How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

Will the effective be much better to use a polisher to polish and wax the car then by hand?? Need help and comment from all of you.

Re: How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

Assuming that you have correct technique with both....You should get significantly better results in polishing the car (i.e removing swirls, scratches etc) using a machine polisher.....in regard to waxing I think the differences are a lot more marginal....it's not unusual to use a machine for polishing & applying sealant....waiting 24hrs and then applying a carnuba wax 'topper' by hand
Hope this helps....If you are looking for detailing advice, reviews, forums etc.....suggest you try www.autopia.org
BTW. If you have just a couple of lighter scratches etc. try a product like meguiars scratch X....this product uses the latest type of diminuative abrasives....basically as you keep rubbing the product into the paint, the abrasives break down lessening the 'polishing' effect. It significantly reduces the 'skill curve' and really brings light scratch removal into the realm of the weekend detailer.

Re: How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

Your hand is just an orbital buffer in really really really slow motion. So the difference in results is directly proportional to the amount of labor/time you put into the hand-polishing, versus what the machine can accomplish at a far more rapid pace.

So, if your question is a matter of results, factored along with TIME and (manual energy) invested, you can't beat the machine.

However, there are limits to what the machine can do. You can't get into tight areas, or sharply/deeply contoured areas with your average orbital. So you're always going to have to "finish it out" in many areas around the car by hand, after you've done the more expansive surfaces by machine. Also, I don't like taking the machine toward the edge of panels where I'd meet up with a molding, or matte surface, or gap, etc.etc..., potentially altering (permanently-glossing) the matte or flat original finish, as the aggressive polishing rate of the machine can be too aggressive for your belt-line moldings (at the base of side windows), your 1/4 window moldings, any badges and scripts, etc... Plus, they typically get wax and polish down into crevices and gaps and under moldings/weatherstrips, which sticks out like a sore thumb once everything dries, and is a bear to get cleaned out and cleaned up. That's counterproductive, saving time by using a machine, but using it sloppily such that you've got tons of time wasted in after-detail and cleanup.

So polishing or waxing your car is kinda like painting a room. Use the machine for the large and expansive areas, where it fits and where the pad makes even contact with the paint. Then, "jamb out" and "edge out" the rest of the car you missed with the machine by hand. Then buff off.

Thanks. Any good DA polisher, machine polish, and wax you recommand?

Re: How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

Porter Cable 7424 - It's THE most commonly used. I just bought one 2 days ago.

Re: How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

I heard a lot of good things about the PC 7424. Anyone has experience on the Girots obrital polisher? Is the PC 7424 is US made????

Your best bet is to come down here on a Saturday and learn at Meguiar's Saturday class. Here is the link:

vtrader, it is a long drive from San Francisco. I would love to come down one of these days.

Re: How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

In my opinion I would leave any machine polishing as a last resort.

You figure your car might take a beating after the divorce and must be parked outside.

Eventually you'll want to "restore" it's original luster and that would involve eating up a little of the clear coat with a machine.

Bottom line leave the frickin' clear coat alone (no machining) until you really need to cut into it to get the paint back up to near original condition.

Kills me (LOL) when guys get their new cars and immediately start wearing away at the clear coat.

    just my us$.02

Re: How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

not to create doubt , but , the very thought of using a wheel on my paint terrify's me cause i know exactly how i'd feel if i [censored] it up...not good

Re: How much better to wax the car by using a polisher

use the 3m glaze every 3-6 months and rainX wet/dry car polish on a weekly basis.. rainX is really easy to use on a wet car .. u dry and polish at the same time ..u can usually get both at pepboys or wallmart etc
