997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

    http://www.channel4.com/4car/feature/feature/geneva2004/preview/geneva2004-6.html

I've always believed the 997 would be announced in Paris, but I suppose it could be possible to see it in Geneva, ie. in two days!
This would leave Paris for the new Boxster and the all new Boxster Coupe.
It's all speculation, but patience dear Rennteamers, 48 hours to go.
PS: Channel 4 is usually quite accurate about their news.
PPS: This would make sense with RC's news that first costumers get their car this summer. Whishful thinking!!!

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

Could be that they announce Std. 997 (C2) and in Paris they introduce the C2 S and C2 Cab.

I just hope they show something @ Geneva.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

    *faints*

(really, my pulse is about 200 now )

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

    From Fanch's link:
    Quote:

    Porsche 911 (spy shot)
    WHAT'S AT THE SHOW
    Aston Martin - Dodge
    Citroen - Ford
    Honda - Lancia
    Lexus - Mercedes-Benz
    MG Rover - Pinzgauer
    Porsche - Rolls-Royce
    Seat - Toyota
    Vauxhall - Volvo

Porsche's new 997-series 911 is ready to make its public debut; we expect to see the Carrera Coupe first this spring

It would be a nice surprise and the timing does make some sense. If it's going to be in production this summer, a Paris debut wouldn't have much punch to it. Everyone would already know everything about it. I have also seen recent news reports that 911/Boxster sales are dropping fast with news of the new models introduction coming up soon. I thought I read that on Rennteam but can't seem to find it. A Paris introduction seems too long a wait and too much a dependence on Cayenne sales.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

Well, I wouldn't be surprised but right now, Paris is (still) in the word.
There are two other surprises coming from Porsche but I promised to keep my mouth shut. Only one thing: it won't be the 997 and it won't be the 4-door sedan.
No, I keep my lips sealed.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

You are killing us RC. What's up with the torturing?

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

The next logical step for Porsche; a minivan!

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

    RC....talk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YOU MUST TALK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can sell my grandmother to let you talk!!

    Ciaooo

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

I can only think of the Boxster Coupe and Turbo 30 years or the all new Boxster.
Tomorrow Ron!!! Tomorrow! Breathe man, breathe...
Dario, don't sell her, it's not worth it!

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

Here's Autoweek's assessment from their website today: web page

    Quote:
    PORSCHE

Talking point: Will Porsche's fourth model be built? It would make sense to utilize the plant capacity in Leipzig, Germany, and to have another product with the Cayenne's V-8 engines. And there's no risk of further brand dilution, unlike with the Cayenne.

Not at Geneva: Porsche badly needs a new 911 and Boxster to counter slowing sales of the two models. But it will be another few months before the next 911 comes, and the Boxster won't surface before early 2005.

Of course, I doubt they know any more than we do.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

In this weeks Autocar magazine (UK) it has some undisguised photos of the 997 taken in Stuttgart on the 26th Feb (I don't have a scanner to post them here but hopefully they should appear on the net fairly soon). It states that the car will launch at Paris in Sept and go on sale in the UK in October. Only the Carrera 2 will be available at launch with other models arriving later. Dimensions of the car are 4430mm long, 1765mm wide & 1305mm high. Power is around 345bhp and the weight 1400kg (the 30kg increase over the 996 is a result of added safety measures in the front end of the floorpan). 0-60 for the C2 should be under 5 secs and top speed 180mph (prototype speedos read up to 330kph/205mph).

The magazine also shows a shot of the new Cayenne-inspired interior. The air vents and centre console is a one piece panel with space for a mobile phone ahead of the gear lever.

Price is meant to be Pounds59,000 for the C2 (Pounds2400 up on the 996 although this is meant to be offset by improved standard equipment)

I knew it would only be a short while before we started hearing about the weight increase. I was really hoping they would be able to keep the weight the same. After all, the 996 is a very safe car already. But it seems car companies need to be able to say a new model is safer than the outgoing model, hence this 30kg weight increase. I can't wait untill we start hearing the details on the 997 Turbo. That thing is going to be a tank in the weight department.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

I agree with you, but put into perspective, it's still quite light compared to the opposition (Maserati, Aston, Ferrari, `merc, even Ferrari, etc.)
But you are right. As Colin Chapman use to say: Light is right.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

Fanch - if you include Colin's old mark, it is a tank already (Elise is about 1/2 the weight)

Atlantis, are these pictures different from the ones we have been seeing here? I'll try to get a copy of Autocar mag. tomorrow and post here the pics.

    Of course...

we hear about undisguised pics and no one has them, ANYWHERE.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

I did my best to blow up the cover from very small image but still you can't make it out.

You guys don't believe us, don't you?
Let me put it this way: we're the first website which unveilled months ago that the 4th model will be a 4-door sedan and we're the first which unveilled the time and place of the 997 presentation. And we have more but we can't post it.
Only this: Paris will be highly interesting, definetely worth a visit. And no, no Minivan and no GT from Porsche.

And if you guys are lucky, you'll see the first official 997 pictures here first too.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

In todays world you really can't believe anything anyone says. Didn't you say that offical 997 pics were going to be released this month RC?????????

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

I sense some reverse psychology here

Yes they are different - they shots inside the magazine are of a silver 997 (the cover shows an old photoshop). The only bit of disguise is some small silver tape on the front indicators.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

    Atlantis is right,
There are completely new pics and to date, the best I've seen.
The front lights are completely uncovered and are indeed oval, nice.
However the front bumper is very ugly and I hope it's a temporary one.
The windscreen is slightly more angled.
I like the side mirrors, they remind me of the old M3's mirrors with some sort of double branches.
Very clear pic of the totally undisguised interior, and it's really nothing special, very sporty, functional, but not classy at all, not that the 911's interior's ever been classy anyway, but with the future competition from Aston, a touch of class would have been nice.
What is very nice though is the new instruments cluster.
Exactly like RC described (again ).
Put it this way, take the 996 instruments and space out each dial a bit, they still overlap each other but much less.
A perfect blend of 993 and 996 cluster, I liked that.
The rear is still faily disguised, not sure if those are the real exhauts pipes, but of they are they are flat ovals.
The rest has been described by Atlantis (thanks)
Sorry, I don't have a scanner, but I'm sure the pics will be online soon.
To sum it, it really is an evolution, if it wasn't for the oval headlights, a normal person wouldn't make the difference.
So if you want people to know you've got a 997, make sure it's a dark color for the headlights to stand out
The rear light are thinner and longer.

Re: 997 in Geneva according to UK Channel 4

Are we talking about the same pictures posted in the 997 Cabrio thread? Or are there more pictures to see?

The interior shot is the same. The exterior shots in Autocar are of a 997 coupe. Apart from it being a coupe it looks pretty much the same as the cabrio except:
    a) the wheels are undisguised (look like 18" carreras on it to me)
    b) the side indicators are amber instead of clear
    c) the exhaust pipes are oval
    d) the rear bumper has horrible bumps either side of the number plate (is this a US thing?)

I've just tried to take a picture of the article using my cameraphone but it doesn't seem to want to talk to my laptop via bluetooth. Annoying!
