Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

Are there any long-legged Cayman owners out there? How do you fit in the car? Any better than in a Boxster? Or is it essentially the same setup? The same dimensions?

I'm 6'4" with most of my height in my legs. I'm taken with the Cayman S and may consider turning in my 997 in the future for one. But I do like the Carrera's legroom, which seems to be a few inches more than the Boxster (and Cayman?).

    What do you think?

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

Excatly the same as the Boxster - the seat position, dashboard and engien firewall are all in exactly the same position.

At 6'4" you will get in but your seat will be touching the firewall and you may have to drive with your left leg touching the centre console

When was the legroom any different between the Carrera and the Carrera Cab?

LOL... Porsche has done a wonder with marketing.

Chipper, I am 6"2 and I own a 987s and I find the leg room to be absolutely no problem. Since I am not as tall as you are, I can only tell you that with my seat all the way touching the firewall, my legs can stretch all the way and just barely touch the maximum cabin length. To me, I think Leg Room may not be your concern but headroom could be an issue. For me at 6"2, I still have one helmet space with a little more but depending on your proportion, I may find the headroom a bit tight. Though they are the same dimensions, I do feel that the Cayman S has a little less headroom but it may just be imaginary. My German buddy is 6"4 and he said the 987 and 997 were both no problem for him. Of course the 997 feels a lot better on the leg room due to the 4 seater setup but for sure the 997 headroom to me is no better than the 987 and Cayman. I think you will be fine with either one.

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

    Thanks, ptcja!

Most of my height is in my legs, so I don't think headroom will be a problem. I have owned a Boxster before and loved its sportiness at almost any speed. It could get a bit uncomfortable for me after about 30 minutes driving. But then on Oahu there are not many places you can drive for much more than thirty minutes. Aloha.

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

You do get less head room in a Cayman

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

chipper if you owned the old boxster the new boxster will feel like business class if you consider the old one Economy. The other day I sat in my friend's 2005 Audi TT (the old one)... while the car looked very good from the outside, I still find its babyface to be aging a bit. Parked beside my new 987s, it is tiny and small and gosh... wait till I got in and I felt so cramped and claustrophobic that I couldn't believe it was a 4 seater. I used to love the car and I think I definitely would have sold it off a long time ago. Ever sat in an AUDI TT? If you are okay with that, you will be fine with anything. If you want room, from a personal basis, I think Boxster is less claustrophobic maybe cos you can open the top but if you live in Hawaii, maybe it is indeed a better choice just like a few friends of mine said they drove open top more in Miami than closed top.

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

ptcja, so you think the 987 is bigger inside than the 986? I did own a 986, but I figured the 987 would be the exact same interior dimensions. Legroom is the big issue for me.

And do I assume correctly that the Cayman has the same interior as the Boxster 987?

    Aloha, Chipper

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

Chipper, the CAYMAN's interior is exactly the same as the 987 s. The exterior is different and the side vents are different and it has a hardtop. The boxster s has more headroom to me and the cayman is less spacious by comparison. The 986 to me was pretty cramped. I think it really comes down to what you want. If you want a coupe go for the cayman and it is more rigid. However, next year's 987s will get the same engine and technology 3.4 295 hp and laymen really can't tell unless you track and the 987s looks like a bargain now unless you absolutely dislike the sun and the soft top. It is definitely less stiff and the ride is a lot softer and torsional rigidity is lower. The Cayman S I tested V the 987s 3.2 L felt a lot more aggressive but the 987s is really a funster for open roads and open top. So what would it be? Take both then.

It will be identical. After all, the Cayman is a Boxster coupe in all but name. They are even closer now that they share the same engines.

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

I test drove a Cayman S today for the first time. The legroom was actually fine with the seat all the way to the rear. However, the seatback would not recline enough for comfort because of the firewall. My salesman told me that with the power seat package (my test car had manual seat), one can adjust the seat lower and get more recline for the seatback.

Anybody fiddle with the seat controls to get maximum legroom as well as a comfortable recline? Maybe by moving the seat forward slightly to ge a better angle on the recline.

BTW, the Cayman S was fun to drive. I'd say, more fun than the 997, at least at normal street driving speeds.

The car was a "launch" model with PCM, PASM, Nav., S wheels, sport steering wheel, sport chrono, etc. My only complaint was that the hatchback rattled.

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

I think that it is very likely (based on experience) that the opposite is true and the manual seat can be lowered more than the power seat.
The electric motors take up some room under the seat and reduce the range.
I doubt if there is any difference at all in the backrest recline range.
Don't believe the salesman (nor me!) - check it out for yourself.

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

So you think the manual seat can actually be adjusted lower than the electric?

Any idea how you would get a combination of the best legroom and the best seatback recline? Maybe not slide the seat all the way back, but leave it just slightly forward to allow for better angle for the recline?

Re: Legroom in Cayman? Any better than Boxster?

I seen this on other cars. KenH is right, the electric motors take up some space.
