Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

I drive on routinely about a 100 miles on curve-y rural highways and there's always a slow truck in front of me. One of the reasons I got the 997S was to get in front of slowpokes ASAP and as "safely" as possible.

Now I'm thinking of getting into a Turbo because it's quicker, MAYBE MORE FUN (?), and might as well do it now before my 06 997S depreciates toooo much.

Just wondering what you guys think? I can afford to burn another us$50K to trade up but It's not like I'm a $einfeld or a Movie $tar.

I guess what I'm asking is would the extra HP/Tq be worth it? How much more of a blast is the TT compared to the 997S?

Is it legitimate reason to get this car for "safer" passing?

Am I just a speed junky looking for another bigger fix?

Any constructive, suggestions, comments and good-natured humor are welcome.

Wife to MMD: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - d'ya think I just fell off the turnip truck?"

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

    What about test-driving it?...

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

    Don't ask, just do it!!!!!!

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

Get the turbo now! I have a 997S, and had a 996TT (and have driven a 997TT), and miss the turbo power. I am only waiting to spec out my 997TT this fall, as I like my dealer and respect my place in line. Only drawback is--once hooked on the TT drug, always hooked.

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

    Quote:
Horsepower is defined as work done over time. The exact definition of one horsepower is 33,000 lb.ft./minute. Put another way, if you were to lift 33,000 pounds one foot over a period of one minute, you would have been working at the rate of one horsepower. In this case, you'd have expended one horsepower-minute of energy.

multiply this force by 480 .... that is the reason you make the move to Turbo .

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

MMD, DO not be silly .... 997TT is totally different car than 997S ....it is monster ..... go for it dude .... i will get one too .....

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

    YES..............

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

Interesting question! I too have been trying to justify trading in the C2S for a turbo. The debate goes back and forth between Yes, why not, to what is the point.

My reality is that is really hard to go fast around Montreal anymore. There are speedtraps everywhere. So the reality is that the true benefit of the turbo could never really be used. Even with my existing Carrera it is hard to let her sing the way she was designed to sing.

The existing C2S is a very fast car for North American roads. In the twisties the car goes like stink. Rev the engine and the sound and performance is intoxicating. Do I want more speed at times, sure; until it is as fast as my previous superbikes, it will never be fast enough.

I have looked at the new Turbo and it is a very nice car. But for now I am on hold. It has everything that I want, but I don't think it offers that magical something extra that will make me trade in my current car. My car has been as close to perfect as any automobile that I have owned. I absolutely love it. If I lived in Germany, the decision would be very easy, but I don't live in Germany and need to keep my license in my pocket. So the only reason that I can see for buying a Turbo, is that I want one. But rationally, I can not justify why I need something I can not really use.

But then again, what is money if you can't enjoy it. If you want a turbo, go for it. I still might if the business has a really good quarter.

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

I sold my 997s and am now waiting for the arrival of my 997TT. I loved my 997S, but find it to have not enough power when i need it. After test driving the 997TT, I am sure I made the right decision.

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

Its always difficult for me to get the full picture from a test drive. The obvious differences can hide the more subtle differences that you will only notice after taking ownership. I have heard that the 997S is a purer driving experience than the 997TT. I didnt experience this in the test. I actually preferred the slightly weightier feel to the steering on the 997TT. My concern is that I would notice less response to steering inputs on the 997TT and miss my 997S.

I also didnt mind the sound of the turbos on the test and am worried I will miss my PSE after changing.

And finally, how much will I miss the cabrio?

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

Hey MMD, once a taste for speed, always a taste for speed (even if it is in your mind as your exagerate the sound and imagine letting the power rip around a turn). Having the power of the turbo is as much a mental excitement as a practical autobahn burning maximum speed to work everyday experience. The excitement of going to the Caribbean on holiday is as much the month after booking (and waiting for the date to arrive) as it is the days sitting in the bar at St. Barts while it rains. Live your dream and don't look back.

    No way Alan.

MMD, just place your wife in the passenger seat of a 911Turbo whilst you get in the driver's seat (997-or even 996 or 993), slam down on the throttle, and in a whoosh, she'll love it more than you do.

    LOL. You guys are somethin'!

Current wife was in passnger's seat of 997s when new. I decided to do a straightline speed check (to the allowed 4200 RPM) and we get to 130 mph or so. I say, "Hey honey, were at 135 mph!" She's reading a magazine, doesn't even look up and says, "That's nice dear... ."

I'm going along with the logic here. If you can swing it, just do it.

It seems the car is different enough from the regular Carreras that it won't seem like wasted money, right? Like it's a whole 'nother dimension of Porschemania.

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

    You got it!

Good to arrange a test drive if you can since people's tastes are different.

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

Initiald.com, u made the right decision and u did .... i am happy for u. can u test drive 997TT in HK ? there is no demo car for test driving in taiwan . maybe i should go to visit u when i go to HK, hee hee just kidding .. by the way , how much does it cost for buying a 997TT in HK ( i mean base price) ? it costs around $300K USD in TW

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

2.3 mil HKD roughly the same as TW

    You somehow have confused....

You somehow have confused....Passion and Obsession with logic. There is NO logic financial or otherwise that will help you justify a $130,000 dollar wicked fast car. None. If you have done it then you are delusional. This car is about Obsession with speed and beauty. Nothing else.

Thanks TWSLK55! I cannot wait till my car arrives! This month is taking forever.

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

initiald make sure you take some pix for all porschemania here. Owing the Turbo in HK is not only an honour but also a joy. At least you are doing it way before the GST which may be imposed!

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

I was in the same predicament. I owned a 997S and don't have a money tree in my backyard either.
Although the 997S was/is very fast. It was simply not enough. I struggled with the turbo until the day it came in. Even for a few days, afterward, BEFORE I took delivery.
I can't tell you how much more of a power in your face car it is.
You haven't even processed the intended pass in your head and the turbo has been dispatched well beyond your intended target. Sheer warp speed compared to the 997S.
Obviously, I say get it and enjoy it safely.

I think your wife is related to my girlfriend.

Go for it buddy... If you can afford it, there should be no reason not to

    LOL!!!

    GO FOR IT!

Figure more than $50k on the switch though.

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

Question to 997TT owners that previously owned a 997S:

    What do you miss?

Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?

If you can find a way to get comfortable with the loss you will incurr on the 997S, by all means find a way to get the 997TT. We are thrilled with ours and while driving it is a pure joy, just having the car in the garage to look at is a wonderful thing to do. Yes, sometimes I find myself in the late evenings sneaking out to the garage to just take a look! Don't look back, regrets have no future!
