    997 Carrera S Service/All Services Necessary Here

Am scheduled to have the initial 20,000 mile service in the next several weeks. Is there any internal engine work that is conducted during this work? My dealer here in Orlando charges almost $500 for this 20,000 service, which basically involves an oil change with various A/C filter changes, suspension lube, etc. Why couldn't I just pay for the oil change and forgo the $325 price gouge for nothing additional services.

Thanks and looking forward to your comments with interest.

They also replace a filter that screens out dust and other particles when fresh air is brought into the car, and they probably run a diagnostic check, too. Given Porsche's smaller repair volume, the added overhead of running a service department gets folded into the cost of an oil change.

I talked my way into watching the 20,000 mile service. Oil and filter change. Wiper blades replaced. Cabin filter replaced. Engine air filter replaced. General visual inspection. The valuable part was reading all of the codes stored in the on board computer. Mine had a "soft" engine overspeed - measured by the number of times the ignition fired each of the cylinders. I guess the philosophical issue is do you want your car to have all of the correct dealer maintenance documented, or do you choose to save some bucks. I change my oil and filter at 5,000 miles. All of the other maintenance I leave to the dealer.

Blessed to be driving a Porsche.

Less than 1000 miles till my 20K...had oil changed at 7500. I'll definitely let the dealer do all scheduled and not worry about the price. IMO, more than $325 depreciation with every missed stamp in the maintenance book.

Craig...almost 10 months to make your first post! Got pics?

Did the code reader pick up the low oil pressure warning from when you did the oil change ??

Re: 997 Carrera S Service/All Services Necessary Here

What I should have posted is that I change oil and filter every 5,000 miles; not at 5,000 miles.

I was not informed of any codes for low oil pressure. I will ask the technician if the On-Board Diagnostic system records low oil pressure codes when the oil is changed.

You can also go into the dealership and ask them to reset the 'oil change' when you do it yourself so that the car understands it's been done.

For 500.00 do they also change the air in the tires. Nothing like new tire air to make the car faster.

Re: 997 Carrera S Service/All Services Necessary Here

The overhead thing for the service department is often bogus. My old Audi was from Jack Daniels in NJ. When you go into the service department, there were three desks: Volkswagen ($65/hour), Audi ($85/hour) and Porsche ($105/hour). I guarentee the same guys did all the oil and filter changes.

I would guess that the extra $325 covers a scheduled checklist of visual inspections and - if necessary - adjustments, including ensuring that you have no leaks, enough brake pad thickness to make it worthwhile taking the car home, a full inventory of underfloor panels and maybe brake cooling ducts, no slits on the otherwise invisible inner sidewalls of your tires, etc..

Assuming you have SOME faith in your dealer, how many of those $325 are your own peace-of-mind over the next 20,000 miles worth to you?

Re: 997 Carrera S Service/All Services Necessary Here

Price seems fair for a 20000 mls service. They do a lot more than just change oil. I also watched as they performed the service. They even went over all the rubber seals from the doors , trunk with a special product so they do not dry out. And reading out the computer was fun to watch.

I don't understand this at all, I am afraid. You buy an expensive sports car and then think about penny-pinching on service items. Modern Porsche aren't even particularly expensive to maintain. You buy the car, be prepared to spend what it costs to look after it properly.
