    Panel gaps

Is it just me, or are the panel gaps pretty big?
I can't make up my mind if that's deliberate or not!

How would you expect your mind to know? What you need is info!

    Re: Panel gaps

No, what I need is wild speculation, scandal, intrigue, a good car chase, and a beautiful girl on my arm at the end.

Erm... sorry. Where was I ? Oh. Yeah. I think the gaps are too big. They could be smaller. I can only assume that they are that big for a Good Reason. Perhaps that the door gaps need to be that big in case of body flex (?) and the rest have to match otherwise they'd look odd....?

    That's funny.

So, say, if you ruled the world, how big would a gap be?

Whatever Porsche's reason -- and for sure they have a reason -- I can tell you one benefit. I just finished detailing my car, and those gaps make it easy to get your finger down there just far enough to finish it off.

    Re: Panel gaps

Smaller gaps are fine, but poor fitting panels show up more easily, and in the event of an accident they increase the risk of panels overlapping and not being able to get doors open.

    Re: Panel gaps

But what I'm wondering is what's a good gap size? Eighth inch? Sixteenth? Three millimeters? And how does one decide?

You are getting paranoid. Perhaps a session with Dr Phil might help.

    Re: Panel gaps

Actually, I have not been impressed with this "hand built" car at all. The gaps ARE too big, and the paint doesn't seem to be uniform throughout the car. Seems like Dieter or Gunther has been lazy. My BMW's fit and finish has been much much better. And that doesn't even compare to the Lexus...

    Re: Panel gaps

I agree panel gaps are subjective. This was just an idle thread to provoke some opinion. The gaps appear to be uniform, so obviously it is deliberate. I (personally) think it could be smaller. But hey ho. If the doors won't open after a crash, does that not indicate that the safety cell has been compromised, which would have to be due to a fairly substantial accident. In such a case, I wouldn't have thought that a few extra mm of door gap would make much difference. Or maybe it would, if the deformation was torsionally?
