Because the bright aluminium wheels are more obvious than black tyres in black lined wheel wells. The 17" wheels look as silly in the 987 range as 16" did in the 986 range.
I do prefer the five-spoke 18s, but the 17s look OK too - definitely not silly IMO. If I were buying a Cayman, I would probably take the standard and upgrade wheels a year-or-so down the road.
According to Chris Harvey's book the '73 RS had 185/70/15 tires on the front 6" wheels and 215/60/15 on the rear 7" wheels and the tires used were Pirelli CN36.
