    997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

This is the scan of a comparative test from the italian AUTO journal. Usually their performance data are bulletproof , which makes the results even more interesting!!

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

    91.8 km/h in 1st gear?

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

The 997 Turbo video seen worse time than this test when 0-250kmh acceleration.

BTW it is very detailed article

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

WOW nice.... The GT3 seems to be more tractable from lower speeds than the Turbo is, which is awesome.

    Nice one gemini_zar

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

Look at the gap between 4th and 5th gears in the GT3! That's 70 km/h in the top speed range.

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

This shows how much better is the 997TT for an everyday use, turbo engine has much better torque and even better gas milage. The GT3 gear ratios are too long just like previous generation. This really cuts some driving pleasure, at least this was what I felt while driving 996 GT3, the power is to spread along the rev range, never really felt big punch from the engine, I much prefer the power deliver on Turbo engine thrue the rev range, just my 2 cents.

It cuts the daily rounds driving pleasure, but this car is meant to live above 5500rpms, on a track, revving hard, similar to many other high-strung NA engines (F430, S2000 etc etc).

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't read Italian, but it seemed like the GT3 had some better elasticity acceleration numbers in 5th gear than 997TT? How could that be true?

I think the GT3 got the better milage...it's in km/L.

Yes, good observation. 40-80 km/h range is where the Turbo in 5th gear is below 2000 rpm and the turbochargers have no juice. The high-compression GT3 engine on the other hand, fares a bit better.

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

Best times so far for each of the car. Both cars are broken-in with more than 10 000kms on it. This may be the reason. The one in autocar had about 2500kms on the clock.

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

Damn, haven't even noticed! The times are really good! The one tested in AMS achieved 0-100 km/h in 3.7, 0-160 km/h in 8.0 and 0-200 km/h in 12.3 seconds. This car did it in 3.8 and 7.6 seconds. I think it's safe to say that it can do 0-200 km/h in about 11.8-11.9 seconds.

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

There is something wrong in this test guys. I have the Sport Auto article and that GT3 does 78 kmh in first gear second gear in 129kmh , third 179, fourth 227, fiifth 283 and last sixth 310. So there is a huge difference on gear redline speeds

I know it's Km/L, please read again the numbers, 997TT needs less gas than GT3.

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

I'm facing the same decision, have both on order, drove my neighbours 997TT, adored it.

    Definitely going to buy that.

When the first GT3s come in, will decide weather to keep my 996 or to upgrade.

Maybe you misunderstood a litlle. The numbers indicate the distance traveled in km's with 1 liter of fuel.
Please look at the numbers again and you will find the GT3 is a little better. At full speed both can drive less then 3 km on one liter. Turbo 2.O km/liter versus GT3 2.4km/liter.
    Hope this helps.

POWERCAR had danish pro racecar driver Kurt Thiim driving both, the 997 GT3 and the 997 Turbo on the Nuerburgring Grand Prix track which is pretty short, even compared to the Kleiner Kurs in Hockenheim. Surprisingly, Kurt Thiim liked the 997 Turbo more and it was even faster than the GT3, despite the semi-slicks on the GT3.

However, don't get this comparison wrong: the 997 Turbo is heavier than the GT3, so after a couple of rounds, I doubt that the Turbo can keep up with the GT3 on a race track.
Of course there is also the price tag of the GT3, which in my opinion is the "best bang for the buck" from Porsche right now.

I would love to own both but since I can't and since I'm not a professional track driver (or an "each weekend on the track" addict), I've opted for the (unfortunately) more expensive 997 Turbo.

    Re: 997 Turbo vs 997 GT3

Can anybody explain the differnce of 1 gear in both tests and sport auto test please. One is 90+km other is 78 kmh???

Sport Auto data are correct ones! You can simply flush down the toilet Italian mag test data...

Italian car magazines seem to be flawed indeed... Remember that crazy test of the 997TT vs. F430 etc. The only test out of about 100 with such crazy performance data

Maybe the Italian magazines should focus on translating sportauto and AMS tests. Would improve content quality quite substantially

We all do. They will publish reliable performance data, regardless of whether they are good or bad.
