    C&D boxster comparo

anyone see the recent Car and Driver comparison between the new pontiac solstice GXP and the 987? I was surprised to see that the 26k solstice was faster from 0-60 than the boxster. I knew the boxster had better handling and a more sophisticated suspension and figured it would handily beat the solstice on a track...but it didn't. Anyone find this a little strange? I mean a car costing roughly 20 thousand less and beating a porsche boxster around a track?

    Re: C&D boxster comparo

Well, first off, it's Car and Driver, so take it all with a grain of salt. Secondly, the Solstice GXP is no slouch, so I wouldn't be too surprised to hear that it can hang with a Boxster. I'll have to read the article though.

Get the S and call it a day

If all you want is a fun, hard-core car that is unbeatable round a track jusy buy a Lotus Elise / Exige. Me, I'd stick with a Boxster.

    Re: C&D boxster comparo

First, the GXP is going to sticker at around $29K. Then you have to figure some greedy dealers will add premiums onto that. Then you have to realize it's a Pontiac and built by GM, so the build quality isn't going to be anywhere near the Porsche. Then you have to go track both cars and see which one drives better at the end of the day. Then you have to decide which car you'd rather own now and over the long haul.

The comparison is apples and oranges here, IMHO.

I don't think any of us complain when the Boxster is rated equal to -- or superior to -- more expensive cars in certain aspects (like the brakes, for instance).

    My sentiments entirely.

What's that supposed to mean? I find C&D pretty good about these things. It's not like "Road and Track" (at least what they used to be) or "Motor Trend" (giving the Chevy Impala or some crazy car like that "Car of the Year" at one point - talk about advertizing dollars at work for GM).

Plain fact is, the Solstice GXP has more HP than the regular Boxster. On tracks that are hp dependent, the regular Boxster will get spanked. Even the M Roadster has gobs more power than the Boxster S - AND it's faster in the Nurburgring... But guess which car I bought?

Car and Driver or not, it is what it is... By the exact same reasoning, the Corvette Z06 spanks the regular 997 any given day of the week - at any track.

    Re: C&D boxster comparo

Well I guess if they used a 07 base Boxster with varioram plus at least it will be a draw.

Read the article on the track in no way the writer is suggesting the Solstice is a better car in anyway. The Boxster is balanced and telepathic at all times. But then get the S and forget about being overtaken by a Solstice GXP!

I didn't mean to say anything about a hard-core track only car; surely there are better suited cars for this job than a boxster or solstice (as you pointed out).

Its a GM Car - Never Forget That

    It is what it is.

I looked at the new Corvette. To be quite blunt the build quality is embarassing for a car costing as much as it does. The interior looked like it came out of a Cavalier. That is just my opinion.

These cars cater to 2 different groups of people. Same with the Corvette.

Well naturally a BMW owner would stick with C&D. I find that with C&D you can usually determine the winner of any of their comparos before you even read the article. Most of the mags are pretty bad this way, but C&D is by far the worst.
