MY2006 Paint Sucks?

As I have been washing and cleaning my car, I've been noticing a lot of little paint defects that I can attribute to "human error". Seems like I'm not liking the "hand built" quality of my car. For instance, paint does not seem to be even in certain spots of the car. I will post pics. On other sections of the car, it almost seems like they painted over a "dust" speckle. The car has never been in an accident and I believe I had less than 10 miles (7 maybe) on the car. All body panels are perfect - it's the paint job that sucks. Anyone else notice this?

Scotia steve rejecyed his early Boxster for paint defects - annoying aren't they, but most P cars seem to have them irrespective of whether Finnish or German built. You may find there is a specification where a certain number of a certain size are deemed acceptable by the factory !

There is a thread on the 997 board about a similar particle on the door panel.

I have one or two small imperfections too - i'm fussy tho, 90% of owners wouldn't even notice them IMO

There seems to be a wave of paint defects. There over a dozen cases that have been reported on rennlist/rennteam etc!

Is your car Stuttgart build or Finland?

I have a MY06 baasalt black built in Finland and the finish is perfect.

My '05 seal is also perfect. I have a hard time finding any orange peel.

A "little bird" who is in a position to know has recently told me that Valmet cars tend to be better built than the Stuttgart ones.

Been rumoured ever since they started building in Valmet - supposedly down to better air filtration and environmental laws on emissions etc.

The paint on my finnish 987 is far superior in application to the previous finnish built 986, but then the panel pressings are so much better to start with.

I recently completed an extensive (and successful) machine polishing on my 06 Midnight Blue Metallic, and while I wouldn't say the paint sucks, it definitely has painted-in blemishes. Nobody on the planet will care.

So Who Has Great Paint?

Just wondering. I would like to hear some opinions of people.

Personally I think Porsche's have very good paint on them. Granted its not a Chip Foose style custom car with a zillion coats of hand rubbed out paint but its pretty good IMHO.

Its a good few years since i delat with auto companies, but beck in the 90s it was pretty much taken as read that Toyota had the best paint system, followed by Nissan.

Thats not to say they were the best finish, but they were the best technology and endurance wise. Toyoa seemed to get much less orange peel effce than Nissan, even though thye both used similar electropaint configurations

Environmental considerations are advancing all the time and paint technology is evolving to catch up. For example, recent Toyota's that I've looked at up close are exhibiting very bad orange peel in certain shades - such as the light metallic green (the more expensive models do seem to be better though...). This probably has more to do with the high solids - low VOC paint formulations than any real "quality" issue.

Porsche is now using water-borne paint by Dupont (I read in Panorama).

I spent the whole of last summer painting the shell of my project with over $2000 worth of Glasurit products (seven layers of clear, wet sanded to P2500 and polished - see pics) and have gotten to the point where I can really pick apart paint jobs. It is next to impossible to find a "perfect" factory job from any maker, but Porsche paint is quite good.

Toyota is the best system, not necessarily the best finish - that orange peel is caused by higher current in their electrophoretic paint process than some other manufacturers. Orange peel is not good for clarity of reflection but its not all bad

Bentley and Rolls royce are very good, but then if you have to sand the car between so many coats of paint you'd expect it to be, and you should see some of the shoddy pressings they start with

Ok, so thanks for the input guys. Now the question is, do I bitch about it? Is it worth having them repaint it? Come resell time, I don't want them to come back and say "it's been repainted". OR if I don't do anything, they may come back and say "It looks like it's been repainted, look at these dust particles that have been painted in!"

I understand what you are saying, but if you could see the same brand new Corolla that is in the parking lot at my place of work, you may actually have reservations. The appearance of that finish is so sub-standard IMO that I cannot imagine calling it the best system (for that example anyway).

What I have noticed is that I can see the same model car with differing finish textures in the same color, which demonstrates that there are many process variables that can change from day to day in the production environment. I saw a black Saturn Ion in a parking lot the other day that, despite being spotlessly clean, exhibited horrible texture. Yet another black Ion parked on a street adjacent to me looks not bad actually. Higher end cars (Porsche included) do seem to have more consistent (and less) texture.

Yes Topher, fellow 944 owner here! That particular car is an '87 S.

IMHO VW/Audi Has Great Paint

Not sure how they do it but they all seem to have beautiful paint. All are super smooth with no orange peel. I just looked at a new GTI and the finish on it was easily the equal of anything else.
