    GT3 brakes overheating?

I mentioned to a friend that I was considering buying a 996 GT3 (he used to own one), and he said he had problems on the track with the front brakes overheating, and that larger ducting was available to remedy this.

Can anyone give me more info on this?

    Thanks

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

Indeed, one can buy the Cup ducts - which are standard on the GT3RS - larger - only disadvantage is that they hang lower and will bottom out more often on the street.

They are a porsche motorsport part.

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

Approx cost of the ducts? How hard is it to install/remove them? Would it be feasible to install them before a track event and then remove them after? By practical, I mean install in under an hour.

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

Don't know about fitting them, but Carnewal list them as 295 Euros/pair so this wouldn't be a big money upgrade.

absolutely, as long as you have a jack/lift

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

Cooling ducts would certainly not be a bad modification.
However, IMO the issue remains that for the really committed track-driving a GT3 is simply too heavy. Maybe this can be compensated (partly) by fitting bigger rotors and calipers .

correct. in 18m i had 5 or 6 replacements. one time this thing got loose and jammed behind the front wheel, at first i thought the steering is broke.

Did he experience pad fade or fluid fade or both? What type of pads and fluid is he using? Does he have an aggressive braking style? Is your braking style similar to his?

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

You dont say if your mate had a MK1 or MK2. I bet he had a MK1 as the MK2 has bigger brakes and better cooling as standard, not many people i know of have problems with the standard MK2 setup, although iv gone with JZM Alcon floats, pagid pads and castrol brake fluid in my MK2 GT3 CS as i was on PCCBs and it was only a matter of time now iv started to do TDs..

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

    It was a Mk2.

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

I stand corrected, but just changing the Pagid Pads seem to make a big difference ti me, my stock (street) pads on PCCBs at somewhere like Bedford which is a very brake intensive circuit used to fade very badly, almost to the point where they could even be considered dangerous, however my driving style is to stamp on the anchors brave and late, which probably didnt help but no such probs as yet with the yellow RS29S.. work sweet on the road too

    Re: GT3 brakes overheating?

I had the same problem on my GT3RS. However I found that I had forgot to run the pads in. (didnt know this was neccesary until i bought Pagid pads and they came with run in instructions)

When I didnt run the pads in they kept overcooking for the rest of their lifespan. With the new ones I have not had the problem....(exept the plastic ducts keep falling off on my car as well...)

Cargraphic has a kit that tilts the radiator to give more air to the brakes, a friend has just installed this and he is happy so far...

    best regards

    Jo
