    Considering flat black

I'm considering flat black (natural grey interior, ceramic brakes, manual). I'm obviously concerned about the work to keep it up. I am lucky enough to have a guy who works for me who can wash/wax once a week. Is that enough? Any advice? I like flat better than basalt (which always looks a little dirty to me - which is the point I guess) but haven't done a real A/B comparison. Any thoughts on Basalt w/ natural grey interior?

    Help! Thanks.

    Re: Considering flat black

    best of both worlds !!!
flat back and someone to clean it...great combo
you will be very happy, enjoy

    Re: Considering flat black

So given someone to clean it you agree flat black looks (much?) better than basalt?

    Thanks.

    Re: Considering flat black

    yes IMO,

But I have a flat black turbo.. go look at both side by side in person and it will be easy to see

Flat black is better, imo. Basalt looks rather a little brown/grey. My 4S is flat black and like y'll see, in spite of the bad and dirthy weather, this paint looks always ebony.

    Re: Considering flat black

I would go with flat black hands down. Basalt black is not as sexy and in the sun it looks like a dirty black car.

    Re: Considering flat black

    I'm rapidly getting convinced.

Now I'll take all cleaning recommendations!! Brands? Techniques? Thanks!

My dealer has suggested this option: Armor-glove (super-hard polyurethane film that protects vehicle's paint from stone chips).

    Re: Considering flat black

I ordered pure black for my new turbo , a first for me.
My 996 C4S is basalt, looks ok but nothing like pure black.
    I think you won't regret it. I hope I won't.

    Re: Considering flat black

Then again on the 997S I thought seal was hot too

Pure black does mean some extra care if you want luster and shine.

-Start by cleaning the car with lots of water and a good car shampoo after rinsing loose dirt off. Use 2 buckets , (one to rinse/clean wash mitt) so you always use clean water/soap.
-When car is new wax immediately.
-When you see scratches appear after some time you can use a paint cleaner to remove them. I use http://www.meguiars.com/?auto-paint-cleaners/Deep-Crystal-System-Paint-Cleaner but there are many good brands.
-After that you can polish your car to a deep shine if you want to.
-Finish by applying a new coat of wax for protection.

Sounds a lot but it isn't.

At some point in time you might feel the need to clay your car. Not really necessary if you keep on top of things.

    Armor Glove and "flat" black

I have a "pure" (rather than flat) black 997tt and had the Armor Glove installed by the group out of Cos Cob. They came to my house in NJ and did the process - took about 5 hours - looks great and has worked perfectly (only 2500 miles on the car). There is nothing that looks as good as a clean, well waxed "pure" black Porsche (especially if it's the 997tt)

As far as keeping it clean - I wash it when it needs it (pretty frequently) and wax it frequently with Menzerna Full Molecular Jacket - it is a polymer wax formulated in Germany for German paints. Goes on and comes off easier than anything I've ever used and makes the black really "pop"

BTW - I use Plexus plastic cleaner on the Armor Glove, as recommended by the installers

Here's a link to an older message. The car is Basalt, Natural Grey interior, with PCCB:

Why does everyone say "flat black"? Flat black is with no gloss. Do you really want a paint with no gloss? Its black . No flat or nothing, just black.

Now if I was going to get a new turbo, my choice would be black. Porsche black paint is actually easy to take care of. It will scratch from abuse (swirls..) but if you know how to properly wash and wax and maintain the car, it will look great and not scratch. Just get educated on proper paint care. I took my 997 which will two years old this Monday to Meguiar's Open night garage last month for paint surface evaluation. The verdict: the paint is in great shape, no need to do the extreme detail because there are no swirl marks at all.

Below is what abused Porsche paint looks like:

    Re: Considering flat black

And if you are going to show a black car, you always do it in sunlight which will always show the true paint defects on the surface:

    Re: Considering flat black

I will never call it flat black again. In fact, if I find anyone else calling it flat black, I promise to beat the crap out of them

    Re: Considering flat black

I was getting a bit confused as many years ago I DID see a flat black 930 at Zuffenhausen. Never wanted to find out how he kept that car clean. It was a matte/flat finish. No gloss. (I suspect if you paint them with RAM they will be even better against radar and laser).
