    Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

    Hello All:
Just joined and first post. I am finalizing my order for 6-speed 997TT (Oct production, delivery ETA Dec) and my only remaining question is regarding the "Axle-Differential Lock Rear"option. I have asked two different guys at dealer and gotten two somewhat different answers (neither of which gave me great comfort). What is your take on precisely what this option provides for? To the extent you believe "important" (as one of the Porsche sales guys indicated), I find it interesting that Porsche would not provide this feature by default, let alone charge nearly a grand for it. Then again, they seem to be able to get away with charging $765 for a 'sport shifter' in a 500hp sports car that has a base sticker of nearly $130M [with taxes] (setting aside the apparent inconsistency that I feel a $9M brake upgrade option is reasonable ). Your insights would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tim

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

go for it. the short shifter action is identical to that of a top notch rifle bolt. your not gonna be disappointed when your "holiday" gift arrives.

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

Axle-Differential Lock Rear is a limited slip differential for the rear axle. It is useful when driving agressively on poor road surfaces that may cause one of your rear wheels to slip. It was discussed extensively on this board so if you do a search you will find out more than you ever wanted to know. Personally I would recommend it because it is relatively inexpensive and it could make it easier to sell your car down the road because some people will only buy a high performance sports car with it. Hope this helps.

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

Thanks for the info. BTW, before posting I did do a search for "differential" in the 997TT section and got no hits, but maybe I need to widen the search to include all 997 forums. Regardless, thanks again.

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

    I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

Look up limited slip differential in this forum or the internet in general. LSD allows the rear wheels to spin at different speeds independe of one another. The biggest benefits are increased traction in slippery conditions, as well as increased traction and grip under breaking, acceleration, and especially exiting tight turns.

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

If you like the best driving dynamics, handling, technology, control, etc...When driving spiritually on tracks or small back roads, then, you must get it. It a cheap upgrade, I would definitely get without a doubt. However, if you will only using it in cities, then, there is no need for it.

    Except to help resale value.

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

go for it , really important option along with the sport chrono turbo

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

Thanks for all the feedback. Those threads really helped clear up my remaining questions. I am definitely going to get the LSD option (might as well, I have already completely blown my original budget for this car anyway ).

Great forum and really helpful members. I will post some pics when I get car (after months of thinking I was going to order with a custom paint-to-sample color, I just saw a clean Atlas Grey 997 outside in sun and wow - I was sold, Atlas Grey it will be for me).

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

Determine first the way you will be driving the car.

If you will be driving only on normal roads and you are not into aggressive driving, it is not essential.

However, as it has been said, if you are looking to get the best grip and traction when driving at the limits, it is a must have.

Re: Axle-Differential Lock Rear on 997TT?

Make sure you get sport chrono turbo, amongst the other items you discussed.
