    UK Tires Insurance

    Hi all,

    I was finalizing few things with my dealer the other day ahead of my end of the month delivery. I was surprised he told me Porsche doesn't do tire insurance.
    It seems many dealers of other brands offer this and with two flats the last 3 weeks, I am certainly glad I paid Pounds300 for 3 years for my BMW.
    Any of you guys know of a good company offering this for a Porsche before I ask my BMW dealer ?
    The 911s eat their tires so might explain Porsche reluctance in offering this direct, they might be scared to see a sharp increase of nails in tires around 8K miles on the rear wheels

    I purchased wheel and tire road hazard insurance from my Porsche dealer when I purchased my car in July. I believe it was $600 for 5 years. I am not sure who it is with or if they sell in the UK but I will check it out and post any info I can come up with when I get home.

    Porsche Notts offered this to me but never forwarded the insurance details at it was a new package they were offering.

    Give em a ring, and while your at it ask them where is the info they promised me!

    As above I took out the insurance from Notts at the end of last year. I made a claim in march and got a new rear tyre no problem!! I think it was Pounds200 mate.

    Sweet, I didnt know about this.

    I've already coughed up 320 quid for a rear tyre (which blew out from picking up a stanley blade in the road) so that's well worth it

    Thanks fellows. I will chase it up with my dealer and will speak to P Notts. Absolute no brainer, 1st tire incident and you are in the money. I think few insurance cos are offering it but easier to go through dealer as it saves you the paperwork for the claim

    I never heard of this, and I am the girl with the tires losing tread quickly in the back...LoooL, Oh yeah the nail incident in the rear almost killed the tire.

    Porsche offered me to buy a GPS system for the vehicle only at purchase

    I was quoted $750 for damage protection for both tires and wheels. Seems like a bad deal, and doesn't cover wear.

    Nottingham Porsche offered me the insurance and I declined it for two reasons.

    1. It is only for 1 tyre claim ie nearside rear can only be claimed for once. So you get a puncture and they replace tyre. If the same one goes again even if it is 1 mile later, your claim would be void.

    2. My tyres get ruined way before I get a puncture

    Finally why are so many UK forumites spelling 'Tyre' incorrectly?

    This is interesting. I picked up a puncture at the weekend (screw - maybe inserted intentionally) and was a bit concerned about the Pounds250 or so (Blackcircles fitted price), as I'm trying to get winter tyres for skiing this season.

    So I made sure I didn't use the gunk, but pumped up the tyre with the screw left in and took it (luckily a slowish puncture) to Speedway Autocare on Finchley road and they patched it within 30-40 mins.

    Cost? 20 quid including VAT. These guys do a good job.

    Have already done a quick sprint up to the 1st service station on the M1 to check everything out. Seems fine. Will let you know how it holds up (but I won't be doing anywhere near 200k's with a patch I can assure you!).

    Now wondering if I should take the tyre insurance. I have done just over 10k miles in just under a year (includes a couple of continental trips), the tyre still have a few mills on them (Pirelli Pzeros), so it mighhhht be worth it.

    Suggest no-one parks near a building site/skip/house renovation area - my guess is that the tyre rubber is quite sticky and picks up nails or screws which then work their way in?

    I was offered tyre insurance (Abraxas) by my OPC at a cost of Pounds250 (upto 5 claims over 2 years)if I remember correctly. This did not include rims and excluded cover outside of UK and the clause regarding wear and tear was ambiguous so I wasn't sure that the full cost of replacement would be met if the tyre had done a few thousand miles. I did some research which led me to conclude that an economic price (risk v cost) would be around Pounds50 I also expect to do quite a lot of miles on the other side of the Channel so I declined the offer.

    Interested to understand the data behind your estimate. My *complete* guesses are:

    * Cost of average tyre (incl fitting): Pounds220-250
    * Frequency of puncture: 20k miles (is this too little?)
    * Average mileage: 10k per year.

    So if you're paying Pounds250 for two years, you're roughly getting back your money - although I suppose it depends how many of these miles you do abroad of course. My only uncertainty is whether I've just been unlucky and in reality it's one puncture every 50k miles or so?

    What are the numbers that you used?
