    Re: C2S or M3?

I also need more power. however I also think that x-51 (specially retrofitting) is money thrown away. I am planning upgrade the same route with 3rd party pieces. After my warranty is out in 1.5 years, I will think of something major.

I am also coming from M3 and roads I believe are equally bad here. thats almost the reason I shyed away from S for a 4S.

regarding the topic. I am a car enthusiast and I apreciate what BMW does. The styliğng I am not used to but if it will have a lighter engine with 420hp+, my hats are off. M3s are very well respected in my book.

    Re: C2S or M3?

That M3 is looking good. I hope BMW deliver. I am a previous BMW owner, and a huge fan (childhood BMW Brabhams fan, especially Nelson Piquet). Have to admit I can't wait for Bangle to leave.

I too hope they don't just concentrate on HP and put a top class braking system on that thing.

C2S is currently a better sports car than the M5 and M6 so I'd doubt the M3 would come in on top.

I'd have to go with the C2S.

    Re: C2S or M3?

Here in London, the M3 has a rotten image. It's the car of choice for a whole range of wide boys and hooligans. Do I care about the bhp figure and 0-62 mph times? Are they even remotely relevant if I will be perceived to be like them if I drive an M3? Enough said.

BTW, the 997S (with -20mm sports suspension and PCCB) was 6 seconds faster over a roughly 1.5 minute timed comparison done by Top Gear against the AMV8 and the M6 on very wet roads on the Isle of Man. It is not about horsepower. It is all about how the car uses it.

    Re: C2S or M3?

No one is gonna dismiss a 425 hp M3. In fact, my first car was a M3 and I loved it. I own a 987s and just put my deposit down for the 335 i twin turbo. However, if it's trading one in for the other, I stay loyal to Porsche. I suspect (my 2 cents no way representative of all) that budget aside, or for 99% of guys, the 997s is always gonna be taken over the new M3. I could be wrong. It's not all about horsepower as a car purchase decision is a function of many factors "horsepower, brand, looks, reliability..." different strokes different folks. I guess it would not be absurd to say that Porsche is much more lusted after than a BMW (without considering specs and just going by) in many circumstances. Just qualitatively, I have a feeling that if you were to ask a 2 year old kid, he would pick the PORSCHE. Then this is all personal. BTW, most foreigners (if you go by Fast and The Furious series and the latest Tokyo drift) have this stigma far east side wise as driving modded hot rods... namely Honda S2000 (Jeremy Clarkson's favourite), the old Mitsubishi Eclipse, the old Mitsubishi 3000 GT, Lancer Evolution, Subaru WRX, Sti, Mazda RX 7... if you want horsepower, most of these cars can give even a 996 (and I am sure 997 turbo) turbo a big run for its money. If it's about hp, mod up a Lancer Evo and shout at the M5 next to you "bussshit man, [censored] you, me faster than u..."

    Re: C2S or M3?

my .02 cents, if I bought the M3 i would probably always have sleepless nighs dreaming about should I have bought the C2S, If I bought the C2S, I would be dreaming about getting up in the morning and driving my C2S, and get up very rested. Guess the M3 would never cross my mind. Oh well , what do I know.

    Re: C2S or M3?

I initially traded my slightly modified E46 M3 for my C2S and never regretted it. I have to admit though, as time went on I longed for a little more HP! I considered a new C2S X51, but for me the power gain is not cost effective; and I believe the resale would be terrible.
I strongly considered the new M3, mostly because it will do some serious damage to a C2S and most likely an X51 equipped one, for a lot less money. But, I do agree that there is an intangible element with Porsche that makes every day a dream drive.
In the end I decided that I needed the power and wanted to drive a car that was a sports car first rather than a compromise, so I bought the 997 turbo. So much for the new M3 keeping up.
If more power is what you want, go for it. If you want to come back, your resale will be terrific. Both are great cars, but P gets my vote.

    Re: C2S or M3?

I currently have a deposit in for the new M3 and plan to swap my 987s in for it when the BMW arrives... However this will depend on many things, firstly I need to see the bloody thing and secondly I have to drive it! Until those happen cant really comment... however around the time I chop in the Box I will be taking a spin an a used 997s!

Asked the GF which one she prefered the 997s every time... She however is thinking of the label, I on the other hand, am thinking of 420hp in the front of a lighter car than the current M3!!!! !Thats got to be a whole load of fun.

    I think that's a valid concern for the USA-assembled Bimmers (x5,X3,z cars).

The M3 will be made in Germany so it'll be better.

FYI MMD -- X3's are built in Austria

Here in the US - or at least in my area (NYC Metro) - the image you have there of M3 drivers is similar here. Here, M3's are usually associated with rich-kids from upscale suburban neighborhoods. It's very rare to find an M3 driving around with anyone in their middle ages, and nine times out of ten, you'll see an M3 with dark tinted windows, light kits, super loud and cheap exhausts It's the car of choice for glorified ricers that have more money than their Acura and Honda counterparts.

Having said that, the M3 is an excellent car and it doesn't deserve that kind of image. Based on the the M3 meets I have attended in my area - M3 drivers usually fall into one of two categories: 1) the rice bag group mentioned above or 2) people that appreciate their M3 and if pushed to mod, will do so correctly (Dinan, etc.)

As for the 911 (and for most Porsche cars) - I am going to quote a Beatles song here:

Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she woos me

You're asking me will my love grow
    I don't know, I don't know
You stick around now it may show
    I don't know, I don't know

Somewhere in her smile she knows
That I don't need no other lover
Something in her style that shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

    Re: C2S or M3?

There is no substitute for porsche!!!!!!!!!!!

If had to decide between the both I'm chosing porsche heads down, even if there is 100HP of difference.
I might had it to my garage as a second car, but that is it!

    LOL! Good one!

    Re: C2S or M3?

Putting image, prestige, marques all aside for a moment:

I'm a bmw guy, driven to Porsche after being left cold with Bangle's abominations. The E46 M3 was a pig, heavier than its non-M counterpart.

The E90 has gotten even heavier, and the E90 M3 will be heavier still. Soon, these cars will approach Audi-weights.

Look, a 3600lb sedan is not and cannot be considered a sports car. The C2S even needs a diet, but at least it's a ground up sports car design (track, layout, chassis, center of mass, etc.).

The new M3 will post numbers that belie its weight, but it will not challenge the Porsche in driving dynamics. As stated above, chasing hp is for dummies. You can only use so much power on the street, while a compelling chassis NEVER gets boring.

Bravo, Frayed! You've hit the proverbial nail on the head... or should I say "...you've nailed the proverbial apex..."?

And I can't think of a more compelling chassis setup than the one under the new 997.

    Just MHO,
