    Block the 993 Turbo uses
    Block the 996 Turbo uses
