    Porsche 7spd DSG Soon !

    Having developed their own variant of the the VW Borg Warner DSG gearbox, Porsche has filed a patent indicating the company will be unleashing the world's first seven speed DSG gearbox upon the public soon.

    Was at dealer today who thinks DSG is imminent mostly because all attemts to place orders for Tips are rejected by PAG. HIS theory is that tips are close to being phased out in favor of DSG. May be true. May also be that PAG just can't keep up with the demand for tips (over the 6speed option). We'll see.

    Yes. So if Porsche filed a patent app., I wonder what difference versus the Veyron 7-speed "DSG" they are requesting to patent as their own variant of the BW/VW system?

    even if they launch the 7 speed dsg, i am sure the tip. option will remain available, and will sell well..

    I had always thought DSG was invented by VW, not Volkswagen. I hope Porsche uses some unique tech of their own on it.

    dsg was invented by porsche in the 80's but only on racing cars(962 i think)!! as for bugatti their gearbos is a Ricardo design.
    VW gearbox isn't used because it can't stand the "necessary" levels of torque.

    Guys,

    Just because Porsche has filed a patent app doesn't mean we'll see the new 7 speed soon. Getting the fundamentals covered in a patent app and getting something reliable into the consumers hands can be years apart. So lets not get our hopes up too high. I'm just as excited as everyone but having a few patents of my own know the time involved.

    It really depends. I could file a patent on something that we've already got ready for the marketplace. Or, like you said, I could file something that could be years away.

    Alan,

    You have 1 year from publishing the idea in any public format or offering it for sale (not necessarly selling it just offering it) and you must file a disclosure. Most ideas like the DSG would be protected by patent well before they was offered for sale to the public, this is mostly to beat the other guys to the punch.

    I wouldn't think we would get a DSG inside probably 2 years. It does sound very exciting though.

    To test the theory, does anyone know if or when Porsche filed a patent for VTG (I know it was used on diesels, but this is a gasoline variant, no?)?

    Perhaps it would be an interesting benchmark of comparison. That being said, tiptronics are moving hard, so Porsche has no need to play its hand quite yet

    Perhaps we should start a betting pool on when the 7 speed PDK will actually be available. My guess is model year 2008.

    They will likely offer both the Top and the DSG for awhile. There are plenty of casual buyers out there who dont care if a 997 or 987 comes with a Tip or a DSG just as long as it is not a manual.

    Then you have those who will pay extra on top of extra to get a 7 SPEED DSG sports car. Smell any PCCB like prices yet? Maybe we will.

    The 7spd DSG will probabaly be released available for all Porsches starting with MY08. Handy timing with the updated 997 "that is supposed to be a huge leap ahead" according to some Porsche people (the change to direct injection to meet 2009 smog laws results in more power). I guess all of this cranks up next summer after the August factory vacation is over and they start building the MY08 models.

    Ferrari, Lambo, Aston have no 7 spd on their near horizon.GM Corvette does. Stay tuned then for more Corvette v Porsche 7speeder yadda yadda. The circle continues.

    Best of luck to all those who "bought" into the "networked remapped ECU tiptronic" marketing story on their 997TT. Hope they will still "enjoy" their ancient automatic transmission when the rest of the sports car world has already moved light years ahead. Boy oh boy, these tiptronic guys are really going to take it up the you know what once porsche introduces their long overdued DSG transmission...

    Since DSG technology reportedly solves the " herky-jerky" full auto mode complaints of the current BMW, Maser( QPorte to get regular autobox soon due to intended customer complaints) and Ferrari seq manual boxes, I don't see why Porsche would bother having Tip slushbox and DSG box AND full manual . Dealers wouldn't want the " wrong inventory " hassles of Tip vs DSG sitting on the lot simultaneously either.

    BTW, Ferrari eng chief admitted a couple years ago they are well along on their own DSG box to replace the current seq system.

    I'm sure within 5 years all manufacturers will use this second gen system for their seq manual transmissions.

    I think they should still produce the tiptronic. Like Audi, they didn't discontinued the Multitronic after the DSG came in.
