One ten day old baby. I live on a mountain in the southeast. Little snow. I do a fair bit of travel to Florida and am forced to drive my boring Landcruiser if I take my bikes and family. The C4S gets out a few times per month. Is the Cayenne Turbo a true Porsche Turbo that just sits a little higher? Or an X5?

I'm not sure the cayenne turbo is equal to the porsche turbo. It is probably closer to the C4 as far as performance. I mean this thing weighs 2 tons. I'm sure you C4S is about 1 ton or less. That takes a lot of power to get it moving. I don't think your going to find a faster SUV out there though. Its practical and continually changes based on your moods. I mean this thing can lower down for faster driving and lift up for off road. Even if your not going rock climbing in it, hey you can go camp on the beach in the summer time.
If I was you I would keep the C4S and get a cayenne S or V6 for the kids. And everyday you work, drive the C4S.
Its the small things in life like driving that make life worth living. Why give up a fast car? Just my 2 cents.

The 996 Turbo and Cayenne Turbo can never be anything alike, come on now. But yes I think this car would be perfect for you from the description of your lifestyle. You can get to Florida 4hrs. earlier than in the Land Cru. 
Im sure the baby will have a smile on it's face the whole time your driving, he/she knows his/ her dad is driving a Cay TT! Congratulations by the way! And to answer your question the Cayenne is closer to the X5(if you didn't gather that already)>

The Cayenne Turbo weighs over 2.5 tons at 5192 pounds and the C4S is well over 1.5 tons at 3296 for the manual and 3417 for the automatic.
The driving experience will certainly be more like the X-5 than the 911 Turbo. The Cayenne can't be tossed around in corners like a sportscar. Among SUV's however, it is the best handling ride available.

Get the Cayenne Turbo. Honestly. I was in a similar situation when my wife gave birth to our first child because I owned a 996 Turbo during that period. After the birth of the child, I had less and less time to drive my 996 Turbo and I mostly drove our family car, a Mercedes ML55 AMG which actually was fun. But then, my wife expected our second child and it was clear: the 996 Turbo had to go because my time schedule would be even more tight than before. I sold my 996 Turbo, I miss it a lot but I'm happy I get a Cayenne Turbo end of this month after a short unsatisfying Mercedes E55 AMG "interlude".
Yes, the Cayenne Turbo is a real Porsche and no, it is no sportscar and not even close to your C4S. But it is fun and...you can have this fun together with your family, on long trips and even when it is snowing. After a few years, you can always reconsider your decision and go for a Porsche sportscar again. 
Maybe you should ask your Porsche dealer to let you drive a Cayenne Turbo for a few hours.
