    test drive 997 turbo

Drove the 997 turbo recently. I found the car to be very easy to drive and the acceleration is incredible. I must admit however that in the UK I just can't justify the fact that it is my car (2 year old 997S) plus Pounds45k!! I could keep my 997 and buy a brand new Boxster for the missus!

The interior is exactly the same as my car and I'm not sure how long I would keep my licence in the turbo.

I think I am going to cancel my order and get my Pounds10k deposit back. I would rather spend Pounds125k on new gallardo or a F430 than spend Pounds103k on the 997 turbo. I am sure the turbo would be a great car on the autobahn - incredibly fast, totally reliable, smooth, quiet, etc but in the UK in twisty roads with congestion and speed cameras everywhere I just can't see Pounds45k of difference between my 997 and the turbo.

I have never driven either but I would rather the sense of occassion, looks and noise of a gallardo or F430. I hope to get a test drive soon and hopefully get one or the other next year.

    Anybody else feel the same?

I think you are 100% right.

The TT needs the right roads to unveil its full potential. The F430 (I have no personal experience with the Gallardo) can be enjoyed very much also at lower speeds. You should definitively test one

    Re: test drive 997 turbo

I passed on the turbo- was to replace my 997S and got an M5 instead. I know, apples and oranges and the turbo is an incredible car, just not enough for me justify the difference in price.

    Re: test drive 997 turbo

I have to say I feel exactly the oppsoite. Where I live the Turbo will be great - twisty country lanes, very few cameras and its so discreet. While I think the Gallardo and F430 are impressive machines they're far too flashy for everyday driving.

I'm really looking forward to the Turbo and for me its the right choice.

I couldn't agree with you more!

Surely it depends, for which purpose you want the car. If you gonna drive it daily or occasionally, how many other cars you have, if you want to go stealth or like attention etc.

But basically you are absolutely right. Drive one (or both) of the Italians and you will be confirmed in you opinion even more.

I have to agree, while the 997TT is an awsome car unless you sit inside the car and punch it, it still feels as if you are in the 997S. If you have money to burn sure go for it but otherwise as you said you can have two cars in your garage. I had the Previous Turbo model and I loved it as there was a significant in differences in looks and performance. I love the new 997TT but can not justify an additional $50K-$60K. For those lucky people that have the extra to spend, I am very happy for you and wish you happy and safe driving always

    Re: test drive 997 turbo

The shared interiors of the Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman and Cayman S are a joke. Similarly, 997 C2S is so similar to 997TT.Porsche mustn't just focus on parts sharing and cost cutting. They need to give each car more individual character INSIDE so that people feel they are getting something more for the extra money they put into buying a higher model.

I completely agree. If I didn't first buy my 997S, I would have no problem going directly to the 997TT. I just don't see spending the extra $70K (including $30K depreciation on my 997S) in cash to move to the 997TT for what is essentially an extra 125 HP and 400 lbs of weight, with an exhaust sound that can't come anywhere near the sound of my PSE. In addition, the interior of the 997TT is almost exactly the same as my 997S.

    Re: test drive 997 turbo

Alan, unless you have a derestricted highway in your back yard, I don't think the 997TT makes much sense for ANYONE in the US...

Couldn't have said it better myself... I want more for my money whether it's burning a hole in my pocket or not.

I disagree, the 997TT happens to be the fastest stoplight to stoplight drag race cars available due to it's ferocious traction off the line.

This is one of my main points for wanting to get this car.

    Re: test drive 997 turbo

Totally agree. My 997S is nearly two years old now and I love it. Where to go next is a big deal as I cannot see anything coming close - the Turbo was the obvious one but if I got Pounds55k for my 997S I also could not justify the extra Pounds55k to just go a bit faster. I probably don't utilise the power enough of my 997S and have to say I never find myself wishing I had a bit more power.

So who's going to dominate today, power or traction. With my old E55, it was always the former but with AWD and an excellent chassis, traction has not let me down and I can explore the mad acceleration.

I truly find the car very enjoyable in North America.

Me too...lets face it, a basic 911 travels much faster than the speed public roads were designed and there are lots in North america...so why would they(997TT) be anymore impractical than lets say, any other sports car...lest we offend. I find this car a real blast...I can't believe how capable the awd system used in the Turbo. Great for Canadian roads

Yes, wherever there isn't any radar-if a tree falls in a forest and there is nobody there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Nevada tends to host an event annually where there's no speed limits between a stretch on certain highways. One of them is the Silver State Classic. I think there was another one where Richard Losee totalled his Enzo not too long ago.

    Re: test drive 997 turbo

Drag racing doesn't really matter to me as real enjoyment on straight roads doesn't begin until after 200 km/h. This is something I can't see myself doing in NA, without being thrown in jail. The C2S will probably stay with the 997TT just fine in the twisties, especially with the sport chassis, this is what I was referring to. However, if drag racing is your thing, go ahead, it will be great at that.
