    Porsche at Le Mans 2007.

    Found an interesting link on the homepage of the sportscar driver Tom Kristensen - here. Being danish I do follow news on his site, and this is the first time I see links to other brands.

    Does this mean that the factory supported team from Penske will be asked to use current Audi drivers ? The article also mentions Allan McNish whom I believe have raced in the Audi R8's. Could indeed be interesting to see a very strong driver lineup in the RS Spyder for Le Mans 2007.

    There was a thread not long ago regarding this issue. A porsche official said some weeks ago, that customers, who buy a RS Spyder for next year, won't be blocked by "Porsche".

    But i don't think, we will see Audi worksdrivers in a RS Spyder, as well as the other way round. Porsche will be trying to push the diesels from Audi and Peugeot as hard as possible with their limited means (power, fuel, ....). And therefor i guess will be at least 2 very strong cars with (un)official support and their werksdrivers, who know the RS Spyder inside out until the end of the season and also did the major development work the last year. So they alone would be a major asset on every customer car! The RS Spyders already give the Audi R10 a very hard time in the ALMS, so why not in LeMans too ?!


    Audi on the other side have no reason to let one of their drivers go to a competitor, especially in that year, where Peugeot will start for the first time with a diesel-engine. Apart from that Kristensen/McNish want to win LeMans again, since they didn't succeed this year.

    Porshe is building a LeMans GT1 contender...The street car will be simply be called the GT1. It is based on the Carrera GT and will have 950hp and will be lighter and faster than the Bugatti Veyron.

    Also...

    Lexus is building a GT2 contender for 2007,
    as well as Acura building an LMP2 contender for 07/08
    Panoz is also building an GT1 contender 07/08
    Ferrari is building a 599 for GT1.

    The GT1 and GT2 classes will be bursting with a robust field, while I think we'll see the Prototype classes dwindle. The bottom line is that people want to see cars they know instead of freaky exotic space ships.

    Although even RC said, that there are some rumours floating around concerning a monster Carrera GT, i don't see it coming. Especially not for Le Mans. Don't get me wrong, i'd love to see such a thing, that outruns a Veyron, looks "good" (or better than the Veyron) and doesn't weigh over 2 tons.

    Why does Porsche need to build the fastest production car ? Many of their cars aren't/weren't the most fastest in their class, but with the best handling and overall most sophisticated.

    Concerning the new GT 1/2 cars ... that will be extremely exciting to see. Porsche debutes at the 24h of Spa with their new 997 RSR. It is said to be a test for next year, but Manthey (winner of the Nurburgring 24h) has the lead ... maybe we see a suprise. The GT2 class is even more exciting, than the GT1 class. Panoz won LeMans, Ferrari won the most Fia-Gt races until now and Porsche leads the classement. With Lexus (eventually) coming, it will be even more fun to see those battles.

    Since the 575's aren't as dominating as the last years in GT 1, it'll be great to see how the 599 they race against the Astons, Corvettes and Saleens (+ Maseratis in Fia-GT).

    Thinking about it, i'll better arange some tickets for LeMans 07 and 08.
