    LP640 Test Drive

    Test drove a LP640 today. 70% autobahn, 30% country road.

    + Real punch! Should suprise no one, really. But when it get's storming above 6,000 revs, it feels like a time warp

    + (optional) ceramic brakes are excellent

    + E-gear IMO even better than F430's F1 -- very soft, very fast -- With the F430's F1 you'll have to learn when it's the right moment for shifting, otherwise it might get jerky. Not so with the LP640's E-gear. And throttle sound while downshifting is great! An awesome dry cough!

    + So is sound in general. Not as loud as your usual Ferrari exhaust F/X, but brilliant.

    + This "front lift" feature to enter ramps/driveways is a stroke of a genius

    +++++ Those doors!!!

    +/- Steering is very direct, but also VERY stiff. You need both hands to get around a corner. I liked it on the autobahn but on curvy backroads or longer inner city driving it might get very annoying. But overall, the car feels much more precise than i expected. Still more of sharp butcher's knife and not some surgical instrument like the F430, though

    - The car really is wide

    - Interior quality. A lot of parts look cheap and thin, especially the E-gear paddles, the button collection where usally the manual stick is located or the aircon cover... and the Kenwood satnav TFT looks aftermarket. Where's Audi if you need them?


    VERDICT:
    A true supercar, a poster car for the bedroom wall. And much more usable and nimble than I thought. If I could afford it, I would buy it immediately. In balloon white. Or this matt gray from the frankfurt show.

    Excellent report!
    So, you liked e.gear more then F1?!
    Ceramics look awsome(both front and rears are 380mm/6calipers, both on Murci and Gallardo!)...

    Thanks! But with "this matt grey" i referred to the matt grey from the press photos when the LP640 was introduced. The car i drove today is orion (?) black.

    Yes. Apart from pulling out in 1st gear which is more jerky than the F1, the E-gear felt equally fast but smoother. I didn't even quite notice the gearchanges. Maybe I was too excited but E-gear is great.

    Seems to me it's too wide for our european roads, but apparently not.
    Glad you liked the e-gear. Lambo has made a lot of effort in that respect compared to the 1st generation.

    zzboba, how does it compare to your 430 in performance? If we only looked at numbers, it's supposed to only be as fast as the 430. Did it feel faster?

    Well, I WAS surprised as hell when the car tested only did 0-200 in 12,7 seconds, slower than the old Murc. Just seemed weird, considering it had 80 extra horsepower.

    I can see why. That car must be a monster above 200 km/h, though.

    Thanks for the pictures zzboba! It's making my wait a little more mad everytime I see real life pictures of this car Strangely enough, most of them seem to have the current roadster wheels. I ordered mine with the Hermera wheels, they suit the car much better IMO.

    AWESOME CAR!

    I recently saw a Murc Convertible and it truely looks like it's from another planet! The details in real life don't translate well in pics. There is so much going on with the exterior that it looses something in 2d.

    I can't agree more, especially with Lambos. My friend's Diablo VT roadster looks like a menacing juggernaut in real life, compared to its photographic qualities, which are compelling yet not awe-inspiring. I feel much the same sentiment with the LP640.

    Ferraris look elegant in real life; their curvelinear shapes flow smooth. Porsches look haunch and business-esque, the newer ones differentiate from the photos a bit (I imagine the 997TT looks quite staunch in real life), however Lambos look unreal. Their design structures are futuristic and engrossing.

    It really was part of the puzzle, when we drove the DVT, it's audacious and wild side that seemed unsubstantiated by meer facts/credentials/statistics/numerics.

    However, the Audi-processed Lambos appear to have lost some of that verve... I can only judge when I get a drive in a Murci/Gallardo, have not had the pleasure of it yet.

    Subjective the LP640 feels faster! But i don't trust my feelings, because...

    a) the LP640 is so low, it feels like high speed even if you are just cruising

    b) the F430 gets very loud when accelerating hard which gives a "stressed" impression, as if the car is trying hard -- while the not-so-noisy LP640 comes up with speed just like that...


    Before i took the LP640 for a spin, I thought that the engine is a torque-monster at any rev. But it isn't, it feels very similar to the F430's engine, the real "kick in the back" starts at 5000-6000 revs and it goes up to nearly 8500.

    Looks mint in that colour. At first glance it also looks like you have high heels on in pic 4. lol You know you shouldn't drive in heels.
