    Newbie intro and question

Time to post as I've been lurking around these forums for a while now, so time to say "Hi". Last year we got our first Porsche - a new 987S. A few months later we added a fully loaded Cayenne S to replace our X5. But as there are three of us in the family and the Boxster was always in demand we decided to change it for something with enough seats for 2 adults and a small child. We settled on a slightly used 997 C4S Cab which was collected yesterday.

    Spec as follows:

    Slate Grey Metallic
    Black Roof

    # 19 inch CarreraClassic wheel
    # Adaptive sports seats
    # Automatically dimming interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor
    # BOSE Surround Sound System
    # CDC-4 six disc CD autochanger
    # Door entry guards in stainless steel
    # Extended navigation module
    # Fire extinguisher
    # Floor mats with leather edging
    # Heated seats
    # Leather interior in natural leather (dark grey)
    # ParkAssist
    # Porsche crest embossed on head restraints
    # Vehicle Tracking System
    # Rear section of center console in leather
    # Side skirts
    # Sport shifter
    # Sports exhaust system
    # Telephone module
    # Three-spoke multi-function steering wheel in smooth leather
    # Wheel centre set

Having a great time with it - the only downside at the moment is I am finding the sports shifter hard to live with, as it always seems to need "forcing" - even when warm. Its never as smooth as the standard gearshift I tried on a C4S hardtop demonstrator which almost felt like it slotted itself into the gear as soon as you started to move it.

This is an ex-demonstrator and has done 5k miles so it should be broken in. Anyone got any opinions on whether the sports shifter should be such a PITA?

    Re: Newbie intro and question

Welcome. You have a few nice cars there. As it's a demo car they do seem to take a little stick when being demo'd. You might like to have the clutch checked out, it could be as simple as this needing adjustment.

Once again, welcome to the forum and it is customary to post loads of pics of all your cars.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

May not be the shifter, may be the particular car. Have them fix it and tell you how they fixed it; or else don't buy it.

LoL -we even have a Boxster section to post the pics of your 987 S
As for the Short Shifter - get it checked at your dealer. The SS might feel a bit stiff when engaging 1st/2nd gear just after you started the car - this should go away after few minutes. I love this thing on my 987 S and I never would buy any Porsche without the SS (unless you go for a Tipper ) - but maybe that's just me

    Re: Newbie intro and question

    Welcome and very nice car.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

Nice car - i've only tried the sports shifter for a few miles, and i too found it very difficult to engage, almost needing to be forced at times.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

Which OPC did you get it from? It's such a good spec!
    Congrats!

    Re: Newbie intro and question

I have the sport shifter on my 997S and smooth as butter - end of may 06 prod run car

Thanks - It came from Silverstone. Agreed to buy it Monday and collected it Friday.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

With 3200+ miles my short shifter is still a little stiff on startup when at ambient temps.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

I would describe my short shifter as a little notchy which is good, very precise though not as silky smooth as standard but very very easy to engage ie. no use of force to push the gear knob into gear anytime. Maybe get Porsche service to check it out, or compare it to other cars with a short shifter they have on their lot.

    Welcome spize....

    Re: Newbie intro and question

Congratulations! Beautiful car with a very good specification. Enjoy!

    Re: Newbie intro and question

    Spize,
what production month is your car...mine is end of may06 and has 1200 miles...i've read here some earlier model had tougher 1st gears and maybe porsche modified then without a notice??? not sure...

    Re: Newbie intro and question

    Welcome Spize! Great looking baby!!!

    Welcome to rennteam,Spize.

Short shifter on the 997 should not be such a PITA. If you find that yours is "notchier" than others you might be able to test drive, get your dealer to check out if there is undue friction in the shift mechanism at the shift lever end.

This is not a big job. The fix might be as simple as slackening off shift cables and retightening them after ensuring that the cable runs are straight. I believe the dealers use a simple alignment jig to check this.

I put up with a PITA (notchy, imprecise) sport shifter in my 996 until I changed the car, and did not order it on my current 997 as a result. Now I am also regretting that, because the 997 transmission's shift is a lot "lighter" than that of the 996 was, so should be more suited to the SS.

If you find that other 997s with sport shifters you might be able to try are also not to your personal taste, you should try to do a deal with your dealer for a "goodwill" cut-price installation of the standard shifter, or maybe even do a straight swap with another "masochistic" 997 owner who might really want a "PITA" sport shifter. Installation only involves about 1 hour labor, at a guess.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

congrats.. i have a sports shifter on my few miles 997tt. it shifts like a rifle bolt, which is good.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

Thanks for the comments and welcome guys. For the moment I'm going to see how I get on with the sports shifter as it is. Its not refusing to go into gear bad, its just I get more jerky gearchanges than I would like bad.

I've finally got round to taking some pics - hopefully they will show up OK.

    Re: Newbie intro and question

    Update:

After a few weeks I am getting more used to the shifter - its only notchy when cold now which is what I initally expected.

I'm also thinking about the X51 powerkit - anyone had this done in the UK?

    Re: Newbie intro and question

You have a beautiful Porsche!!!!! Enjoy it

My opinion is, if its not perfect, call your salesperson and make the dealer fix it. They are there to make you happy! Period. Especially since they know they might be selling us new porsches every few years for the rest of our lives.

The shifter is one of the best ( if not "the" best )available and should be smooth as silk.
If not, tell the dealer to adjust the cables.

Naturally if the transmission oil is frozen solid in winter( Lol ) it will be a little difficult until it warms up. But that is not "notchy"
