That's very fast! And it's only a normal vehicle, not an M car.

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

I wonder if it can be "chipped" for an extra 75hp like many turbos for very little money?

Probably can be, but why would you? A daily driver should be perfectly reliable IMO, something which chipping it can't guarantee.

A finely engineering car like a BMW or Porsche Turbo should be able to handle an additional 25% power without any major long-term problems. I know a 996TT certainly can...

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

brilliant times! I wonder how the same car with the diesel biturbo will perform. i has 580Nm of torque, more than a 996TT...

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

amazing perf. for a non M bmw , the m3 should be in the 4.5 o to 100 category..

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

Pretty fast indeed. This car and the upcoming M are going to raise more "Porsche give us more HP" conversations :-)

The numbers are credible: I recently met a 335i (a Touring test car from Munich - not the Coupe) in my A8. Up to 200kph the BMW was not significantly slower than my car! Only above 200kph a quite substantial gap opened.

The BMW is really fast for that kind of money I guess, I like it (it's actually quite some time ago that I said something like that about a BMW )

Don't aske me why: the 335i Touring I met looked pretty attractive... With the right rims and a good color.

BTW: The new X5 has a rather tradional style (no Bangle elements). I wonder whether BMW will get back to their traditional desgin. If so, this would clearly be a step into the right direction

Yes I agree. The touring looks alright. A little bit overdone at the rear, but otherwise it's okay. I was talking about the new Coupé, but I still have to see one in person. On pics it doesn't look good to me, very boring, Japanese design IMO.

And you are absolutely right about the new X5. The first new BMW within years with a rather pretty design (and it's SUV! ). I would appreciate a change in their design philosophy as well.

    Did somebody tell Porsche?

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

Impressive, to say the least, and no M badge in sight.Don't think any coupe in that price range can match that, even the new Audi TT.

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

wow thats impressive... Whats the M3 gonna be capable of??

You can easely get 35 HP more out of the Audi/VW 1.8 l turbo with a chip with absolutly no problems. Had one for 6 years.

The same with the the S4 turbo engine .. 20 % power increse is safe

I know this, but look at Kreso's post regarding the VW Golf GTI, which detonated due to an ABT chip. Not saying they can't be reliable, but how do you guarantee that?

A factory engine can also break, no garantee against that but to replace it for free. In my opinion/ experience, the risk with a 20 % HP increase on a turbo engine is low and I would take it without any hesitation ( but done by a proper tuner) The ABT chips here is Switzerland on VW/Audi are factory guaranteed.... that says also something.

If they offer warranty, that's a different matter.

So, 275 RWHP plus about 20% by chipping it... That equals 330 RWHP! That would make even the new M3 seem very uninspiring.

Porsche Cayman is taking a big "gulp" at the moment. This angers me because the Cayman looks so attractive, until you look at the price tag !!

275 to the wheels? Smells a bit fishy though

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

BMW under-rated power data for 335i. Actual power is around 330-340hp/420-440Nm! The same thing as Porsche did for its Turbo engine's for sometime...

340 horsepower sounds about right. Just a tad slower than the M3 at a higher weight. At 20% extra power with a chip, that translates into 410 horsepower! If you want to get frisky, you might even get 430. That would put it in the high-15-second 0-200 km/h territory. And all that for 40.000 USD. Boy, are Americans lucky.

Seems like a really cost-effective way of getting a superfast daily driver for a reasonable amount of money. I mean, it costs the same as an Audi A6 in the States.

Re: BMW 335i Coupe first test

Its a hideous looking car. The new 3 series looks like a BMW had sex with a Honda and then ran to a Triumph TR 7 abortion clinic.

BMW should update their branding statements to reflect their new company design philosophy.

The old message: "BMW Fast As Schnell"

    to

The new message: "BMW Ugly As Hell"

That car is a nasty piece of design work.
