HELP: New Valve Stems Needed When Installing New Tires??

Quick question please. I am changing my rear tires from Conti to Michelin Pilot Sport. Are the valve stems (I hope this is the right term?) supposed to be changed when you change tires? Thanks in advance.

Re: HELP: New Valve Stems Needed When Installing New Tires??

Supposed to? Yeah, it's kind of an unwritten rule kinda thing. But it's not an absolute thing, like changing the filter with your oil. It's more a preventative maintenance thing where it can't hurt to replace a .99 cent valve stem while you've got the tire dismounted. But keep in mind, that most tires get changed at 30K-50K miles.

So to answer your question... do it now, or just do it next time, it won't matter. You won't be springing a leak from a dry-rotted valve stem any time soon...

Re: HELP: New Valve Stems Needed When Installing New Tires??

Your tires will wear-out long before the stems....

Metal valve stems from Porsche can be reused (upto 3 times) but the rubber versions MUST be replaced. If you are running around with hollow-spoke wheels use only Porsche valve stems, they are a few mm shorter than regular valve stems (they cost the same).

MUST be replaced?? Why? Do they turn into pumpkins at midnight? It's just a valve stem, it lasts as long as it lasts, which on a 997, given the tires in question, should be at least a few sets of tires. But then again, they're so cheap, why not pop new ones in while you've got things broken down. But there's no "must" about any of it.

All fasteners (bolts, nuts, screw-in steel valve stems, etc.) can undergo a finite number of reuse cycles before they no longer function as designed. Porsche also recommends not reusing the steel valve stems if they are more than three years old. I don't know the exact reasoning behind the age requirements but one possibility could be corrosion worries (or maybe o-ring hardening)? The warning that rubber valve stems "MUST" not be reused comes from Porsche and every tire and wheel manufacturer and valve stem removal tool maker. And might have something to do with the rubber not resealing properly (internal nut deformation? bent stem?)
