    transmission oil type on the 997S/shifting issues on 1st2nd

    HI,

    I just bought new a 997s with the short shifter. Having issues with first and second gear shift. Only way i can shift smoothly is by coming back at a lower rpm.. only then i can shift ..almost the same thing on the second gear but 1st is worse. I had almost the same issue wit my 996 which had 13k miles when i bought it .. I changed the transmission oil to mobi1 1 75/90 synthetic and that helped alot . should i try doing the same thing on this new 997 with only few hundred miles ?. I called many dealer and tech shops.. no one has changed the transmission oil on the 997s.. I saw on some euro board for the old 996 that porsche was using molylube (or some thing like that)..I know others r also having the same shifting issue on the 997.. this is the only fix I can think of ..any ideas ?

    All it probably needs is to have the cable adjusted.

    Since the car is new, tell the dealer to FIX IT and don't take "it's normal" or whatever as an answer .It's not normal, and should shift smoothly into all gears .

    actually it really happens when i press the clutch to change the gear .. if i bring it back to a lower rpm and press the clutch its ok .. its not really when i am moving the gear to 2nd .. its really strange ...

    Not to rant,but that is always their reason. Here is my list of "that's normal."
    1. Oil consumption.
    2. Lug nuts are rusting.
    3. External temp gauge climbs off the chart and shuts off when hot.
    Funny, neither my acura or honda have those problems.

    Still, you gotta go to the dealer.

    I agree with what's been posted here. That does not sound normal; I have had a factory-installed short shifter on my '04 996 C4S and a dealer-installed Porsche OEM short shifter installed on my '06 997S, and I have never had anything but smooth shifts into all gears. In the mornings, when the engine is cold, it may take a little extra effort to get into first, but it's very occasional and when it does happen it lasts, literally, only for the first couple minutes of driving.

    Beautiful yellow 997S, by the way. Did you get it at Park Place in Dallas per chance? I know Park Place had a Speed Yellow beauty pretty recently. I'm from Houston and I bought my car at Park Place because they were willing to deal; neither Momentum nor Porsche of West Houston was willing to do that, so I went out of town for my business.

    Have Momentum fix it; I bet it's a cable adjustment issue. Good luck.

    The short shifters are a bit stiff initially until they warm up. Is it getting easier to shift after 10 minutes or so?

    yes i bought it from parkplace 2 weeks back .. drove it back to houston .. They were easy to deal with ( this was the one parked inside).. Momentum wont make any deals.. westside porsche didnt have much on the lot ...I am taking it to momentum friday .i dont trust them much.. . lets see what happens

    Well, congrats on that purchase. I bought my car from Park Place, and then about a few weeks later, I saw on their website that they had that Speed Yellow beauty in their inventory. I remember that it had a sport shifter (an option I love).

    Seriously, had that car been at the dealership when I got there a few months ago, I probably would have snatched it right up! Right before deciding on my car (Seal Grey/Black), I even asked the sales guy if they had any yellow cars. He said, "No, we don't see too many 997S's in yellow; every now and then, but it's still pretty rare." I remember responding, "Well, that's too bad." I'm glad someone in Houston got it, though; it just increases the odds that I might see it driving around.

    Don't worry about the shifter; I'm sure Momentum (or West Houston) will be able to fix it. Congratulations again.

    thanks .. yah it has the short shifter, PSE, sport chrono, bose, self dim mirr, etc..
